UCLA Bruins Women’s Basketball Heading to Sweet 16

Los Angeles, CA – UCLA holds on to beat South Florida 72-67 and advance to the Sweet 16. This will be the Lady Bruins first time back in the Sweet 16 since 1999. The first two games for the #3 seeded Bruins were played at home in Pauley Pavilion.

The Lady Bruins were led by Jordin Canada who scored 19 with 7 boards to led her team to victory. She had ice in her veins hitting six free throws in the last 25 seconds of the game.

This game was  a back in forth game of runs, that saw the Bruins up by as much 16 points. South Florida never gave up and found a run to make this a tight game in the fourth quarter.

South Florida’s Courtney Williams, the nation’s 10th-leading scorer, led the game with 29 points but was just not enough.

As the Bruins move on to Bridgeport, CT to face #2 seed Texas who defeated Missouri to advance. The PAC-12 has 4 teams advancing to the round of 16, Stanford, Oregon State, Washington and UCLA.

Dear UCLA Family, Friends, Alumni and Supporters,

Since leaving the locker room in Las Vegas, I’ve spent countless hours dissecting our program, evaluating our staff, meeting with our young men and breaking down game film to address our struggles and begin the process of improving as a team.

I know none of that makes the ending to our season any better or changes how we all feel about our year, but constant review and improvement is imperative in my job – a job that I take extremely seriously and one that’s an absolute privilege to hold.

The fact remains that no matter how much time passes, the way we finished this past season will eat at me for a long, long time. Our record speaks for itself and is simply unacceptable. There’s nothing that I can say or write that will change that fact. This happened under my watch, it begins and it ends with me. The buck stops here.

Because of this, I let Dan Guerrero know that I wanted to return the one-year contract extension I received after the 2013-14 season. This request has since been processed. At the end of the day, year three was clearly not up to UCLA standards. My coaching staff and I fell short not only of our own expectations, but the expectations of Dan, the Chancellor and you, our fans. As a coaching staff, we intend to earn that extension back.

This has been a difficult time, there’s no doubt about that. Difficult times, however, build resolve.

It’s easy to just say we’ll be better next year. We’re excited to prove it, and that begins now. Over the course of my career, teams that I’ve led have owned, on average, a defensive rank in the top 50. This year we ranked outside the top 100. This can never happen again. We must return to the basics and instill defensive fundamentals in our young men from day one of permissible workouts.

While our returning letter-winners are upset about this past year and can’t wait to work on their games with our coaches over the next few months, on June 20th, they will be pushed even harder with the arrival of our new class in Westwood. There will be fierce competition in both the backcourt and frontcourt this offseason, which not only accelerates growth, it builds character.

While I don’t expect this letter to change any opinions or take away the pain from this difficult season, I do hope it reflects my commitment to UCLA and shows that we will address areas in which we fell short.

At this point, it’s well documented that basketball is my life. I came to UCLA to experience the pinnacle of the sport. I wanted to bring my passion for this game to the place where the game itself was ultimately taken to unprecedented levels of grace, dignity and success. In the process, it’s become my home.

I hope you’ll continue to support our fine young men that will be working this offseason to get better as well as the new class of young men coming here this summer, eager to experience everything that is great about UCLA. I know our entire program is already looking forward to future successes.

Thank you, and Go Bruins!
Coach Alford

The guys were eager to strut their stuff for their possible employers, being that this is best opportunity to realize their dreams. The sun was out and you could ask for a more beautiful day on campus at IM field while Spaulding field is under renovation. Coach Mora had a great feeling about watching his guys perform, “It gives me goose bumps…”

Today’s Pro Day was a great opportunity for these student-athletes to show off to the more than 100 NFL personnel that attended. All 32 teams represented including General Managers, Head Coaches and only Commissioner Goodell was missing.

