Utah ends Colorado’s undefeated season

Boulder, CU – Utah scored 28 unanswered points in the second half, ending Colorado’s undefeated season at Folsom Field.

Colorado’s 38-21 loss took them out of the race for the Pac-12 South title. A win against Utah along with UCLA beating USC would have brought them to the Pac-12 title game for the first time since 2016. Unfortunately, neither result occurred since UCLA also lost.

“We had an opportunity to control destiny, and we didn’t do it,” said CU head coach Karl Dorrell.

Despite losing 38-21, Colorado had a four-point lead heading into the second half thanks to an 81-yard punt return by freshman receiver Brendan Rice, son of Hall of Famer and legend receiver Jerry Rice.

Rice became the first Colorado player in history to return a punt for a touchdown and receive a touchdown in the same game after senior quarterback Sam Noyer dumped it off to Rice in the third quarter, who took it in for a 61-yard touchdown. This was Colorado’s final touchdown for the game.

Utah took advantage of a costly interception by Noyer midway through the third quarter and scored a touchdown off a 20-yard pass from senior quarterback Jake Bentley to freshman receiver Britain Covey.

Utah’s defense continued to hold Colorado’s offense as their last four drives ended in punts and turnover on downs. While Utah ended their last three drives with a 43-yard field goal from field goal kicker Jadon Redding, a 66-yard rushing touchdown from freshman running back Ty Jordan, and finally a 38-yard field goal from Redding.

Running Back Jarek Broussard fell short of a hundred yards for the first time in a game this season. The sophomore running back finished with 14 carries for 80 yards. But despite the low rushing numbers compared to his previous performances, Broussard had the best start in the first five games for an FBS rusher since 2005 with a total of 813 yards and three touchdowns.

Colorado also suffered a couple of injuries including, senior linebacker Nate Landman and junior offensive lineman Will Sherman.

It was announced early Sunday that the 4-1 Colorado Buffaloes are set to play the Oregon Ducks next Saturday at USC for a kick-off time of 7:00 p.m.

Washington to face USC in 2020 Pac-12 Football Championship Game

SAN FRANCISCO—The WASHINGTON Huskies will represent the Pac-12 North Division and meet the No. 15 USC Trojans, representing the Pac-12 South Division, in the 10th annual Pac-12 Football Championship Game, presented by 76, on Friday, December 18. The Conference title game will take place as a home-hosted model this season with USC earning the home game for United Airlines Field at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The #Pac12FCG will be televised on FOX, with coverage beginning at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET ahead of the 5 p.m. / 8 p.m. ET kickoff, and will be broadcast via ESPN Radio.

“In a football season that has thrown unprecedented challenges and adversity at our football teams and student-athletes, USC and Washington have performed at the highest levels and earned their places in the 2020 Pac-12 Football Championship Game as the Pac-12 South and North Champions,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott.

Washington (3-1, 1-1 vs. Pac-12 North) has now captured the Pac-12 North title for the third time in the last five seasons (also, 2016 & 2018), tied with OREGON for the second-most division titles in the Pac-12 era (Stanford has won four Pac-12 North titles). The Huskies have allowed 35 points-or-less in each of their last 75 games dating back to 2014, the longest such active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Huskies finished with the highest winning percentage (.750) in the Pac-12 North.

USC is ranked No. 15 in the latest CFP rankings (Dec. 8) and is currently wrapping up its regular season with a rivalry matchup against UCLA. The Trojans entered play this week having started 4-0 overall for the first time since 2017 and 4-0 in Pac-12 play for the first time since 2006. As the host for the 2020 title game, USC is making their third #Pac12FCG appearance and first since 2017.  The Trojans entered Saturday’s game needing either a win over UCLA or a loss for No. 21 Colorado as the Buffaloes fell by a score of 38-21 to UTAH.

UCLA Loss pits Kelly In Potential Hot Seat

Pasadena, CA – UCLA had this game all said and done. Going head to toe for just about the entire game, all they needed was a strong drive by Doran Thompson Robinson to set up their kicker Nicholas Barr Mira for a game winning field goal. Thompson Robinson got the Bruins to the USC 25 yard line, and Barr Mira’s kick was near perfect. With the Bruins now up two, just about every Bruin wanted to rush their mitts to the victory bell. The potential win would give Chip Kelly his first winning season as the Bruin head coach and a strong road to next year.

