LOUISVILLE IS FWAA NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK

louville-flightDALLAS (FWAA) – Quarterback Lamar Jackson put on another show last Saturday, accounting for 362 total yards and five touchdowns as the Louisville Cardinals rolled over Florida State, 63-20. By also holding one of the nation’s top offenses to 284 total yards, Louisville earned the Football Writers Association of America National Team of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Sept. 17.

The announcement was made on “Playbook,” hosted by Chris Carlin and Gino Torretta on SiriusXM Radio’s “College Sports Nation.” Each Monday during the season, the FWAA National Team of the Week will be unveiled during the program, which airs from 1-4 p.m. ET.

“We know all about them coming back and not just against us, but against other teams and what they were able to do,” Head Coach Bobby Petrino said. “We just talked about finishing, playing one play at a time, working on the process and letting the scoreboard take care of itself.”

Louisville is now 20-0 as a ranked team at home under Petrino, winning by an average of 52-18 in those games. It also set a school record by scoring at least 60 points in its first three games, while handing FSU its third-worst loss in school history.

This is the second time for Louisville to earn National Team of the Week honors. The other came in 2006.

Other National Team of the Week nominees for the weekend of Sept. 17 included:

• Nebraska (3-0): The Cornhuskers toppled No. 21 Oregon, rallying from a 13-point second-quarter deficit behind the ground-game tandem of quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr., and running back Devine Ozigbo, who each posted 95 yards and a touchdown. Armstrong also threw for 200 yards, breaking Taylor Martinez’s school record for career passing yards at 7,376.

• North Dakota State (3-0): The Bison stole a sixth straight victory over an FBS team when Cam Pedersen kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to give NDSU a 23-21 win over at Iowa. NDSU got a second chance at the win after failing on a two-point conversion trailing 21-20 with 3:41 left. The Bison outgained Iowa 363-231 and yielded only 59 total yards in the second half.

The Football Writers Association of America has named a national team of the week since the 2002 season. Members of the 12-person FWAA All-America Committee – plus one fan vote from Twitter – decide the weekly honor.

Founded in 1941, the Football Writers Association of America consists of 1,400 men and women who cover college football. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include game-day operations, major awards and its annual All-America team. Hawkins rallies to defeat Mater Dei

The game turned into a classic shootout with both teams trading touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Hawkins and Mater Dei Catholic were all tied, 42-42, with 11 seconds remaining in the game when Hawkins kicker Brandon Sanchez drilled a 34-yard field goal to give the Hawks the lead. On the final play of the game, Hawkins scooped up a fumble and returned for a touchdown, giving the Hawks a 51-24 win.

Despite the offensive output, the Hawks’ defense had their hands full with Oregon commit CJ Verdell, who rushed for 286 yards on 28 carries while adding five touchdowns and a touchdown as a kick returner.

“I feel we have the athletes and skill players to score on anyone,” Hawkins head coach Milvon James. “He (Verdell) made great plays. It was a great feeling for our team; to fight hard and come out with the win.”

Hawkins trailed 28-14 at halftime. Hawkins Athlete Greg Johnson took a 14-yard run to cut the lead, 28-21 in the third quarter. After a defensive stop, Hawkins quarterback Dylan Lemle scrambled right and found Eric Fuller Jr. in the end zone for 19-yard touchdown, tying the score, 28-28, in the fourth quarter.

“I knew this was going to be a tough game but I believed in my team,” Johnson said. “I was confident in our kicker. I’ve seen him hit 40 and 50 yarders in practice.”

After a Johnson interception, Lemle scored on a keeper from a yard out in the second quarter.

Verdell scored on runs of 26 and 50 for a 28-14 lead going into halftime. Johnson took the handoff and scored from 14 yards out, cutting the lead 28-21 in the third quarter.

Verdell answers with his fifth touchdown of the game, giving Mater Dei the 35-28 lead with 9:38 left in the game. The Hawks 7-play drive was capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by Johnson, tying the score, 35-35.

A 14-yard touchdown run by Verdell gave Mater Dei a 42-35 lead with 5:35 left in the game. Johnson added a 3-yard touchdown run to tie the score, 42-42.

“I believe in our kicker,” James said. “He’s made game winners before so that part was routine. He has ice in his veins.”