El Camino College Hires Head Coach Gifford Lindheim

Los Angeles, Ca – It’s a new day at El Camino College, the Warriors have announced their new Head Football Coach Gifford Lindheim. He was the former head coach at Santa Monica College, where he led his team to 5 consecutives American Pacific Conference Titles. Coach will take over helm for 2016-2017 season and break in the newly built 40 million day stadium under the lights.

Coach Lindheim let the masses know about his decision today on social media post:

“I have been offered and I have accepted the full time Head Football Coaching job at El Camino College. I am extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish at SMC. SMC averaged less than 2 wins per season in the 5 seasons before I arrived. In the past 5 seasons, the accomplishments have been unprecedented in school history. We have won 5 Conference Championships and 34 straight Conference games. We were the only undefeated Junior College team in the state last season and have been moved up into the elite conference of Southern California. In that span, hundreds of players have experienced what it feels like to be a Champion. As of now, 79 players have moved on to 4 year colleges to continue playing the game they love and continue their education. More importantly than even the wins, hopefully the program has impacted in a positive way each individual that has made their way through it. With that being said, it is an honor and privilege to lead the football program at El Camino, one of the most storied Junior College programs in all of California. They open a $40 million dollar stadium this year and are committed to putting the program back on top.”

Lindheim will be joining El Camino College who has a 60-plus years of athletic history, they are proud of their tradition of excellence both athletically and academically. Student-athletes are encouraged and guided by exceptional administrators, professors, coaches and support staff. The process of establishing and working toward lifetime goals is enhanced by the many opportunities available to all Warrior student-athletes.

This will be an exciting time in the Warrior History with a rebirth after a legend Coach Featherstone  retired last season. Coach is going down as the winningest head football coach at El Camino College for the past 22 years with 166-73-1 record (69.2 %).

So let’s watch Coach Lindheim go make history again! This time around he has the support of the school to bring a program back to the top. GO WARRIORS!

Las Vegas, NV – Live from the PAC-12 Tournament Finals in Las Vegas Nevada. Where we meet up with the fighting Ducks of Oregon proving they had more than enough fight left in them to send Utah back across the Nevada state line with a big fat “L”! The 2016 PAC-12 Champs is Oregon with a final score Oregon 88 Utah 57.

The PAC-12 Tournament is a test of mental and physical strength. The team that has the ability to press on when they know there’s nothing more to give will always be the victorious one. In this case it would be the Ducks.

Both teams looked to be touched with some battle fatigue. But Utah mentally was done, with the excessive turnovers and bad passes left nothing but opportunities for Oregon to take advantage of.

After victory Oregon coach Dana Altman was asked if tonight game was enough of a statement for #1 seed tomorrow?, “Oh, that’s for the committee to decide. We just want to play. Wherever they set us up, wherever they match us up, we’re just going to have to go play.”

Coming out of the half the Utes were in serious trouble because the Ducks had found their second wind in the locker room and proceeded to run away from the Runnin Utes as if they were mere speed bumps on the road to victory. Oregon was crushing it in all departments 36 rebounds, 13 steals and 16 assist.

In addition to the the Ducks victory Elgin Cook earned the honor of being named the PAC-12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player. He spoke on what it felt like, ” It’s amazing feeling, but at the same time this wouldn’t be possible without my teammates and without the coaching staff.” Chris Boucher, Dillon Brooks,Elgin Cook and Tyler Dorsey were named to the 2016 PAC-12 All Tournament Team.

Congratulations to the Oregon Ducks on a job well done!

The Utah Utes Win From Behind

Las Vegas, NV – The PAC-12 Tournament has proven to be the best show in Las Vegas tonight! The California Bears ( The last California hold out) against the Utah Utes. Where the game went to overtime with the Utes and had a final score of Utah 82 California 78.

This game was the surprise in the surprise delivering that surprise ending! California got on the roll early in the game. Nailing those easy layups, making opportunities for pretty jumpers and forcing those Utah turnovers. Utah came out of halftime on a full offense press realizing that the possibility of them going home just got real! With Lorenzo Bonam finding his mojo and Jakob Poeltl kicking into fifth gear.

