Los Angeles , CA – USC fell victim to a crowd disappointing loss against Utah at The Galen Center, with a final score USC 69 Utah 80.

This was Utah’s game from the gate! They played a inside outside game with their main objective of running out the shot clock. And if they didn’t make the shot they know and was satisfied with the fact that they made USC guard them hard for the complete 30 seconds.  A clever tactic used to kill any USC momentum. It was diabolically effective. The sheer desperation to take control of this game in some way shape or form led USC into foul trouble early in the first half. Utah was also wise enough to play a nice clean game keeping the Trojans off the line. Because that is a prime location USC uses to make their comebacks. Just in case I didn’t paint a vivid enough picture of how much trouble the Trojans were in the only lead they had in the entire game was by 3 points. They only held that lead for 53 seconds in the first half.

USC could do nothing with Utah’s Kyle Poeltl! He had 13 rebounds , hit 11 of 13 from the floor and was 7 of 8 from the line giving him a final game point total of 29 points.

USC had three players in double digits Bennie Boatwright, Jordan McLaughlin and Julian Jacobs. Other then that all their other stats were below average. USC wins when they are rebound aggressive, move the ball, blocking bullies and orchestrate smooth steels. All those elements were missing from tonight’s game.

USC will be embarking on a two game road trip in the bay Stanford on February 25 and Cal on February 28. The Trojan fans are hoping the three day break will be enough time for their team to regroup and get back to playing USC basketball.

Los Angeles, CA – After the greens had dried out from the Wednesday night rains Bubba Watson is now 2016 Northern Trust Open Champion. Playing in the last group allow for Watson to see folks moving up and down the leaderboard. The top five were only 3 shots away to finish the weekend and smell the big money.

At the start of the day this was a wide open race with nine golfers with 2 shots of each other. Watson held a one stroke lead coming out on first tee. While Adam Scott tied 2nd place (-14 under-par) gaining a stroke on the winner with Jason Kokrak (-14 under-par) shot same one round score of Watson (-3 under-par) for day. The best round of the day goes to Adam Hadwin (-5 under-par) which left him tied for 16th place with total (-7 under-par) for the tournament.

Watson was asked at what point did he think he won the golf tournament, “So I just held it together and I knew no. 10, is always going to play a big role. I made a 10-footer, 12–footer maybe for par on 10. So that got me going, that got me in a positive. It was like a birdie right.” If look at Watson game this week he had four round in the 60’s with some great birdies. He is the 2016 champion because of his consistent play by the lefty, just playing his game all week.

Scott was all smiles and came away with a birdie on 18th green on chip from the second cut after moving the fans to allow for him to chip in add little pressure on Watson. Scott said, “That was probably an unlikely 3.. You know, the chip was traveling a little quick but I picked a club that I knew would release to the pin because I had one thing I could do only to win and that was chip-in.”

So now Watson has is second victory on this old school tradition track of the Riviera Country Club. He likes the course and said, “It feels nice. Anytime you can win, being in that situation before here and pulling it out, it’s kind of the same shot that I had on 18. I hit wedge an 14 I hit 9-iron today, so it was the same kind of shot and it worked out.”

Los Angeles, CA – The leader board was moving all day even with a later final push by new leader Jason Kokrak (-10 under par). While big names Jordan Spieth, Fred Couples, Sergio Garcia and James Hahn 2015 Northern Trust Open Champion all missed the cut of even par. Kokrak had 5 birdies on the back nine to take the sole lead by 1 stroke.

The course is transforming right in front of the golfer’s eyes from day to day. The greens and fairways have started to firm up in some spots with the sun coming back to like. Dustin Johnson earlier looked like he could be in the clubhouse as your 36 hole leader birding holes 12, 15, 16, and 18.

Yeah, I got off to a great start, 3- wood, 7-iron. I actually flew it a little past the hole high, but hit a really good shot and kind of set the tone for the day. Hit a lot of good mid-iron shots but you know, made a couple putts.
February 19, 2016: Camilo Villegas in bunker on hole 2 during the second round action of PGA Golf during the Northern Trust Open at The Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, CA. (Photo by Jevone Moore/Full Image 360)

The Riviera Country Club jumped on day one leader Camilo Villegas at beginning of his round. Villegas found himself in ruff on left side on ruff by driving range on hole two for his second shot. The rough grab his club enough to only allow him to catch front greenside bunker dropping double bogey. Villegas finished the day with four bogeys on his card oppose to 9 Birdies the day before.

