San Diego, Ca – The stage was set for an emotional victory by the Chargers have little extra spirit on a special day. Ownership choose this Sunday to recognize one of their recent greats LaDainian Tomlinson aka “L.T.” with his jersey being retired and being place in Ring of Honor. All the extra energy did nothing for Chargers who were defeated by The Kansas City 33-3.

The visiting Chiefs had a game plan of their own which amassed 385 yards total offense. Alex Smith had his offense going on the ground and  through the air the injury depleted Chargers just couldn’t answer back. One of biggest Running Backs #92 Dontari Poe went over the top of pile for 1 yard Touchdown leap for game 1st score. That was story of the day, if Defensive Tackle score you better look out. The Chargers never led in the game managing only a field goal before the half.

This was a Family affair for the Tomlinson’s, with L.T. wife LaTorsha Tomlinson singing the National Anthem like a platinum recording artist. The halftime presentation was all L.T. with an emotional ceremony first having his name shown in Chargers Ring of Honor. He was overtaken with joy and even shed a few tears behind his sunglasses. He thanked God, Wife, Mom, teammates….fans and ownership, that is when fans booed. The San Diego fans let everyone know that they don’t want their team to move to Los Angeles and they are not happy with management right now. But after the boos the cheers came roaring back when the unveiled L.T. famous #21 next too other greats #55 Seau, #14 Fouts.

The current Chargers running back 1st rounded Melvin Gordon just could get things go today rushing for only 37 yards on 15 touches. The musical chairs offensive line could open up running lanes on Chiefs front seven.  It wasn’t too much better with Phillip Rivers being sacked 3 times and dropped balls all over the field. The drops were happening with all the receivers having their fair share of mental errors. The crowd even saw the 2-8 team start pointing fingers on the sideline. Rivers spoke on the exchange, “Brothers argue that what brothers due..”

Now the Chiefs are back to five hundred ball and trail the first place AFC West Denver Broncos by 3 games. The Chiefs will use today game as momentum to chase a wildcard spot if they can rack up some wins. This Chargers team will be in line for a great draft pick going into next year with the playoffs mathematical out of question. It will be up to Chargers coach Mike McCoy to keep this locker room together at seams so that things don’t get toxic. Next week the Chargers will travel east to face Jacksonville and look to get back in win column.

USC Jumps On New Mexico

Los Angeles, CA – The USC Trojans men’s basketball team hosted the New Mexico Lobos at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California.

The Trojans got their 3rd win in a row at the Lobos expense, USC 90 New Mexico 82. The Trojans issuing the Lobos their first lost of the regular season. Trojan fans are hoping this winning spirit is enough to get their team through this grueling schedule the team is about to embark on.

Now I need to go on recorded and say the final score is no reflection of how down right entertaining this game was. I mean this was good!  The Trojans played a team that I felt was there mirror image. Had the Lobos not been running  cold at the rim in the 1st half, I know the final outcome would have been skin tight close. The game was extremely physical but not in a bad sportsmanship kind of way. Both teams came out exploding with energy, making fast plays and stayed looking for wholes in each others armor.

USC had 4 players in double digits (Jordan McLaughlin 19, Elijah Stewart 18, Bennie Boatwright 15, Julian Jacobs 14), which is why they were hitting a solid 56.3% field goals in the 1st half compared to New Mexico’s 38.2%. USC’s largest lead of the game was 21 points in the 2nd half which would have discouraged your average opponents but the Lobos are no parts of average. Bennie had the 3’s raining down so hard he could have been given the nick name of Mr. Tri tonight.

Elijah Brown named the first Mountain West Conference Player of the week of the 2015-16 season, so when he sunk three 3 point shots in three minutes everyone totally got a glimpse of how he earned that honor.  Tim Williams served up a respectable 25 points, and when USC’s lead looked like it was about to get ridiculous Tim and the rest of the Lobos turned it up!!! They went from 19 rebounds in the 1st half to 28 in the 2nd (USC 19 rebounds in the 1st and 20 in the 2nd), and in the last seven minutes of the game Tim Jacobs, Cullen Neil, Elijah Brown and Anthony Mathis made enough 3 point shots to get them with 5 points of the Trojans.

