Los Angeles, CA – What looked to be a blowout turned into a close game as the USC defense gave up 469 total yards and 28 second-half points to California.

USC star quarterback Caleb Williams wouldn’t let the No. 9 Trojans lose after throwing four
touchdown passes and rushing for another score in a 41-35 win over California Saturday night
at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Trojans were without starting wide receivers Jordan Addison and Mario Williams but
Micheal Jackson III stepped up with 115 yards and two touchdowns. Tahj Washington finished
with seven receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown while running back Travis Dye added 98
yards on 15 carries and a score to help USC improve to 8-1.

“The reality is this team is 8-1 with everything in front of us.” said USC coach Lincoln Riley.

Jaydn Ott gave California a 7-0 lead on its opening drive with a 10-yard touchdown run. USC
answered on the ensuing possession with a 10-play, 72-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard
touchdown run from Williams.

USC took a 13-7 lead in the second quarter on Dye’s 12-yard run. After the Trojans intercepted
Jake Plummer, Williams hit Jackson III for a 7-yard touchdown and a 20-7 with 53 seconds left
in the second quarter.

On the opening possession of the third quarter, Williams connected with Jackson III once again,
this time for a 59-yard touchdown. California cut the lead 27-14 when Plummer found Monroe
Young for a 2-yard touchdown.

Williams gave USC a 34-14 lead after throwing an 8-yard touchdown pass to Washington.
California opened the fourth quarter with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Plummer to Marvin
Anderson. Plummer passed for 406 yards and three touchdowns.

“We didn’t play our best,” said coach Riley, “Really on any of the sides.”

California recovered an onside kick and Jeremiah Hunter scored from 3 yards out to cut the
Trojans lead 34-27 with 9:00 left in the fourth quarter. USC tight end Lake McRee caught a 2-
yard touchdown to extend the Trojans lead 41-27.

California played hard until the end and used a 12-play, 85-yard drive to get to the USC 4-yard
line where Ott scored to cut the lead 41-35 with 2:31 left in the fourth quarter.

Purdue has no answers for Iowa

West Lafayette, IN- The Boilermakers could not overcome the crazy weather and two costly interceptions by Aidan O’Commell in the 24-3 defeat to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

“It was a bad day for us,” said Purdue coach Jeff Brohm “We got a lot of work to do.”

The Hawkeyes 376 yards total yards for the game wasn’t off the charts but solid enough for a Big Ten victory to keep fighting for a move in the bowl game selections.

Spencer Petras threw for 2 touchdowns and 192 yards completing 13/23 passes. As for most quarterbacks the big fellas are their security blankets. Tight end Sam LaPorta led his team with 71 yards 3 catches with a touchdown.

“We gotta be more efficient (passing game) , if not then we need to be more balance.” said coach Broham

Now Kaleb Johnson was a workhorse carrying the football 22 times for 200 yards and a touchdown. Johnson vision was a major factor for his 9.1 yards per carry average.

On third down Purdue was only able to pick up two first downs on 16 attempts. Only average 3.4 yards per play wasn’t close to be enough to get points on the score board.

The Boilermakers didn’t abandon the running game, Devin Mockobee carried 14 times for 65 yards against the Hawkeyes.

Now Iowa will host Wisconsin who is searching hard for wins. Purdue will have the opportunity to bounce back and travel to #14 Illinois and earn a hard fought win.

Huskies overtake the Beavers after dark

Photo by Kwame Kang / fi360 News

Seattle, WA – The power slowed down both teams but the Washington Huskies outlasted the Oregon State power surge of the Beavers on Friday night. Huskies led by Michael Penix Jr controlled the balance attack with 24-21 victory.

Trailing the Beavers to start the 4th quarter, but staying in striking distance. They never stopped fighting for a victory knowing anything but a win was going to be unacceptable.

Photo by Kwame Kang / fi360 News

“We have a goal of winning championships, and we talked about it at halftime,” Huskies coach Kalen DeBoer.

Penix Jr. found 8 different receivers throwing for 298 yards with a touchdown. He could be a little more efficient with his passes completing 30/52. Rome Odunze was findings the gaps in the Beavers defense catching 7 passes for 102 yards.

The ground game filled in the gaps by having Wayne Taulapappa reach the end zone 2 times. Cameron Davis led the Huskies with 11 carries for 55 yards.

Photo by Kwame Kang / fi360 News

“I’m proud of the way the guys were just resilient,” DeBoer said.