Jordan Spieth the World #1 rank golfers had a start he couldn’t recover from but always kept a smile. Spieth did manage 8 birdies on Friday but also had 5 Bogeys, to match his inconsistent play this week. As good as he is we will see him back on the top of a leader board in upcoming weeks on a different course.

First-Round Leaderboard
Jason Kokrak                      68-64—132 (-10)
Chez Reavie                        66-67—133 (-9)
Dustin Johnson                   68-66—134 (-8)
Troy Merritt                         68-66—134 (-8)
Bubba Watson                    66-68—134 (-8)
Marc Leishman                    68-67—135 (-7)
Kokrak gave an assessment of his day after a first hole birdie, “Yeah, I got off to a great start, 3- wood, 7-iron. I actually flew it a little past the hole high, but hit a really good shot and kind of set the tone for the day. Hit a lot of good mid-iron shots but you know, made a couple putts.”
The weekend will be sunny and the fans should be treated to some great golf. Spieth will be resting with few others, while this field will look to conquer the length and firming up of the greens.

Los Angeles, CA – After the morning rain moved east the wet golf course was no match for Camilo Villegas the day 1 leader (-8 under par). On the flip side fan favorite Jordan Spieth was on opposite side in the black number (8 over par) and in danger of not playing the weekend. There are three others lurk just three shots back at (-5 under par) being tied for second Chez Reavie, Bubba Watson, and Luke List.

Villegas had missed the cut in his last four starts, but Villegas got rolling on Thursday with an opening-round 63 to finish with few stroke lead. The four-time winner is looking for his first top-10 finish since his victory at the Wyndham Championship in 2014. Today’s 63 is Villegas’ lowest round on TOUR since a 63 to open the 2014 Sony Open in Hawaii. The score of 63 also matches the lowest opening round in tournament history.

Watson is playing in the Northern Trust Open for the 10th consecutive year. He was the 2014 champion recording his lowest first-round score ever at the tournament with an opening 5-under-par 66. Watson had only shot in the 60s (69) on one other occasion in the first round at Riviera Country Club in 2009. So if he can match his performance on Friday the weekend should set up well for his game.

After his round Villegas spoke at his day, “Yeah, obviously things were going good there. You don’t really shoot 8-under around this place not playing good. Obviously the rain yesterday made the golf course a lot more accessible.” One key was how he was able to flow with the change with the weather, ” Yeah, like I said, I was very surprised seeing 6-irons stopping where they were stopping. And from there on, I fly my third shot all the way to the hole on the 11th hole, and then the same thing with 12, I was aggressive, made a nice birdie there and you’ve just got to shut the mind and remember you’re playing a totally different golf course, which is what I did.”

Spieth was able to keep his sense of humor to the end of round even when his scores were not going the right way. Today was just a ruff day of golf for one of the top PGA golfers. Spieth said, ” So I tried to do better today, even when it wasn’t going my way to just be quiet, stay focused and try and make the next shot. None of them seemed to go in but at least that’s what I was doing.”

First-Round Leaderboard
Camilo Villegas                   63 (-8)
Chez Reavie                        66 (-5)
Bubba Watson                    66 (-5)
Luke List                             66 (-5)

Los Angeles, Ca – The USC Trojans returned home to host the Colorado Buffaloes at the Galen Center. Where they issued a rainy day upset to the Buffaloes with a final score Trojans 79 Buffaloes 72.

Colorado arrived in Los Angeles coming off a 81–80 win over Washington on February 13. The Trojans and Buffaloes last matchup was on January 29, 2015 that went into triple overtime and left Colorado walking away with the win. So the Trojans were fully aware that they were going to have to go hard if they didn’t want a repeat performance. In addition to the hard work they were holding their breath that Josh Scott,  Colorado’s leading scoring and rebounder wouldn’t be playing at full steam due to his injured ankle.