It’s fair to say that New Mexico made USC come and work for this win … and work the did. In the infamous words of Jay Z … “on to the next one”.

South Bay, CA – The playoffs are here for high school football, it the time of year that Champions are Made. The Lawndale Cardinals took a loss to #1 Seed Calabasas Coyotes 33-7 in a tough battle. This would have been a later round match-up but due to a few CIFSS infractions this Quarterfinals game was a sight to see now. They players on both teams got to chance to impress Nebraska Defensive Coordinator Mark Banker look for talent.

The Coyotes started slow with little success in first quarter of play, it wasn’t till 2nd quarter that first touched scoreboard. They took lead for short second after missing the extra point and excite the visiting crowd.  Lawndale responded behind QB Chris Murray drove team down field and capped it off with QB keeper for 7-6 lead. This was the only time the Cardinals held the lead during the game.

This Calabasas team had too many weapons for the short handed Cardinals who lost running back Zach Cooper in first half. So Murray had more weight to carry on already unstable legs from few hits slowing him down but still had enough to show he is the real deal. The trio of juniors had the field covered starting at QB Tristan Gebbia with targets of Darnay Holmes &  Keyshawn Johnson jr. on the outsides who both made a bunch big catches and racked up good chunks of yardages. The standout Senior Nebraska commit Marquel Dismuke returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, caught an 18-yard touchdown pass and reeled in a pair of interceptions to move Calabasas to its first semifinal in 17 years.

Down the bay in City Section the Narbonne Gauchos were marching on to their quest for Championship run of their own. The Gauchos handled marine league foe San Pedro 55-24 for second time this year. This team has the #1 seed and coach Manuel Douglas has them performing like such.

The officials even took two touchdowns away from Narbonne but they wasn’t enough to slow down running back Sean Riley. Reaching the end zone this season has been a place where Riley has visited a lot. Just last week on one of his touchdown celebrations mimic WWE drop off the ropes when viral after uploading it to social media. He finished the game with 335 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns, including a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The team has been playing great football all season and if they don’t reach the division 1 championship game it will be a big disappointment.

The South Bay will be represented well next week in City Section with Narbonne hosting Dorsey, then in other side Crenshaw at Arleta. In the Southern Section Palos Verdes with host Mira Costa, Redondo Union will travel to Calabasas. Surprisingly the Serra Cavaliers will not be moving on after 1 point defeat to Mater Dei.

OKLAHOMA IS AUTONATION NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK

FWAA AutoNation Team of the week
FWAA AutoNation Team of the week

DALLAS (FWAA) – The Oklahoma Sooners changed the outlook of the Big 12 Conference and likely the national playoff race as well with a 44-34 win at Baylor to improve to 9-1. Oklahoma contained one of the nation’s top offenses and snapped Baylor’s 20-game home win streak to earn the AutoNation National Team of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Nov. 14.

The Sooners held Baylor under its season averages in total offense, limiting the Bears to 416 total yards (250 below its 665.6 average) and 257 yards passing (100 yards below its 356.8 average), while also limiting them to a season-low 34 points. Oklahoma forced five three-and-outs by a Baylor offense known for its quick-strike ability and handed the Bears their first loss at the two-year-old McLane Stadium.

“You go into the number six team’s backyard on a night like this and play this way, it just tells you that we’re one of those teams that has a chance at everything,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. “We’re just going to keep trying to improve and give yourself an opportunity next week to play just as well or better. Again, you come into an undefeated team ranked that high, waiting on you, and win by 10. It’s got to be a positive.”

Oklahoma surpassed the 500-total-yard mark (with 511) for a fifth consecutive game in part behind quarterback Baker Mayfield and receiver Sterling Shepard, who connected 14 times for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Mayfield tossed three touchdowns in all and added one on the ground. He finished 24-of-34 for 270 yards, recording his fifth game this season with at least three passing touchdowns and at least one rushing score. It was Mayfield’s seventh time to account for at least four touchdowns in a game, which leads the nation.

This is the fifth time for Oklahoma to win the National Team of the Week Award since its debut in 2002.