Beavers pushed the ball down the field most of the night adding almost all the pressure the Huskies could handle. Running downhill controlling the clock was working for three quarters.

The running game was working for 175 yards total, with Damien Martinez carrying the load on 19 carries for 107 yards. Deshaun Fenwick dipped into the end zone twice with 5 carries for 37 yards.

The Beavers were unsuccessful on fourth down on both attempts that could have pushed the game in their favor.

Photo by Kwame Kang / fi360 News

“We’re going to err on aggression down there,” Beavers coach Jonathan Smith.

Beavers accomplished next to nothing through the air. Quarterback Ben Gulbranson completed 12 of 19 passes for only 87 yards total. Beavers receiver was Tre’Shaun Harrison, who caught five passes to lead his team for 15 yards.

Now Oregon State will host Cal next Saturday looking for another win to add to their already bowl eligible record of 6-3 overall.

Washington will travel to #8 Oregon and try to shake up the road to PAC-12 Championship in Vegas by getting the team 8 win on the season.

Kraken grind out thrilling win against Penguins behind stellar defensive effort

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

Seattle, WA – With both teams coming off of frustrating losses to the Vancouver Canucks, the contest between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Seattle Kraken proved to be a bounce back for someone. It proved to be the less likely Kraken, who put out one of their strongest defensive performances to date. With some unique offense that saw two goals called off due to challenge and only one goal allowed, this game shows what the Kraken can be if they put in a 60-minute effort.

As has been noted throughout the entirety of this teams’ playing existence, the Kraken defensive units and goaltending have drawn the frustration of the fanbase. The team’s primary weakness and issue number one to address going forward seemed like a thing of the past in this matchup with Pittsburgh, as the Kraken held the likes of Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin, and crew to just the one goal. A breakaway goal by Jake Guentzel with Kraken defensemen on his back put Pittsburgh on the board first, but Seattle was locked in after that. Seattle netminder Martin Jones reflected on the game.

“It’s been a roller coaster, just trying to wrap my head around playing hockey today. Sometimes, when you’re not thinking too much, things work out for you. That might have been the case today,” Jones remarked in regards to playing just hours after his son was born.

Both Jordan Eberle and Martin Jones welcomed a new member of their family into their lives in the form of the newborn prior to today’s game, so the term “dad strength” came into play. While Jones held it down between the pipes for Seattle, Jordan Eberle and the Kraken attack stayed resilient to beat Pittsburgh goaltender Casey DeSmith twice. While two potential goals for Seattle were called off for offsides and a high stick respectively, the Kraken remained undeterred by the bad luck. A little over midway through the second period, the line of Jaden Schwartz, Matty Beniers, and Jordan Eberle found each other in succession to end the play with an Eberle goal. Eberle discussed the day, postgame.

“This is special. Something you’ll always remember. I’ll be able to tell him I scored after he was born, but I think more importantly, we got the win… After having a couple of goals disallowed, the resilience to continue to go at it and find a way to win — that was big,” Eberle said of his newest son, Deacon.

This game was an excellent example of the sort of potential that this Seattle hockey team has, if in fact they play out the entirety of the three periods. The Penguins are solid club year in and year out, and it would be a tall task to shut them out, so allowing a goal is fine. To hold them to one, while staying patient and battling through some bad luck on challenges to score twice and then add an empty netter, shows the toughness this team has. With top talent such as rookie Matty Beniers, free agent addition Andre Burakovsky leading the attack, getting goals from fourth liner Morgan Geekie tonight displays the depth this team has.

The Kraken will get a few days before their next game, on Tuesday, November 1st. Seattle will head on the road to battle their Pacific

Division rival Calgary Flames. With a relatively new look roster, the Flames and free agent addition Nazeem Kadri will host Seattle inside of the Scotiabank Saddledome with a puck drop of 6PM PST. The winner of this matchup will likely take temporary hold of third place in the division.

UCLA Recovers From Oregon Loss With Convincing Victory Over Stanford

Pasadena, CA – It is time to start taking UCLA seriously.

If you haven’t been following this team by now, you have missed what a complete football team is in the West Coast. Each win the Bruins have had this season has all been done by complete games by their offense and stellar play by their defense. Even in their loss to Oregon the Bruins showed they weren’t afraid to keep up with the Ducks. Dorian Thompson Robinson threw for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns, while Zach Charbonnet ran for over 140 yards. Combined the two teams punted the ball just once.