A 39-yard catch by Jalen Hall set up Sanchez’s 34-yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the game.

“I had my team’s support so I felt good,” Sanchez said. “I was confident and I knew I could make that kick.”

Gray Stands Up To The Hot Mercury

WNBA 2016: Phoenix Mercury vs Los Angeles Sparks game at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Ca on September 13, 2016. (Photo by Jevone Moore/Full Image 360)

Los Angeles, Ca – Los Angeles pulls off the win over Phoenix in a championship fashion Sparks 90 Mercury 85.

The Sparks had a rough ride these last three games. With two oh so close you couldn’t believe they lost games against Minnesota and Atlanta. Then insult to injury when they were washed out by Seattle. Having their lowest scoring game of all season. But it looked like the Sparks got over the shock of it all to turn the ship upright for a win tonight.

The first-quarter saw the Sparks doing their best to set the tone and pace of the game by taking the lead nice and early. They stirred the pot with a few three-point shots and some solid rebounding on both ends of the court, which was the foundation they needed to lay.

By the second quarter the Mercury started to heat up with DeWanna Bonner coming on the court looking uncontainable. Bonner was hitting at the line, sinking three-pointers and had some solid jump shots with which she was able to tie up the game in three short minutes. Talking about making the most out of the time you have. Her team feeling her drive picked, up their efforts giving the Mercury eight point lead going into the half.

Come the third quarter Nneka Ogwuike was able to break loose and get multiple drives through the lane, and Jentel Lavender was more than happy to layup anything Nneka wasn’t getting her hands on.

But the fourth quarter Superstar had to be Chelsea Gray scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter alone. She is really coming into her own this season looking like a well rounded player. Chelsea was 5-6 at the line, 2-3 in three point country and had five assist. She also had a career-high game tonight with a total of 23 points. You could see this really took the pressure off of some of her teammates, like Nneka Ogwuike with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Jantel Lavender with 17 points.

Alana Beard might not have been the highest scoring player tonight, but she will be making it to the instant replay reel on all your favorite sports channels with her ridiculous snatch and grab steals and the infamous “not in my house” blocks.

Unfortunately the Phoenix Mercury needed this win far more then the Los Angeles Sparks did for their playoff position. To Phoenix’s credit they looked much improved since their last meet up with the Sparks but the stars were not aligned in their favor. The Sparks have one more regular-season game against San Antonio on September 16. The Sparks already have three wins against San Antonio this season let’s see if they can make it a sweep.

UTAH’S TAUTEOLI IS NAGURSKI NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior linebacker makes three key plays in win over BYU

DALLAS (FWAA) – Utah linebacker Sunia Tauteoli has been named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Utes’ 20-19 victory over arch-rival BYU last Saturday.

Tauteoli, a 6-0, 226-pound junior from Salt Lake City, returned his first career interception 41 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage. He had a second interception in the third quarter.

But maybe his biggest defensive play was his assist on a tackle that prevented BYU’s two-point conversion attempt with 18 seconds remaining in the game. He had six tackles in the game, two unassisted.

Tauteoli will be added to the Bronko Nagurski Watch List for the annual award. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the 2016 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Thurs., Nov. 17. The winner will be chosen from those five finalists who are part of the 2016 FWAA All-America Team.

The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the association’s entire membership, selects a 26-man All-America Team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski Trophy finalists. The committee members then select the winner as the best defensive player in college football.

The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet, presented by ACN, will be held on Mon., Dec. 5, at the Charlotte Convention Center. In addition to the 2016 Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner’s announcement, the banquet will celebrate the recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Legends Award, sponsored by the CTC and Florida East Coast Railway. Navy’s Chet Moeller, a member of the FWAA’s 1975 All-America Team and a College Football Hall of Famer, will be honored. Duke head coach David Cutcliffe will be the keynote speaker at the banquet.

UCLA Runs Past The Rebels

UNLV Rebels vs UCLA Bruins at Rose Bowl on September 10, 2016. (Photo by Jevone Moore/Full Image 360)

Pasadena, Ca – Josh Rosen takes UCLA to the victory column with no interceptions in 42-21 win over the visiting UNLV Rebels at the Rose Bowl.