Other AutoNation National Team of the Week nominees for the weekend of Nov. 14 included:

• Arkansas (6-4): The Razorbacks won at No. 9 LSU, 31-14, in front of 101,399 fans, taking consecutive games from the Tigers for the first time since 2007-08. Arkansas rolled up 440 yards of total offense – 299 of it on the ground – while its defense limited LSU to 330 yards with five sacks and an interception.

• New Mexico (6-4): The upstart Lobos put themselves in position to win the Mountain West Conference’s Mountain Division for the first time with a 31-24 win at Boise State. It was UNM’s first win over the Broncos in the seven-game series, and came on the road where Boise State was 96-4 in its previous 100 home games. The Lobos are 6-5 in their last 11 conference games after going 5-41 in the previous 46.

Los Angeles, Ca – The USC basketball shows how much a difference a year makes grinding out 101-90 victory over the Monmouth Hawks. Head Coach Andy Enfield said, “Last year we would have lost a game like this.” So Trojans fans getting ready for a action packed season filled with potential victories.

In the battle of the early season unbeatens, Monmouth looked to steal another victory on their west coast road trip. The Hawks already upset the UCLA Bruins on Friday 13th and the Galen Center was in their sights. Head Coach King Rice of the Monmouth Hawks had his team ready to show the big boys they can play too.

The Trojans looked to have the Hawks number in the first ten minutes of the game, hold as much as 15 point lead. Then Coach Rice and his team made the right adjustments and  started to get hot. The biggest adjustment was typo and getting the ball down the court fast and really pushing the pace. The Hawks looked more comfortable with the up tempo play and their shots started to fall too. USC made few more runs, key three pointers to keep the lead going into the half. The damage was done by then the Hawks had caught up narrowing the lead to only 1 point 47-46 at the half.

In the second half it was a back and forth battle as the Hawks looked to close in and be one game closer to the programs 900th win in history currently at 898. But the Trojans were not going to let that happen on their watch. Trojan Elijah Stewart (20 points) hit a key three pointer 82-78 with 4:11 left in game, but Monmouth four guard set with one center still would go away.

Monmouth big men complimented their guards well but the points off turnover didn’t go in their favor as did against the Bruins. Justin Robinson was the  Hawks leading scorer with 28 points, followed by Deon Jones with 20 points. Jones played big during game as tall guard or as a physical big in the paint. Coach King will be please with the West Coast split before travel to Drexel in Philadelphia.

The final knock was started by game leader Jordan McLaughlin (22 points) who hit the first of back to back three pointers followed by Stewart and 90-82 lead with 2:27 left was just the break the Trojans needed to get little space and the victory. The Trojans will rest up and be ready to host New Mexico in five days back at the Galen Center.

SAN FRANCISCO – Quarterback Jared Goff of CALIFORNIA, linebacker Antonio Longino of ARIZONA STATE and place kicker Casey Skowron of ARIZONA have been named offensive, defensive and special teams Pac-12 Players of the Week in football.

Goff, a junior quarterback from Novato, Calif., threw for 453 yards, completing 26-of-37 passes in California’s 54-24 victory over Oregon State. Goff led Cal to bowl eligibility for the first time since 2011 by equaling his school-record six touchdown passes, which also ties for the most passes thrown by a quarterback in the nation this season. He became the second player in Pac-12 history to record over 3,000 passing yards in each of his first three seasons and the sixth player in Conference history to record three-3,000 yard campaigns.

Longino, a senior linebacker from Cleveland, Ohio., helped the Arizona State defense hold Washington scoreless in the second half and forced four turnovers as well as three turnovers on downs in ASU’s 27-17 win over Washington. His 9-yard sack on the Husky quarterback in the third quarter pushed Washington back, which resulted in a 45-yard missed field goal. Longino’s second sack of 8 yards midway through the fourth quarter halted the Washington momentum, resulting in an interception for the Sun Devils to kill the drive. Longino tallied a game-high four tackles-for-loss for a total of 20 yards, including two sacks for a loss of 17 yards and finished with seven solo tackles and one bass break-up.