Colorado came out on ready. Controlling the temple with their infamous signature move of getting the ball from one end of the court to the other without the ball touching the floor even once. It was incredible to see, I call it “The turbo drive”.  For the first half of the game the Buffaloes were able to cripple the Trojans with their relentless rebounding, by the end of the first they already had 23. USC didn’t help their own cause with their lackluster defense.

It was looking fairly sad for the Trojans at the half because they were down by 8. But oh to have been a fly on the wall of their locker room during that halftime because whatever was discussed gave the Trojans some fire in the belly.  They came out of the locker room pressing Colorado into ridiculous turnovers. USC also went to that zone defense to fight back from a 15 point deficit. Colorado’s number one fatal error was sending USC to the line where they made 27 out of 35 free throws. Giving The Trojans a chance to “fight on”.

The Trojans lead scorers  were Jordan McLaughlin who had 25 points and Julian Jacobs with 17 points. The team itself had A combined total of 13 steels. Amazing!

The University of Colorado’s Josh Scott did come back from his injury as if it never happened with his contribution of 17 points. But I would have to say Colorado’s magic man was “King George” George King with 13 points and 9 rebounds. He was like American Express everywhere you wanted to be.

With this exciting nailbiting win the Trojans will be welcoming Utah to the Galen Center on February 21, 2016. The word on the streets is this should be a knockdown drag out fight … stay tuned.

The Inaugural Stephen Bishop Celebrity Golf Invitational Benefiting RAKE

Calabasas, Ca – Before some folks went to the Grammy’s there was some great celebrities finding a good place to donate their time while raising money for charity. This was the actor Stephen Bishop Inaugural Golf Tournament teamed with some great folks like comedian Ricky Smith and Smith Family Foundation. Today at the Calabasas Country Club there was plenty of fun and sun for all that came to make their presence felt by RAKE (Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere)

Host Stephen Bishop was all over the country club at the crack of dawn ensuring that everything was in place and top notch. When the golfers arrived they checked in and received a golf towel embroidered with there name that was listed by groups. A nice touch to have that first RAKE take place, who doesn’t like to see their name in lights. Smith made sure he held down the carpet bring his comedy to life their guest to ensure the fun and laughter continued. There was  a duet by Smith and Cedric the Entertainer singing a few oldies.

The golfers held a putting contest that came down to five finalist and eventually won by a golfer named Marcus Allen who beat out comedian Dannon Green. Soon after that they all took off for a shotgun start on the beautiful course. On a day like this everyone was a winner by doing their part to RAKE !!!

Calif. Approves Transfer Agreement with HBCUs

Washington, DC – The California Community Colleges Board of Governors and the leaders of nine historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are signing an agreement ensuring guaranteed transfer to graduates of any California community college who meet certain academic requirements.

California Community Colleges Chancellor Brice Harris, leaders of the participating HBCUs and George Cooper, executive director of the White House Initiative on HBCUs, are taking part in a signing ceremony in the chancellor’s office March 17.

“We applaud Chancellor Brice Harris and the California Community College System for working to ensure that all community college students have a guaranteed pathway toward their academic goals,” said Walter Bumphus, president of the American Association of Community Colleges. “Nationally, community colleges serve the majority of minority students, and this historic agreement with HBCUs will safeguard increased access toward the completion of a bachelor’s degree.”

No lost credits

The memorandums of understanding between the chancellor’s office and the individual HBCUs says students who have completed an associate degree for transfer or similar transfer-level associate degree and maintain a 2.5 grade point average will be admitted to the four-year institution as a junior with full acceptance of transferable units.

Students who haven’t earned a degree from a community college would be able to transfer 30 or more credits and would be guaranteed admission to an HBCU with advance standing.

The participating HBCUs are Bennett College (North Carolina); Dillard University (Louisiana); Fisk University (Tennessee); Lincoln University (Missouri); Philander Smith College (Arkansas); Wiley College (Texas); and three institutions in Alabama – Stillman College, Talladega College and Tuskegee University.