Utah stepped it up so well they took the lead. But Cal was not going to make this win easy for them. Cal had just enough fuel left tie the game up taking it into overtime. But in the end the team that puts more balls in the hoop goes on to the next round.

After the game Utah head coach spoke on today’s victory, “What a day of basketball here at the MGM, really. First game overtime, our game overtime, all the top seeds winning games. It’s March Madness at it’s finest, and I’m just extremely proud of our guys for not giving in.”

When you look back at the stat sheet Utah’s 7’0 Freshman center jumps off the paper leading his team with 29 points, 11 Rebounds. Clearly the inside consistent play made this win possible.

Utah will have to fight it out with Oregon Saturday night for the right to be the king of the PAC-12. Will the almost home court feeling give them that comfort zone and confidence needed to take this all the way?

Oregon Survives Arizona’s Onslaught

Las Vegas, NV – Live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena at the PAC-12 tournament semifinals, where myself and almost 13,000 enthusiastic college basketball fans had the pleasure of seeing the #1 seed Oregon and the #4 seed Arizona shoot it out. Unfortunately Arizona was not quick enough on the draw. Oregon moves on to the next round with a final score Oregon 95 Arizona 89.

Las Vegas was a modern-day Wild Wild West. This matchup was extremely fast-paced and physical. Neither team was letting a shot go by uncontested. It was to be a fight to the finish. So much so that Oregon’s Jordan Bell received a technical foul Arizona’s Kadeem Allen was fouled out in OT.

Oregon had the lead for more or less the entire game so I’m sure no one was expecting the dramatic turn at events that took place in the last 6 minutes of regulation play. Arizona ate away at Oregon’s lead with a few well executed 3 point shots and free throws to tie up the game with only a minute remaining. Oregon did have one last opportunity to send Arizona home but couldn’t close the deal. Taking the game into overtime. Giving all the Arizona fans who filled up more than half the arena a glimpse of hope.

Going into overtime both teams felt the urgency to turn it up. Arizona just couldn’t get those critical shots in and Oregon’s Dwayne Benjamin kept putting his hands all over the Wildcats possessions like he was their six player. Arizona gave a admirable performance but the turnovers in the end crippled their efforts.

With Oregon’s win they move on to the finals Saturday night against Utah. Will the Ducks have enough steam to stay afloat?

Las Vegas, NV – Coming to you live from the Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena entering into day two of the PAC-12 Tournament. The Colorado Buffalos and the Arizona Wildcats playing to see who would be going on to the semifinal round on Friday. Both teams came out savagely fighting but there could only be one winner and in the end the Arizona Wildcats were just too hot for Colorado to contain. The final score was Arizona 82 points Colorado 78 points.

Colorado being the No 5 seed going into the arena with a Pac-12 regular season of 10 wins and 8 losses versus Arizona record of 12 wins and 6 loses already gave Arizona what one could call through to ducted reasoning a slight advantage. Couple that with the fact that Colorado played the previous night we were surprised to see Colorado put up such a strong fight.

Colorado made no excuses for their loss today. They had strong moments determination. Now it might have been hard to see while Arizona was putting on the extra strength defense and reading straight through there to have them play right into Wildcat traps. Colorado never gave up even when Arizona had a 22 point lead. Those Buffalo stampede it there way back into the game and within 4 points. Most of that deficit was demolished in the last five minutes of the second half. All the while Arizona knocking potential shot out of the air like Godzilla and giving them the Billie Holiday Blues from three-point land.

Colorado gave the fans a valiant effort with the notable hard work from Josh Scott with 16 points 13 rebounds and “King George” George King with a ever and always impressive 22 points 5 rebounds all allow being 8 of 9 at the free-throw line.

Arizona presses forward to semi finals on Friday with major contributions from Ryan Anderson ,Gabe York, Kadeem Allen and Allonzo Trier. Will they have what it takes to be the last team standing?

The next game will see Arizona 4 vs Oregon 1 at 6pm back at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