For the entire game, each kickoff ended up in the end zone for a touchback. With about 50 seconds left, all Barr Mira need to do was kick the ball as hard as he could to get it into the paint as USC had used up all of their timeouts. He didn’t. Retrieved at the USC 1 yard line, UCLA looked sluggish on the kickoff thinking as if the Trojans would just down the ball in the endzone. Instead, RJ Lopez hugged the sideline and ran the ball down the field, eventually being down at the UCLA 43. All USC needed was a field goal to steal the win and take back bragging rights. USC instead rubbed it back in the Bruins face and took two plays to get into the endzone that put UCLA in awe.

This article should be about how UCLA has changed their ways and now have become relevant in the Pac-12. Thompson Robinson had to sit out two games because of COVID-19 contact tracing, leaving Chase Griffin in charge. He held his ground against Oregon and had a marvelous game against Arizona. Demetric Felton had a break out season and put the UCLA running game to work all season long. The UCLA defense wrecked havoc against the backfield. These are the recipes of a team that has slowly figured themselves out and get ready for next season as talks of the town.

Instead, USC took that all away. While there is a lot to look forward to for next season, now all the pressure lies upon Chip Kelly. Regardless of this game, it would be hard to argue that Kelly would not be on the hot seat next season as he was able to lead the Bruins to a .500 season. In his first two seasons, he needed five and three games respectively to earn his first victory. In those seasons, just about every aspect was a major work in progress. Amidst a rough season for just about every college football program, Kelly had proven his worth, winning games he needed and hanging around as much as he could in the games he lost, including the USC contest. A Bruin win over USC would have put the conversation towards getting ready for next season and give Kelly credit where credit is due.

Now, Kelly could be in a bit of trouble. One could argue that with or without this game, the Bruins need a strong 2021 to consider Kelly sticking around. He will be in year four of his five year, 23 million dollar contract. Much of this is loaded with bonuses, which includes a $1 million bonus if he remains employed through February 2021 and February 2022. He will be also guaranteed $4 million next season. However, if Kelly is fired within the first four years of his contract, he would be guaranteed $9 million for potential wrongful termination. All this seems to be a recipe for Kelly to have a season that the Bruins can hope for. The bad thing: he has a roster now that has shown they can compete. The time ticks now to help relieve the sting from a Trojan loss, and that all begins in early September 2021.

Colorado Stays Undefeated as Broussard rushes 300 yards

Boulder, CU – Colorado stays undefeated as they drove through the Wild Cats with 407 rushing yards in a 24-13 win.

Sophomore running back Jarek Broussard led the charge with a career-high 301 rushing yards. Unfortunately, he did not score a touchdown in a game where he became the fourth player in Colorado Buffalo history to rush for 300 yards—the first time since October 12, 2002.

The Arizona Wildcats tried everything to stop him, but his record-breaking season has turned him into a formidable foe with the most rushing yards ever in Colorado history in the first four games with 733 yards.

“I don’t think any of us are surprised,” Colorado head coach Karl Dorrell said about Broussard. “He was doing the same type of thing during training camp.”

The 4-0 Buffaloes fell behind with a 13-point deficit in the first half: the largest one this season. The Wildcat’s opening drive led to their only touchdown for the game with a 26-yard run from senior running back Gary Brightwell.

With a season-high of five quarterback sacks, including four on third down for the second straight game, the defense held on tight and never let the Wildcats score again. After allowing over 30-points in the first two games, the defense has stepped up and not allowed 20-points in the last two games against two Arizona teams.

Their dominant performance allowed the offense to recover as well, and Colorado was able to come up with 24-unanswered points to win the game.

“Our defense did a nice job of getting themselves back in control. (Arizona) had a couple of great opportunities to put points on the board, and they went for a couple fourth-down situations, and the defense came up big,” Dorrell said. “They were inside the 5-yard line, and we had a tackle for loss play, and we created a huge play on fourth and 5.”

Sophomore outside linebacker Carson Wells and senior inside linebacker Nate Landman both had monster defensive performances. Landman with 16 tackles (12 solos), including 3.5 for a loss, and Welles with 11 tackles (seven total) and four tackles for a loss with 1.5 sacks.

USC starts fast and goes on to rout Washington State to remain undefeated

Los Angeles, CA – It was all USC in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 28-0 lead. Amon-Ra St. Brown put on a show with four touchdown receptions in the opening quarter and No. 16 USC rolled to a 38-13 win over Washington State on Sunday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

“The last game where I had four touchdowns was actually my first game in high school as a junior,” St. Brown said. “That’s the last time I had four touchdowns in a game. So, for it to come today, in college, was crazy because it’s very uncommon. I’m just glad my teammates and coaches trusted me.”