In their 38-13 win over Stanford, the Bruins rarely took their foot off the gas pedal. Forced turnovers resulted in points. Touches by Thompson Robinson and Charbonnet made the UCLA offense very difficult to stop. Once they got to a three score lead, the short game came out. While the Bruins struggled to convert on third downs (5-15), they converted all five of their fourth down plays, one resulting in a 30 yard touchdown run by Charbonnet. Everything and then some is going right for this Bruin football team.

“It was a collaboration for our entire defensive group,” Bruins head coach Chip Kelly said. “Our first defense did an unbelievable job. Our receiver coverage and run stop was solid. Our offensive line did an amazing job helping the run game and giving our guys on the ground and in the air a great game.”

Thompson Robinson finished 18-29 for 199 yards. He also ran for 50 yards. Charbonnet, proving again to be more than just a Pac-12 Player of the Year candidate, ran for 198 yards and three touchdowns. Defensitley UCLA only allowed 95 yards in the first half. Stanford only converted four third downs on 13 attempts. They also held the Cardinal to just 17 first downs.

“Charbonnet did everything, and he helped in our pass game,” Kelly said. “There is a reason why he will be playing at the next level when he is done here.”

This certainly has taken Chip Kelly years to build a program that he wants, and he is having fun doing it. The players he has have bought into what the program needs to be successful. While UCLA may not return back to the top 10 after their win over Stanford, each game now means much more to stay alive for a possible Pac-12 championship. That is definitely different compared to playing in games late in the season just to be bowl eligible.

While the Bruins don’t have very many challenging games the rest of the season as well, the most difficult part now in their season is to not look ahead. Sure they have USC at home on their schedule in three weeks, but that doesn’t mean Arizona State and Arizona are automatic wins. The Sun Devils have improved since firing head coach Herm Edwards, and the Wildcats hung around against USC Saturday night. If they want the Trojan game to have meaning, checklists need to be completed first.

“Our world is all about the future,” Kelly said. “When we live our life in the past I feel bad for those who do. We always set our sights on Monday morning and get ready for next week. Everyone is buying into our philosophy.”

ASU too much for Colorado to handle

Boulder, CU – Arizona St had there way in the air and on land running though Colorado defense for a 42-34 victory on the road.

Sun Devils field general Trenton Bourguet (#16) amassed 435 yards with 3 touchdowns on 32/43 passes. His tight end Jalin Conyers (#12) was the touchdown machine catching all three for 108 yards. Conyers just was a hard cover for the backers to deal with his size and speed for a big man.

“He’s a big mismatch problem,” Bourguet said of Conyers. “He’s big but fast and has great hands. So just trying to give him a chance, a 50-50 ball. I trust in him to come down with it — just giving him a chance and he did the rest.”

The pass was opened up by the legs of running back Xazavian Valladay who seemed to get strong as the game went on. Valladay carried the football 23 times for 118 yards and reaching the end zone 3 times to match Conyers performance.

Colorado early highlight was a touchdown pass to Montana Lemonious-Craig snatched post off play action held backers from getting depth in the second quarter 14-10 with 10:59 on the clock. Trout also hit Jordyn Tyson on a long  3rd down for 58 yard touchdown to bring game 21-16 with 3:17 before the half.

Sun Devils Bourguet went 9/9 in the first quarter to get his team off to fast start 14-3 lead before the fireworks.

“We had a great week of practice, kind of a new scheme, but just trusting in what we practiced all week.” said Bourguet.

Both teams lit up the score board scoring a combined 28 points in the second quarter to give the fans something to see.

Buffalos quarterback J.T. Shrout (#5) was able to throw for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns with one interceptions.

Arizona St was first to score with a 9-yard touchdown by Xazavian Valladay (#1) who some would say is one of the top running back in the nation.

It was a chilly 55 degrees at kickoff at Folsom Field with nice size crowd.

The freshman receiver Tyson (#4) made a statement in the 4th quarter with an amazing 87 punt return to give little life to Buffaloes trailing by only 8 points with less 4 minutes in the game.

Colorado will hit the film room and get ready to host Oregon here at Boulder. Arizona St will host UCLA both playing next Saturday November 5th.

