Las Vegas, NV – Coming to you live from the Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena entering into day two of the PAC-12 Tournament. The Colorado Buffalos and the Arizona Wildcats playing to see who would be going on to the semifinal round on Friday. Both teams came out savagely fighting but there could only be one winner and in the end the Arizona Wildcats were just too hot for Colorado to contain. The final score was Arizona 82 points Colorado 78 points.

Colorado being the No 5 seed going into the arena with a Pac-12 regular season of 10 wins and 8 losses versus Arizona record of 12 wins and 6 loses already gave Arizona what one could call through to ducted reasoning a slight advantage. Couple that with the fact that Colorado played the previous night we were surprised to see Colorado put up such a strong fight.

Colorado made no excuses for their loss today. They had strong moments determination. Now it might have been hard to see while Arizona was putting on the extra strength defense and reading straight through there to have them play right into Wildcat traps. Colorado never gave up even when Arizona had a 22 point lead. Those Buffalo stampede it there way back into the game and within 4 points. Most of that deficit was demolished in the last five minutes of the second half. All the while Arizona knocking potential shot out of the air like Godzilla and giving them the Billie Holiday Blues from three-point land.

Colorado gave the fans a valiant effort with the notable hard work from Josh Scott with 16 points 13 rebounds and “King George” George King with a ever and always impressive 22 points 5 rebounds all allow being 8 of 9 at the free-throw line.

Arizona presses forward to semi finals on Friday with major contributions from Ryan Anderson ,Gabe York, Kadeem Allen and Allonzo Trier. Will they have what it takes to be the last team standing?

The next game will see Arizona 4 vs Oregon 1 at 6pm back at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Las Vegas, NV – The basketball gods were at the USC vs Utah quarterfinals PAC-12 game taking place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Unfortunately for USC the Gods were Utah fans today, the final score was Utah 80 USC 72.

This game was a total 12 alarm fire. I couldn’t tell if the court was making the heat or the stands because the entire building was on maximum turn up. I mean the score was tied five times! The lead change not 7 or 10 times. It changed 14 Times! These two teams totally equally matched. Both teams put up 39 points in the second half.

The Trojans can chalk this loss up to a touch of the bad luck. Their three point shots are normally money in the bank bounced out like a brand-new Spalding ball. Utah did make some seriously adjustment like keeping USC off the free-throw line. They are known for picking up some quick points there. Other than Jordan McLaughlin and Julian Jacobs were look like their regular high energy selves with that dash of showmanship. Utah was really a living example of what a good team effort should look like. Jordan Loveridge, Kyle Kuzma, Jakob Poeltl and Lorenzo Bonam all were in double digits for points.

After this loss in the press conference USC head coach Andy Enfield spoke highly of his team and turn around from last season. This year they have 20 wins compared to 2015 campaign with 20 losses. They will be watching the TV screens on selection Sunday to see if get shipped out east for March Maddens.

With this sweat equity win Utah moves to semifinals on Friday to face 3 seed the Cal Bears at 8:30pm. They are living no delusion that the games are going to get tougher as the get higher up on the food chain. But they say, “We are taking it one game at a time, one win time.”

PAC-12 Basketball Tournament Ready For a Ride

Las Vegas, NV – The lights are bright and Vegas never sleeps but day 1 of the Pac-12 tournament has been put to bed. No surprise after one day of action on the hardwood, as top four seeds awaited their first opponents. Oregon #1 Seed will start the day off today hosting 8th seed Washington for a matinee game at noon. So as we get closer to Saturday night finally, who will punch an automatic ticket to March Madness?

Each of the games finished with dominate performances, USC somehow defeated UCLA 95-71 for a third time this season. They were led by freshman Bennie Boatwright who scored 19 points, 5 of  9 from 3 point range. This victory made it three straight wins in row for the first time since 1942. UCLA didn’t make it a game only shooting 38% from the field despite having four players in double figures. USC the 7th seed advances to play Utah 2 seed at 6pm Thursday night.

Washington defeated Stanford 9th seed 91-68 led by Dejounte Murray who exploded for 25 points. The Dawgs held Stanford scoreless from the field until 8:43 mark in first. They will need this same type of energy and shooting performance to have a chance to upset the #1 seed.

Colorado the 5 seed ran away from Washington State 12th seed 80-56. Ralphie would have been proud to see George King score 21 points for the team high. They will take on Arizona 4th seed today at 2:30pm for game 2.

The night cap for day one saw the closest game between Oregon State 75 Arizona State 65.  Stephen Thompson Jr. scored 13 points and Oregon State moved a step closer to its first NCAA Tournament berth in 26 years. This would be great for Corvallis after women’s basketball team just one their PAC-12 championship in Seattle last week.

