The Big three of the Fighting Irish leads team to a Victory

SAN DIEGO, CA — No. 3 Notre Dame (8-0) takes down unranked Navy (2-6) in Saturday’s matchup led by their dominant three playmakers racking up a total of 584 yards on offense in a 44-22 victory.

Notre Dame’s dominant force from start to finish stemmed from quarterback Ian Book, who threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns, running back Dexter Williams, who ran for 142 yards and had three touchdowns and wide receiver Miles Boykin who finished with two touchdowns.

Boykin is also leading the team in receiving touchdowns with six on the season.

Although, No. 3 Notre Dame started the game off a little shaky due to a fumble by Miles Boykin on the opening play of the game it didn’t affect the teams chemistry moving forward.

“There’s no point in thinking about what happened when you have the whole game ahead of you,” said quarterback Ian Book when asked about the opening play from scrimmage.

With their superior size and talent the Fighting Irish took a 27-0 lead just before halftime. While the defense kept Navy’s triple option in check, Book was able to stay comfortable in the pocket and was poised under pressure. His control during the game put the Midshipmen off-balance and left flustered as they tried to climb out of a deep hole. Book completed 27 of 33 passes, to 10 different receivers, and although he threw an interception it didn’t stop his momentum.

The Fighting Irish was just as effective on the ground running the ball as they were in the air throwing the ball.

Coming into this game Notre Dame was the only team in FBS football with three rushing touchdowns in excess of 90 yards since 2015.

Senior running back Dexter Williams has had a huge impact on the team since returning from a four game suspension at the start of the season.

He currently leads the team in all rushing categories for the season even with missing the first four games. Tonight his three touchdowns definitely helped his team come out on top.

“I don’t really try to chase stats,” said Williams when asked about his mindset for the season after coming back. “I try to go out and win each and every game with my brothers.”

Williams also stated that it does not matter whether or not he has a ton of yards on 10 or a ton of carries with little to no yards he just wants to “lay it all on the line…and just keep on winning.”

Notre Dame is now 8-0 for the first time since 2012, when it remained undefeated until being routed by Alabama in the BCS national title game.

“Glad to get out of here with a victory, with a lot of good things to build off of going into the last month,” said Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly when giving his opening statement in the post game press conference on Saturday. “What we learned today is getting off to a great start is one thing, but if you don’t play with the same physicality for four quarters, you’re going to be in trouble. So we learned a lot from today.”

Starting off fast and physical was one important factor that helped Notre Dame win tonight’s battle and also helped their defense play the way they did to ensure the victory.

Notre Dame’s defense kept Navy to two of 12 on third down, getting off the field and putting the offense in good positions.

Both sides of the ball assisted each other to bring together all moving parts.

The Notre Dame defense had yielded a single touchdown from scrimmage during the second half in the past three games coming into this game, outscoring opponents a combined 58-17 over the final 30 minutes of games. Tonight they gave up two touchdowns in the second half.

Navy (2-6), which lost its fifth straight, finally broke through thanks to some big plays that led to Zach Abey scoring two 1-yard touchdowns in the third quarter. Book was intercepted early in the fourth quarter, setting up a 33-yard touchdown run by Mike Martin.

But again, it wasn’t enough to stop the momentum the Fighting Irish had gained throughout the course of the game.

“They are ranked No, 3 for a reason,” Navy Head coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “Just a really solid, focused group. We have played coach Kelly’s teams before and this is one of his better teams.”

The two teams have now met for the 92nd consecutive time as part of an annual series that has continued uninterrupted since the 1927 campaign. Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 77-13-1.

The game, which drew a crowd of 63,626 to SDCCU Stadium in San Diego was a sellout crowd and was promoted by the San Diego Bowl Game Association.

No. 3 Notre Dame remains undefeated and in the FBS playoff picture.

USC scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to erase a 24-7 deficit but the comeback bid fell short after N’Keal Harry returned a punt 92 yards for the go-ahead score.

The Trojans had its 19-game home win streak snapped with a 38-35 loss to Arizona State Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

“Guys gave a great effort all the way a down to the end.” USC head coach Clay Helton said. “I was extremely proud of them. I told them there’d be better days ahead. I’m sad for the kids, to go out there and play that hard and not come away successful. I hurt for them.”

USC (4-4, 3-3) turned to redshirt freshman Jack Sears who made his first collegiate start after J.T. Daniels and Matt Fink suffered injuries against Utah last week.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been in a game setting,” Sears said “We did our best in fall camp and my entire time here. I gotta go out and play better in the first half. I felt comfortable in the second half and guys never stopped believing in me. It was fun to rally with them and keep competing and we fought to the very end.”

The San Clemente product completed 20-of-28 for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Sears hit Tyler Vaughns for a 52-yard touchdown with 35 seconds left in the game to make it a three-point game. USC failed to recover the onside kick and ran out of time.

Michael Pittman Jr. caught his fifth touchdown pass this season on a 6-yard pass from Sears to close the second
quarter and caught his team-best sixth touchdown pass on a 36-yard pass from Tyler Vaughns, off a lateral from Sears.

Not only did Vaughns throw a touchdown, he also caught a touchdown and returned a punt for a touchdown.

“We’ve been on the wrong side of a lot of these games,” ASU head coach Herm Edwards said. “It was fun to see them come in the locker room after beating a talented team. They had to beat a team that had won 19 in a row (at home). I told them at the end. They made it hard on me. I thought about maybe going back to television.”

Dallas, TX – SMU Mustang fans had every reason to believe that their team was in route to a victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats Saturday afternoon.