This UCLA football team will go as far Josh Rosen will take them, going 23/38 for 267 yards and no interceptions. Just think what the score and his yardage would have been if his deep balls were caught in this game. The offense as a whole protected better only allowing 1 sack of Rosen.

Establishing the running game was evident by new offensive coordinator Kennedy Polamalu who featured Soso Jamabo the starter again this week. Jamabo showed why last year he was such a top recruit scoring three touchdown and 90 yards on 11 carries. His speed was too much for the Rebels to handle when he hit the corner gliding past defenders. Bruins as a team had 233 yards rushing on 40 carries for 5 yard average.

At the half the score was only 28-14, but the Rebels lost the coin toss that the Bruins deferred to second half. This added more pressure to UNLV defense to step up and keep the game close in second half. They kept the Bruins out endzone in third quarter but gave up 14 points in the closing quarter.

This was a great confidence booster for the Bruins, head coach Jim Mora said, “it’s always great to get some guys in the game who worked so hard and deserve to play..”

One of those guys who’s been working hard to be a contributed was wide receiver Jordan Lasley who came up with three big catches for first downs, 61 yards to keep drives alive in the game. With Rosen hitting fourteen different receivers in the game it’s a little tough fitting for game reps not to mention passes thrown in your direction.

Number 42 is retired now at UCLA across all sports but players were allowed to finish out their careers with it. Linebacker Kenny Young is make the best of it having a solid game leading the team with five solo tackles, 2 assist, a tackle for a loss and a timely sack. The D was able to create two interceptions on Rebels quarterback Johnny Stanton.

Now the UCLA Bruins will look to get some guys back healthy and travel to face the BYU Cougars on September 17th, at 7:15pm.

USC Get’s Back On Track

Los Angeles, Ca – USC get back on track with a 45-7 confidence builder as the beat Utah St back home at the Coliseum after a slow start.

The final score may look like it was easy but they had to work for today’s victory. They were led by quarterback Max Brown who settled down this week and managed to go 23/30 for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

What a difference a week makes, even behind a conservative called game USC was able to finish with 422 yards of total offense against the Aggies. Utah St was able to move ball some on USC defense with 253 total yards offense.

Two main targets for Brown was Sr wide receiver Darreus Rogers who had seven catches for 82 yards and JuJu Smith-Schuster who also caught 7 pass with two touchdowns. The short pass and wide receiver screens were the main plays of choice.

I can understand USC thought process was to put their players in space and compete mono – mono.  So in the end the Aggies didn’t have enough top athletes to compete for the full game.

At the half the Trojans held a 21-0 lead, Clay Helton said, “Wanted to play ball control offense”

You can always count on Adoree’ Jackson to electrify the crowd somehow, that he did with 77 yard punt return for a touchdown.

Linebacker Cameron Smith on of two starters on the USC front seven led the defense with 13 tackles.

In the first half a the Trojans defense stopped the Aggies and then blocked punt by Michael Pittman Jr. and recovered by Quinton Powell (#6) and ball returned to 6 yard line for very short field. This punt block lead to first points of game with the Smith-Schuster 3 yard touchdown catch and 7-0 lead.

All in all USC will have to play a lot better when they travel up to the Farm to play Stanford and Christian McCaffrey on the September 17th.

Hawkins Making Noise in Carson

High School Football Hawkins High vs Carson Colts on September 9th, 2016. (Photo by Jevone Moore/Full Image 360)

Carson, Ca – Facing a traditional South Bay powerhouse, Hawkins High dominates both sides of the ball for a 53-7 victory over the Carson Colts.

Hawkins was first to put point on the board behind the strong arm of their quarterback Dylan Lemle who connected with Joseph Lewis on a 62 yard touchdown pass.

After the a few series you could tell that Hawkins coaches saw they could run the ball based on the defense alignment. Then a steady diet of running backs Darryl Dolberry #2 and Greg Johnson #3 who both reached the endzone in the first half. Dolberry showed off his speed with impressive 63 yard touchdown on the right side behind James Hilliard III #59.

Carson kept fighting in putting their best drive of half together lead by quarterback Jaja Bellinger with a long drive before Johnson intercepted a crossing route on the 3 yard line to end the drive. Johnson didn’t get the pick six but the coaches rewarded him by hand him ball for 3 yard touchdown to end the half with 26-0 lead.