St. Brown’s four touchdowns in the first quarter tied the NCAA record for touchdowns of any kind in a single quarter, a feat accomplished only seven other times and last done by Terry Caulley of UConn vs. Kent State on Nov. 9, 2002.

“I thought we really started out hot and the playmakers did an amazing job,” USC head coach Clay Helton said. “There’s a reason that ‘C’ is on Amon-Ra St. Brown’s chest because he is an unselfish player. You go three games and you’re not in the end zone, we talked about it and don’t change a thing. Touchdowns come in bunches and he’s just played the same, unselfish, physical game each and every week.”

After an incomplete pass to start the game, sophomore quarterback Kedon Slovis completed 17 consecutive passes in the first half and finished the game with 287 yards and five touchdowns.

After stopping the Cougars on fourth-and-one in the opening drive, USC drove down the field with the help of Drake London’s 20 and 30 yard receptions.

Slovis hit St. Brown on a 7-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Following a three-and-out by Washington State, Slovis connected with St. Brown once again, this time for a 22-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing drive, USC safety Talanoa Hufanga tipped the pass to himself for the interception, hurdled a would be tackler, and returned it 37 yards to the Cougars’ 4-yard line. USC didn’t waste any time, pitching the ball to St.Brown on 1st-and-goal for his third touchdown of the game.

An interception by Olaijah Griffin set up St. Brown’s fourth touchdown of the game. Slovis hit Tyler Vaughn down the right sideline for a 35-yard touchdown and a 35-0 lead in the second quarter. Washington State running back Travell Harris scored on a 5-yard run but the Cougars missed the extra point and trailed 35-6 heading into halftime.

“I thought Kedon (Slovis) was extremely accurate in this game 25-of-32 including five touchdowns,” Helton said. “We didn’t play our best ball in the second half, so there’s always some stuff that we can crack down on offensively, but to get a 25-point win, 16 point win last week and 25-point win this week, I think we’re making progress each week.”

USC was held to field goal in the second half and the Cougars added a late touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Trojans defense forced three turnovers and held Washington State’s offense to 263 total yards.

Up next for USC is the 90th showdown with crosstown rival UCLA at the Rose Bowl next Saturday. The Trojans are one win away from a berth in the PAC-12 title game.

Bruins survive ASU comeback, above .500 for first time in four years

Tempe, AZ – After leading 17-3 into halftime, UCLA had complete dominance throughout the game. Arizona State looked sluggish in the first 30 minutes, whereas the Bruins found rhythm. The tables turned once the third quarter hit, and many UCLA fans had a funny feeling when they saw their lead slip away gaining just 11 yards in their first 18 plays of the second half. All that weight was lifted off of their shoulders on a key drive late in the game with a great mix in the air and on the ground. UCLA escapes with a 25-18 win and puts them over .500 for the first time since 2017.

“All of our game was dictated by ASU’s defense,” “It was huge to get Dorian back for us to help bring out a balanced attack. Dorian’s legs and arms, and how limited our running game was, allowed for us to take control.”

Since Kelly took over the program, the Bruins have started off their seasons on the wrong end. It looked that way when they lost to Colorado in their season opener. Now, it seems as if the Buffs loss may actually be a loss they can reflect on, considering they have now won three of their last four contests. To do it also with a backup quarterback in their last two contests and hang around against a tough Oregon team has shown that UCLA just needed a game to figure themselves out.

“I am really proud of our defense,” “We talked about playing hard and playing hard for 60 minutes. Our offense was big today, but our defense was huge to get us a big win.”

Arizona State did not end up being a walk in the park, however. UCLA’s 17-0 lead to start the game helped off by Dorian Thompson Robinson’s play with two first half touchdowns, one on the ground. Arizona State only managed a field goal and was forced to punt in three of their five drives in the first half. All that changed when Jayden Danleis goes trick play, allowing wide receiver Ricky Pearsall connect on a long pass play after a reverse for over 50 yards. Arizona State scores into the end zone three plays later. It might have been the shock the Bruins felt after as they only managed a handful of yards throughout the third and part of the fourth quarter. They eventually saw their lead dwindle after giving up a safety and then another score to give ASU an 18-17 lead.