With a three point lead, the ball and only minutes remaining – the Mustangs didn’t convert third down. They had to punt the ball away to a Cincinnati team prepared to take advantage. They drove down the field with seconds to spare. Field goal kicker Cole Smith was tested three times on a 41-yard field goal, as SMU called two timeouts. He made the first two attempts and wouldn’t be denied on the third try.

“Cincinnati did a good job on that last drive,” SMU coach Sonny Dykes said. “The field goal kicker made that kick three times.”

Smith’s kick tied the game at 20 all as the clock expired.

Cincinnati chose to begin overtime on defense. Their offense would not have to take the field again. With his team in position to score, SMU quarterback Ben Hicks was picked off by Cincinnati sophomore safety James Wiggins.

Wiggins jumped the route and would return the interception 86 yards for a touchdown, leaving both SMU’s sideline and the fans stunned. The final score read 26-20, giving Cincinnati a record of 7 – 1.

“We just made a bad play in overtime,” said Dykes.

Hicks has thrown four interceptions all season – all four have been returned for touchdowns. While Saturday’s game came down to a final play, SMU had plenty of opportunities to create more separation. The three main backs – Braeden West, Ke’Mon Freeman and Xavier Jones – combined for only 36 yards on 18 carries.

The 3-5 Mustangs will host Houston at home next Saturday.

Boulder, CU – Oregon State scored 25 unanswered answered points behind quarterback Jake Luton coming off the bench to spark the Beavers. They trailed Colorado 31-3 in the third quarter before forcing overtime.

The Buffaloes had its Homecoming spoiled by Oregon State losing in overtime 41-34 Saturday at Folsom Field.

Luton came in off the bench to give Beavers a big spark finishing with 310 yards passing, 28/39 completions with 3 touchdowns.

“I just hoped I’d provide a spark for the team,” Luton said. “The guys never got down,”

Both teams had a last  attempt to end the game in regulation with a victory. The Beavers could have ended the game early if they made the last extra point. Then leaving 29 seconds on the clock, the Buffaloes set themselves up for 53-yard field goal that had no chance of going through the uprights as time expired.

“I guess you’d call this a gut-wrencher,” Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre said.

Colorado (5-3, 2-3) started off the game fast building a 24-3 lead at the half keeping the student section up on their feet. Steven Montez had a steady game completing 24/39 passes for 319 yards with 2 touchdowns.

This now is Colorado third loss in a row after starting off the season 5-0 looking to have a winning season. Today’s performance was a classic case of taking your foot off gas.

“I think we might have (coasted) a little bit,” Buffs QB Steven Montez said.

Oregon State (2-6, 1-4) coach Jonathan Smith made a key decision when he swapped backup Jake Luton for starting quarterback Jack Costello. Everybody roots for the back up and Luton didn’t disappoint the fans or his teammates.

A good defensive stop by UCLA on Utah opening drive was all but erased after a muffed punt by Adarius Pickett.

The Bruins (2-6) were in for a long night as several missed opportunities cost them momentum all throughout the night; despite a goal-line stop after the muffed punt to force a field goal.
“I misjudged the ball, Pickett said. I shouldn’t have even gone for that. That was on me”
No. 23 Utah football (6-2) would go on to throttle the Bruins 41-10 on Friday night.

“It’s a fundamental game, we have to catch a ball on offense and make a tackle on defense, UCLA head coach Chip Kelly said. “you’re not going to win a game tackling like that.”

The Utes running back Zack Moss had a field day gashing the Bruins defense to the tune of 211 yards and 3 TDs on 26 carries.
“They were well-schemed, it was my job all night to slide in and stop him,” Pickett said. “Lots of drop offs and missed tackles.”

Despite the Bruins finding hints of success with Wilton Speight under center, they found themselves playing from behind all game, which forced him to run (eight rush, 30 yards) and throw more than normal (20-for-40 for 162 yards and 2 INTs).

After a touchdown run on their second drive, the Bruins were outscored 38-3 in the final three quarters of the game.
Caleb Wilson (5 rec, 62 yds) and Theo Howard (6 rec, 51 yds) had respectable nights on the receiving end; while Joshua Kelley (16 rushes, 90 yds and a TD) had another good night until it was hampered by the Bruins inability to get a stop.
Even the small bright spots were wiped away after penalties and mistakes in key moments gave up field position, including a false start which led to JJ Molson missing a field goal to end the first half.
“We didn’t play well tonight,” Pickett said.
The Bruins will head to Eugene, OR to take on No. 19 Oregon on Saturday, Nov. 3.

UCLA quarterback Wilton Speight came off the bench and threw for 204 yards with two touchdowns to help the Bruins to a 31-30 win over Arizona Saturday night at the Rose Bowl.

“The team, that locker room, is filled with winners, led by a coaching staff full of winners,” Speight said. “And we’re going to keep winning each day and winning each meeting and winning each practice, and stack little wins until the outcome is what we want every Saturday.”

After starting the season 0-5, UCLA has won two straight games and join the hunt in the Pac-12 South after Colorado and USC suffered losses on Saturday. UCLA is one of four teams with two losses.

“Part of being a good football team is you have to finish and tonight, we were fortunate enough to finish,” UCLA head coach Chip Kelly said. “I think we overcame some of the things that we did to ourselves from a penalty standpoint but in the end, we had just enough to beat them so we’ll take it.”

UCLA scored on its opening drive for the first time this season as Thompson-Robinson connected with Kazmeir Allen for a 16-yard touchdown. Thomas-Robinson led the Bruins to a 10-0 lead, throwing 103 yards and a touchdown.

Darnay Holmes forced a fumble at the UCLA 3 and recovered it in the end zone to preserve a 17-7 lead heading into halftime.

Arizona opened the third quarter with three straight scoring drives. Two field goals by Josh Pollack and an 11-yard touchdown catch by Shawn Poindexter gave the Wildcats a 20-17.