Skowron, a senior placekicker from Phoenix, Ariz., totaled 13 points in his final home game, kicking a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals and 4-for-4 on PATs in the Wildcats’ 37-30 double-overtime victory against then-No. 10 Utah. He converted field goal tries of 47, 40 and 35 yards with his final attempt tying the game and forcing a second overtime. Skowron also booted five of his six kickoffs to the endzone for touchbacks and made one tackle on special teams. Pasadena, Ca –  The local player from Venice High now a Red shirt Junior Wide Receiver for the Washington State Cougars Gabe Marks scores the winning touchdown with .03 seconds on clock. Washington State came into Rose Bowl looking for a victory and came away gaining some respect with 31-27.

This game had a bunch of little story lines and post season bowl positions on the line for both teams. Cougars quarterback Luke Falk was the one of the team heroes coming into the game running coach Leach offense well. Falk was knocked out the game in the second quarter but went through the pre concussion protocol and cleared his head during halftime. This gutty performance passing 38/53 331 yards and 3 touchdowns, non bigger than 21 yarder to Marks for the win. No matter how much the Bruins front seven pressured him he just kept finding a way get first downs.

UCLA defense was able to stop the traditional running game hold the Cougars to 61 gross yards. The quick outs, and slants as new age running game ate the Bruins up.  The late interception in endzone by Jaleel Wadood  to stop Washington State from scoring late in 4th quarter setting up what Bruin hopefuls were wishing for a victory. The Bruins got the ball on 20 yard line with 3:13, 3 timeouts and 80 yards to a victory. Freshman Josh Rosen who had not thrown a touchdown all game need to find away to put this Bruin team on his back. 10 players later the Rose Bowl was all energized by uncharacteristic 37 yard run by Rosen who saw a big hole on the scramble. The magic was short lived because the Cougars had just enough time for the upset.

During the post game press conference Bruin Coach Jim Mora spoke about the offense sputtering in first half settling for two earlier field goals verses two touchdowns. Coach spoke on the end of the game but told his players, “We have to focus on plays during game that led up to last plays first.” So you can see the big picture of coach Mora knowing that his team has to play for the full 60 minutes to get results they need.

The Pac-12 south is still in sight and each of the top three teams control their own destiny with two games to play. So who ever can win out will get the nod for Pac-12 Championship game, so will be Utah, USC, or UCLA? We will be able to have clearer picture next Saturday when Bruins travel to Utah for another tough battle in Pac-12 conference.

Los Angeles, CA – The USC Trojans men’s basketball team hosted the San Diego Toreros at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California.

On paper these two teams gave the impression that they were equally matched. Both teams being very light on seniors in their lineup and having an ample amount of returning underclassmen, but that was truly an illusion. The Trojans sent the Toreros back to San Diego with a huge loss 83 – 45.

The Trojans came out of the tip off with all intentions maintaining their winning streak over the Toreros.  The Trojan’s field goal percentage was at all most 49% in the first half verses the Toreros mere 21%, which was a contributing factor to USC being up 23 points at the half. At no time was the Trojans lead ever in danger.

USC owned the floor with Jordan McLaughlin putting up 20 points and 3 others in double digits (Bennie Boatwright, Julian Jacobs and Elijah Stewart). In addition to out scoring the Toreros, the Trojans also issued out lessons in defensive rebounding. The Trojans pulled down 40 defensive rebounds giving infinite second chance opportunity. Now it should be noted that Chimezie Metu is in route to being a blocking machine he just needs to get a touch stronger in his ball handling skills then he will be utterly dangers.

San Diego clearly was still trying to adjust to their new coaching staff’s ( Head Coach Lamont Smith and Assistant Coaches Russell Springmann, Sam Scholl, Chris Gerlufson) way of playing ball. There were several times during the game when they lacked confident about where everyone was suppose to be on the play as if it were their first time playing together. USD did have a few rays of sunshine during the Trojan rainstorm with Hunter Summy’s beautiful 3 point shot with a assist from Tyler Williams and Duda Sanandze contribution of 12 points.

This was USC season opener and they did it in great Hollywood fashion. Hopefully this is a glimpse into their season’s future.