All PAC-12 tournament games will be played at MGM Grand Hotel this week. The PAC-12 had already announced early in the week that the games were sold out. March Madness is here for our entertainment……

Oregon State Women’s Dominate The PAC-12

Seattle, WA – Oregon State women’s basketball team made a bold statement in why they should be a #1 seed in the upcoming march madness. They dominated the PAC-12 Championship game over the UCLA Bruins with a 69-57. Oregon State Ruth Hamblin held the paint down on both side of court with 23 points, 20 rebounds & 5 blocks.

Who knows why UCLA was so off their mark when the lights were bright. They shot only 24%  from the field 17 points in first half way. For the PAC-12 leading scoring team that averages 75 points a game was really out of sink.

The most dominate player on the court was Hamblin with or without the ball. UCLA help defensive in the paint was so slow due to not wanting to come off Hamblin. So no help lead to easy points and when they did come to double Hamblin made them pay. Teammate Sydney Wiese also played a great game scoring 21 points with 5 coming from three’s. Wiese in on fire in first half scoring 16 points as Oregon State held 27 point lead at half.

The Bruins had one last 16-2 run late in the game fueled by Jordin Canada who was their top scorer with 17 points. The lead was down to 9 after Canada stole an inbounds and scored. Then a 5 point play came after a foul and two shot technical foul on Oregon State 63-54 2:11 on clock. But that was as close as UCLA would come before finally losing the PAC-12 Championship.

Now its time for the big dance for the PAC-12 women’s team who should host four home games for the first round. The conference has highest RPI in the land. So Oregon State, UCLA, Stanford, Arizona State and Washington will be at their home building to start.

Carson, CA – The Los Angeles City Section knows how to put on a showcase of their talent. The packed gymnasium saw 2016 Kings of the court the Westchester Comets defeat the Narbonne Gauchos 51-42 in the Open Division. While the Queens of the court the Palisades Dolphins defeated the El Camino Real Conquistadors 65-44 to win Back-2-Back Open division champions.

The current active winningest coach in the city Ed Azzam had Westchester ready with a great game plan. Be consistent, play hard, play a full game hard.

The Kings of court have had this game plan, it works more often than not being #10 ranked team in California coming into this game. Keith Fisher (#12) scored 14 points for the Comets holding down middle. Narbonne crashed down hard on Fisher most of the game making it frustrating at times. Evan Council (#0) 9 points made his presence felt.

Narbonne not normally a basketball powerhouse has been on the rise the last few years. They were able to knock off Fairfax the week before setting up the opportunity to a championship. Without a true starting center they played four guard set most off the game to utilize their athleticism. The two senior guards led the team in scoring Jamal Hicks (#1) 12 points, and D’mauria Jones (#0) 11 points.

The Queens of the court Palisades put so much pressure on El Camino Real midway through the first period after little slow start. They trailed ECR 12-7 before applying the full court press. The press was just too much to handle, Palisades when on a 25 – 0 run and the 32-12 lead at the half.

The slow start didn’t shake the defending champions confidence. They played true team ball making sure the ball went all over the court. Guard Chelsey Gipson made some great choices with her ball movement while still dropping 15 points for the game, 9 points in the first half. Fellow guard Kayla Merrill-Gillett matching her jersey number 23 in points. The second half she found her rhythm from behind the arc and wherever she wanted to drop a shot.

This game followed the old saying defense wins championships! Dolphins head coach Torino Johnson lead his team to 12 -0 league record this season and will be primed to go deep in the State playoffs next week after winning the city.

Both the Kings and Queens of the court will have a great seeding for their own quest to win a state championship.

Oregon Too Much For USC

Los Angeles, CA – The USC Trojans hosted the Oregon Ducks today at the Galen Center. Where the Trojans closed out their impressive season with a disappointing loss to the Ducks 66 – 76.

Today the Trojans received only their second home lost of the season from Oregon. To add further insult to injury this was also the second loss this season to the Ducks and their final regular-season game. The lights going out at the Galen Center during the first half should’ve been taken as an omen (if one was the superstitious type).

The score alone is not an accurate reflection of how good the competition was at this game. The Ducks came out in the first half hot in the paint and the Trojans were smoking from three-point land. Both teams showing no mercy at the free-throw line. The Ducks were able to force the Trojans into a couple of turnovers, but the Trojans defense was so fierce that the Ducks had more than their share of shot clock violation. Even with Oregon starting the second half in the lead the Trojans came out eradicating the deficit. The game was tied on four different occasions and the lead flipped five times. It was like watching a roulette wheel. The Trojans just ran into some offensive bad luck towards the end. They couldn’t get enough shots to go in and stay or find a way to keep Elgin Cook from being everywhere at once. After watching this game one can completely understand why USC took their preparation for Oregon so seriously.