The door was shut on Carson when they opened the second half to a 72 yard pick six by Hawkins safety Aashari Crosswell and 33-0 lead.

Hawkins has weapons all over the field on both side of the ball, just some great athletes with speed.

Before the game was over Carson was able to get on the scoreboard with 8 yard touchdown run by Malcolm Lutu in the 4th quarter 40-7.

Next up on Friday September 16th  Hawkins (3-0) will host Mater Dei Catholic from Chula Vista (2-0) and Carson (1-1) will travel to Westchester (3-0).

LA Sparks Drop Their 4th Game After The Break

Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles Sparks lose again Thursday night to Atlanta Dream 86-81 who was lead by forward Angel McCoughtry at Staples Center.

The Olympic break thus far has not be kind to the Sparks who now fell to record of 3-7 for last stretch of WNBA season. Luckily they had  a great start of season and have already clinched a playoff berth.

So the Sparks stars Candace Parker (3) was 1/4 players who scored in double figures with 16 points, while Nneka Ogwumike (30) 15 points, 8 rebounds.

The Dream broke their four game losing streak with this victory lead by McCoughty and her team high 32 points, 11 rebounds.

One shining light for the Sparks was Chelsea Gray who has strung back to back double digits game of 20 & 16 points.

The Los Angeles Sparks will travel to Seattle to play the Storm on Sunday September 11th, 2016 at 4pm.

Lynx too Much for Los Angeles Sparks to Handle

Los Angeles, CA- Los Angeles didn’t have enough spark left in their tank to hold off an attack from the Minnesota Lynx. Final score Minnesota 77 Los Angeles 74.

If you know anything about the Los Angeles Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx history you’d  know that this game wasn’t destined to be just another run-of-the-mill Tuesday night game. Especially knowing statistically that these two teams more or less were in a dead tie. Tonight would be the third and final face off during regular season. Each team having won game a apiece. And for a bigger picture of tonight win would also launch the winning team into the spotlight for having the best record in the league and placing them in the best position to take the number one seed in the WNBA playoffs. Bottom line this game had a lot riding on it.

Maybe the pressure that came along with tonight’s matchup was too much for the Sparks because they were really struggling to get their shots in the first quarter. Shooting only a 43.8%, and barely registering on the radar for rebounds during this quarter.

The Sparks made an attempt in the second-quarter to pull it together. And it appeared that the Lynx were trying to aid them with their shots dwindling down by 25%. Putting the Sparks within 5 points going into the half. The struggle to gain footing would find the Sparks with a defensive three second technical foul and individual technical foul on Kristi Toliver.

Unfortunately the third-quarter look no better. Christie was able to pull off a 23 foot jumper to chip away at Minnesota’s lead. But in the end it just wasn’t enough to suppress Maya Moore (20 points) Sylvia Fowles (21 points) or Lindsay Whalen (10 points)

A spark of light in this game for Los Angeles was Chelsea Gray, who broke 20 points tonight. A pleasant surprise for someone that averages 3.9 points per game. They also had three other players in double digits, Nneka Ogwuike (19 points) Candace Parker (10 points) and Kristi Toliver (11 points).

The Sparks have to quickly recover and regroup from this loss, be ready as they will be host Atlanta on Thursday, September 8. Another team that they have split the winnings with the season.

On a happier note the Sparks Nneka Ogwuike has been chosen for the fourth time this season as the Western Conference player of the week. She is ranked second in the league with 14 double-doubles. And is officially a MVP candidate for the WNBA 2016 season. Congratulations Nneka!

Senior’s two interceptions, late breakup help Aggies hold on

DALLAS (FWAA) – Texas A&M defensive back Justin Evans has been named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for his clutch performances in the Aggies’ 31-24 overtime victory over UCLA this past Saturday in College Station.

The senior from Wiggins, Miss., intercepted his first pass midway through the fourth quarter that stopped a UCLA drive at the Texas A&M 3. His other interception came with 37 seconds remaining in regulation at midfield with the score tied at 24.

Evans will be added to the Bronko Nagurski Watch List for the annual award.