UCLA’s final drive managed 11 plays but only took just over three minutes. Just like in the first half, both Thompson Robinson and Felton took care of the Bruins offense. Felton’s short run to the endzone and a two point conversion gave UCLA the lead right back. Arizona State was stopped on their final drive that wrapped things up.

With Felton limited running for just 45 yards on 10 carries, Thompson-Robinson instead led all ball carriers with 15, which allowed for UCLA to take command of mixing their game plan around. It was what they wanted against ASU.

“I am blessed to be off for two weeks and have the chance to get back in the game mid week and prepare the right way,” Thompson Robinson said. “It felt nice to get back out there, but I give a lot of credit to the coaching staff to prepare me and my team for a game like this.”

UCLA now rides an above .500 record for the first time in years. What could change this program for the better? A win over USC next week can certainly change a lot of minds as to which football program has begin to figure themselves out, even if it has taken a few years to make that happen.

UCLA Played A Complete Game Over Arizona

Pasadena, CA –

What can you make after a UCLA win like this?

Still without Dorian Thompson Robinson, the Bruins seemed like all they wanted to do was get just enough to squeak by a 27-10 win over Arizona. Chase Griffin’s stats were not all that impressive, but he got the job done with a 129 yard and one touchdown night. Demetric Felton had nearly 200 yards rushing along with another touchdown. But it was the UCLA defense and bad Arizona miscues that gave the Bruins control of the game from the second quarter on.

“I am proud of our guys tonight,” Bruins head coach Chip Kelly said. “Demetric played his heart out and had a career night. Chase was also great as well. I preached all week long about ball security and our offense protected the ball when they needed to.”

“It is a blessing to be where we were tonight,” Griffin said. “Our offense did a great job doing the job that we needed to get the win. Our defense and special teams were als stellar. Clearly it was a team win tonight that we all earned together.”

After going down 7-3 in the first, the Bruins eventually got comfortable, taking the lead on a 16 yard pass to Brittain Brown. After forcing a turnover on downs, the Bruins got Felton involved, needing just five plays with all on the ground leading him in to his only score. While the Bruins were unable to get anything on the offensive end in the third quarter with three straight three and outs, UCLA’s defense came through when they were need most, only allowing a field goal the rest of the way.

UCLA also snagged two interceptions, both coming on the final drives for Arizona.

“It is a combination of our entire defensive crew,” Kelly said. “At the beginning of the season we talked about bringing the best guys possible in order to win football games. Credit our defense and our defensive staff to get the job done, especially tonight.”

UCLA, now at 2-2, has looked far better in comparison to their Colorado game. While hanging around against Oregon last week, the Bruins have given a lot to work with for Kelly. Losing their starting quarterback seems to have made this more than just a next man up kind of scenario, possibly proving that Kelly’s recruits may be a benefit for the future of the program.

“With our guys, and with Chase who had to step up like he had to tonight,” Kelly said. “It is nice to have players who can adjust under times like this. We have smart football players and our dedication is pretty high.”
UCLA will have their chance to go above .500 again as they head to Tempe to face Arizona State. The Sun Devils have not played since week 1 of the Pac-12 season as they have dealt with COVID and roster issues, missing out on three straight games.

Cal turnovers the AX to Stanford

Los Angeles, CA- Stanford seized opportunities all afternoon accepting Cal’s gift of a victory. The third phase of the game Special Teams was the gamechanger, the final extra point block was the dagger for Cal. The final score Stanford Cardinal 24 Cal Bears 23 with 14 points off of turnovers.

After Cal Scored on 3rd and Goal, Cal decided to play for overtime going for one and not for the win going for two. Stanford got a big push on the right side during the extra point and blocked it with 58 seconds left on the game clock.

Grinding out a victory and finding a way to win is how David Shaw’s Cardinal did it. Now Stanford did amass 300 total yards behind fifth year quarterback Davis Mills who threw for 205 yards (24-32 passing) with a touchdown and no interceptions.

Austin Jones carried the load on the ground with 21 carries for 85 tough yards with 2 touchdowns for Stanford.

The 123rd Big Game as always for big bragging rights and it was the winner first victory in this crazy wild 2020 PAC-12 Covid-19 season. Before today’s match up both teams were unsuccessful in first two outings.

Cal has to be disappointed with the outcome but not the offensive output of the field with 392 total yards with 241 of those yards on the ground.

Damien Moore rushed for 121 yards, breaking a long 54-yard run where he was caught from behind.

On Cal opening series after the second half the running back fumbled to allow Stanford another opportunity and that they did turning it into a touchdown and first lead of the game 17-10 third quarter.