Well as a tradition with the regular season closers the Trojans upheld the Start The Seniors as part of their farewell and appreciation. This year’s departing senior is Strahinj Gavrilovic, someone Nikola Jovanovic credits greatly for helping him get acclimated to his new home country.

The Trojans now get to focus on a Wednesday’s game at the PAC 12 Tournament (opponent to be named). When asked did it matter who they played against in the first round the response was “It doesn’t matter who’s our opponent we just need to play our best!”. We look forward to seeing if the Trojans will have what it takes to fight on in Las Vegas.

Seattle, Washington – USC’s Courtney Jaco scored 19 points and Temi Fagbenie added 18 as the eighth-seeded USC Trojans rallied through a tense finish to defeat No. 9 Washington State 77-73 in the first round of the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament at Key Arena.

Having split the season, each team came into tonight’s matchup looking for an edge. The winner continues on, the loser ends their season on the worst note possible.
The opening tip-off went the way of the Trojans, but very little else did in the first half. A defensive struggle between the two teams trying to peak at the right time led to a see-saw half, with sloppy play on both sides.

The Cougars settled into an up-tempo pace that found USC flat-footed more than once. USC #41 Temi Fagbenle lead the Trojans in the first half with nine points. The team shot a dismal 36.4%, compared to the Cougars 44.8%,

WSU Taylor Edmondson #12,  gave the Cougars momentum heading into the half nailing a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give them a 34-31 halftime lead.
The second half  was more of the same as the teams battled back and forth with sloppy play leading to turnovers on both sides, and yet they remained tied going into the fourth quarter.
With no one truly able to pull away, overtime was looking like a real possibility.

With two minutes left, the game was still tied. With a chance to win in the final minute, WSU missed 3 of 4 foul shots. However Freshman Borislava Hristova made one to come as close as 72-71, but Nike McClure, after swiping the ball from Simon and getting fouled, missed both.

The Women of Troy will move on to play Pac-12 #1 seed Oregon State Friday March 4th at 6pm. The Beavers swept the Trojans during the regular season.

LMU Survives Double OT Thriller

Los Angeles, CA – On paper, this was supposed to be a total mismatch but you know the old saying: that’s why they play the games. On the final day of the regular season the Pepperdine Waves (17-11) visited the LMU Lions (11-16) and a great basketball game followed. LMU took a 90-83 victory in double overtime to pull off the upset win.

The first half was a major defensive struggle which was suitable for the Lions because they were without their best player Adom Jacko their most reliable offensive weapon. Brandon Brown, their starting point guard definitely picked up the slack, as he was in complete control the whole night. Brown did a great job facilitating the offense and getting good shots for his teammates. For Pepperdine in the first half their leading scorer was Lamond Murray Jr. who took a lot of shots and was very effective from midrange.

The game got much more pleasing to the eyes in the second half. The pace picked up and more shots began to fall. Possibly overlooking a lower level opponent in the 1st half, the Waves picked up their intensity in the second half but by then LMU had already gained enough confidence. LMU knew that they could win this game and they continued to play like it.

In a back and forth second half that came down to the wire, LMU pulled it off and got the win.  They made two big time shots at the end of regulation and in the first overtime. The first by Marin Mornar from the corner when they were down 3 to force overtime. Then Munis Tutu tied the game at 78 at the end of the first overtime with a clutch 3 of his own. Dominating the 2nd overtime 12-5, LMU finished off the victory 90-83 on their senior night. Pepperdine played with fire with a lesser foe and got burned.

Los Angeles , CA – USC fell victim to a crowd disappointing loss against Utah at The Galen Center, with a final score USC 69 Utah 80.

This was Utah’s game from the gate! They played a inside outside game with their main objective of running out the shot clock. And if they didn’t make the shot they know and was satisfied with the fact that they made USC guard them hard for the complete 30 seconds.  A clever tactic used to kill any USC momentum. It was diabolically effective. The sheer desperation to take control of this game in some way shape or form led USC into foul trouble early in the first half. Utah was also wise enough to play a nice clean game keeping the Trojans off the line. Because that is a prime location USC uses to make their comebacks. Just in case I didn’t paint a vivid enough picture of how much trouble the Trojans were in the only lead they had in the entire game was by 3 points. They only held that lead for 53 seconds in the first half.

USC could do nothing with Utah’s Kyle Poeltl! He had 13 rebounds , hit 11 of 13 from the floor and was 7 of 8 from the line giving him a final game point total of 29 points.

USC had three players in double digits Bennie Boatwright, Jordan McLaughlin and Julian Jacobs. Other then that all their other stats were below average. USC wins when they are rebound aggressive, move the ball, blocking bullies and orchestrate smooth steels. All those elements were missing from tonight’s game.

USC will be embarking on a two game road trip in the bay Stanford on February 25 and Cal on February 28. The Trojan fans are hoping the three day break will be enough time for their team to regroup and get back to playing USC basketball.