The goal of the HBCU Transfer Guarantee Project is to educate students about additional transfer opportunities at these institutions and develop pathways that will contribute to an increase in baccalaureate attainment.

More success

HBCUs have an excellent academic track record, the chancellor’s office noted. While only about 17 percent of black undergraduate students attend an HBCU, more than 28 percent of African-Americans who receive bachelor’s degrees obtain them from an HBCU.

These institutions are also leading institutions in awarding bachelor’s degrees to black students in the life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics and engineering. Some also award master’s and doctorate degrees.

There are 105 HBCUs in the United States, with most of them located in the South and on the East Coast.

Los Angeles, CA – A dominant second half from Portland University was the driving force in a 92-78 victory over the LMU Lions. Alec Wintering 29 points and D’Marques Tyson 23 combined for 52 points and Adom Jacko of the Lions scored 35 points to keep the game closer than it otherwise would have been.

The game was tied, after a well played first half as the LMU Lions hosted the University of Portland in a high paced shootout by college standards. Guard Alec Wintering for Portland had an exceptional game and pushed the tempo beautifully. He made all the correct decisions,  facilitating the offense and getting easy open shots for all his teammates. The main beneficiary of this tempo for Portland was D’Marques Tyson.

Both teams shot the ball well and it was an exciting first half to watch from a spectator’s point of view. Portland dominated the rebounds for most of the game and that  led to most of their success. As usual for LMU Adom Jacko could not be contained in the low post. He was the best source of quality offensive production for the Lions.

In the end, the ball movement and the shooting of Portland was too much for LMU to handle. They made 16 three pointers and kept the ball moving wonderfully. They are clearly not used to playing at this fast pace and in the second half and just could not keep up. They essentially were trading two point baskets for 3’s it seemed. Even though Jacko was dominant in the post he didn’t get enough touches because of the fast pace.  They were always playing uphill in the second half after being a tied game at the halftime. It was proven to be fool’s gold for the Lions in the end.  LMU’s coaching staff refused to make an adjustment to come out of the zone defense that was surrendering all the open shots from long distance.  Portland’s  backcourt and balance attack beat the one man show of the Lions.

Los Angeles, CA – The Gonzaga Bulldogs came into Gersten Pavilion Thursday night looking for their tenth conference victory as they took the court against Loyola Marymount University. The Bulldogs did just that with a 92-63 victory, thanks in large part to Kyle Wiltjer and Domantus Sabonis, son of NBA great Arvydas Sabonis.

The Lions came out with incredible energy, feeding off the frenzied fans and atmosphere created by the ESPN crew on hand. LMU ran out to a 6-2 lead led by Adom Jacko, who scored the team’s first 4 points including an athletic putback dunk. From that point on it was all downhill for the home team as Gonzaga started to find its offense. The Bulldogs out-rebounded LMU 21-9 in the first half including five offensive rebounds. The Zags dominance in the paint allowed them to shoot 63% in the half, most of the buckets coming on lay-ups and dunks. The first half scoring load was spread evenly for Gonzaga, Kyle Dranginis, Eric McClellan, and Kyle Wiltjer each scored nine apiece, and big man Domantus Sabonis led the way with 10. GU ended the half on a 20-4 run and went to the break with a commanding 47-26 lead.

The second half was more of the same as the Bulldogs were simply too big and too physical for the undersized Lions. Kyle Wiltjer led the Zags in scoring with 23 points, while Sabonis had 21 of his own to go with 11 rebounds. About the only bright spot for LMU was their star big man Adom Jacko, who brought effort and energy all night. It was clear Jacko wanted to show off his talents for the NBA scouts in attendance, along with the national audience tuned in on ESPN3. Jacko again led his team in points and rebounds as he recorded 23 and 7 against a NBA prospect laden front line of Gonzaga. The inability to rebound or play defense is what enabled GU to leave Los Angeles with such a dominant victory. The final rebounding differential was 40-25 in favor of the victors, the Zags also converted on 57% of their shots, not a good combo for the lions.

LMU will look to bounce back on Saturday when Portland comes to town. Gonzaga will look to bolster their already strong NCAA tournament resume when they visit Pepperdine Saturday afternoon.