Just before the half with Stanford trailing 3-10 with just under 5 mins, the momentum switched after Cal muffed punt gave new life. Then a few plays later Stanford took advantage of the turnover making it a 10-10 game. To close out the half Stanford also blocked the field goal to keep the Bears off the scoreboard.

The nightmare of errors was to much in the end to overcome, muffed punt, fumble and blocked extra point.

The AX now will move back across the bay for the year with Stanford.

Oregon State Upsets Oregon In Their 124th Rivalry Game

CORVALLIS, OR– In their 124th meeting, the Oregon State Beavers narrowly defeated the 15th ranked Oregon Ducks 41-38, earning Jonathan Smith what is arguably his biggest win to date as head coach. Smith, who led the Beavers to a Fiesta Bowl victory as their starting quarterback in 2001, now brings them to 2-2 in his third season as head coach and increases his record to 9-19.

The Ducks started quickly after they easily moved the ball on the game’s opening possession, which was capped by a 37-yard touchdown run from Jaylon Redd. Oregon State answered immediately, however, as star running back Jermar Jefferson took his first carry 82-yards for the tying score. Jefferson finished the night with 226 yards on 29 attempts and 2 touchdowns.

Despite a poor performance from Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough, the Ducks led the majority of the game and were up 31-19 heading into the 4th quarter. The turning point for the Beavers came after they capitalized on Shough’s third turnover, where Nashon Wright intercepted Shough’s pass inside Oregon’s territory. The Beavers scored in two plays to take their first lead of the game at 34-31 after a 2-yard Jefferson touchdown run and a two-point conversion by quarterback Tristan Gebbia.

Trying to make a game winning stand while the Ducks led 38-34 with only 40 seconds left on the clock, Oregon stopped Gebbia on an attempted 3rd and goal quarterback sneak from inches out. Gebbia suffered an injury on the play, forcing the junior college transfer from Saddleback College, Chance Nolan, to enter the game. On his first Division I snap, Nolan stepped up and scored the game winning touchdown on another quarterback sneak.

At 2-2, Oregon State looks to record their first winning season under Jonathan Smith next week as they travel to face the University of Utah. Oregon will try to bounce back on the road against Cal after losing their fist game of the season, and possibly falling out of the College Football Playoff rankings.

NFL’s first all-Black officiating crew live on Monday Night Football

Los Angeles, CA – Are we ready for some football, well Black America who love sports will be tuning in tonight for a Week 11 match up being officiated by an all Black crew. This will be the first time for the NFL with the lights burning bright for the nation to see.

“Hope, Achievement, and Finally, ” said Tony Crittendon local Los Angeles Based Referee.

This night will be a historic milestone, with the all-Black officiating crew will work an NFL game but, the BIG Ten NCAA Conference already beat them to the punch. On October 24, 2020 on ABC in a game between Michigan @ Minnesota also with full black crew that also included Replay official, Communicator and the Timer.

So yes the NFL is still late to the party, in this case folks will still stand up a salute this effort.

“This historic Week 11 crew is a testament to the countless and immeasurable contributions of Black officials to the game, their exemplary performance, and to the power of inclusion that is the hallmark of this great game.” said Troy Vincent NFL VP of football operations.

The Los Angeles Rams led by a strong defense with Aaron Donald up front and Jalen Ramsey in the secondary looking to slow down the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Just as kids will be watching the players play the game, there will be Youth League, High School, Junior College, and College officials envisioning themselves in this game too.

“This is very aspiring for young black officials,” said Kevin Morris JUCO/ High School Referee.

White Hat (Referee) Jerome Boger will lead the crew. He’s a former Morehouse College quarterback in his 17th year as a league official. Boger worked Super Bowl XLVII in February 2013.

Monday night’s group will include umpire Barry Anderson, down judge Julian Mapp, line judge Carl Johnson, side judge Dale Shaw, field judge Anthony Jeffries and back judge Greg Steed.

The NFL typically assembles its 17 officiating crews prior to the season and works to keep them together for each game to promote cohesion and communication.

Four of the NFL’s 17 referee/crew chiefs are Black — Boger, Ron Torbert, Adrian Hill and Shawn Smith — a higher percentage than for NFL coaches or general managers. Two members of its three-man leadership team, senior vice president of officiating Al Riveron and senior vice president of officiating administration Perry Fewell, are minorities.

The NFL hired Burl Toler, the first Black official in any major sports league, in 1965.