Bo Nix’s 6 Total Touchdowns Too Much For Cal

Berkley Calif, Oregon Quarterback Nix,Bo celebrates after scoring a rushing touchdown in the first half of an NCAA college football game at California Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Oct 29, 2022 (photo by Jorge Birelas /fi360news

Berkley, CA – Quarterback Bo Nix and the Oregon Ducks offense has looked like one of the most electrifying offenses in the Pac-12. Today the Cal Bears got to see that for themselves. Bo Nix had 3
touchdowns in the air and 3 on the ground and even with 2 picks, Nix still was in full control of
the offense from the opening drive to their final possession.

On Cal’s side of things, this was the 5th loss of the season, but it didn’t come without a fight
from the Bears. Jaydn Ott had his worst performance of the season so far with only 57 yards on
14 carries. Jack Plummer had 214 yards and 1 touchdown, but in the 4th quarter he showed
signs of pain and the rest of the quarter we saw Kai Millner behind center and for the final
touchdown of the game, Milner threw a 55 yard pass to Justin Richard Baker. It would be
Milner’s second of 2 touchdowns during his time on the field, but it wasn’t enough, Bo Nix and
that stacked Oregon offensive core would win 42-24.

Before the game my focus was on two longtime friends and former teammates at
Menlo-Atherton, Cal’s CB Jeremiah Earby and Oregon’s WR Troy Franklin. Playing almost their
whole lives together in Palo Alto and being part of the highly respected Menlo-Atherton football
team, this would be these 2 young stars’ first time going head to head.

When asked how they were feeling going against each other for the first time in college, Earby said “It’s exciting going up against someone I’ve been teammates with basically all my life. It’s definitely going to be intense every snap we line up. “ and Franklin said, “I’m very excited, it’s really just another
game, but it’ll be fun playing at home.”

The excitement was felt the moment they saw each other on the field and when I mentioned the idea of some smack talk just for friendly competition, Earby said “Facts! It’s definitely going to be a lot of words said.” I couldn’t hear it from my seat in the house, but I saw the competition from both the boys. My sources say that between the two of them Earby won the head to head, but it’s because they didn’t try him over the top.

Seeing these kids go from high school to playing on national tv for legendary schools, it’s beautiful to
see and even more heartwarming knowing that they can still be such competitors as well as
good friends.

Kraken give lowly Canucks first win of season in frustrating 5-4 loss

Seattle, WA – In their supposed “rivalry,” the Seattle Kraken remain winless against the Vancouver Canucks. Despite being the better team and dominating the pace for the majority of the contest, Seattle still could not find a way to secure a victory against their rivals to the North. The Kraken specialty teams struggled, and the defensive lapses continue to hang over their head like a pesky cold that just won’t go away. Now nine games into the season, there are obvious positives for this Kraken team, as well as the same negatives that remain unchanged from last year.

While the competitive aspect of this Pacific division “rivalry” has yet to come to fruition, the physical aspect was on full display to begin the contest. A little over two minutes into the opening period, Canucks forward Tanner Pearson took exception to a hit by Kraken defensemen Adam Larsson, and the two dropped the gloves for an epic bout. Exactly a minute later, Seattle’s Carson Soucy and Vancouver’s JT Miller threw down as tensions seemed high. Unfortunately, the fights left Seattle without two defensemen for four minutes total, and resulted in a Canucks goal.

Seattle did find some offense to end the first period on a high note, scoring twice in the final minute. The second period saw Vancouver answer and take the lead again as the puck got stuck between Karson Kuhlman’s skates, eventually popping out to a wide-open Ilya Mikheyev who scored on a one-timer. Fast forward ten minutes later, and Vancouver’s JT Miller was left wide open, his shoot being redirected in by Andrei Kuzmenko for the third Canucks goal of the

night. An inability to clear the puck effectively and leaving men wide open in the faceoff circle, issues the Kraken defensemen continue to have. When asked whether this was a case of his team’s defensive lapses or Vancouver’s hunger to win, here is what Seattle head coach Dave Hakstol had to say.

“We were the better team most of the night, but they beat us on specialty teams by one, and that was ultimately the difference in the hockey game… You’re not going to be able to carry momentum all night, but we carried the momentum for most of the night,” Hakstol stated.

For the majority of the season, the Kraken power play has been much improved, similar to the entirety of the offensive scoring as compared to last season. The penalty kill has struggled all season long, a major early season issue for the team. Tonight, both sides of special teams struggled for Seattle, as the Kraken went 1-4 on the power play, and went 0-2 on the penalty kill. With tonight’s results, the Kraken penalty kill unit dropped to the 31st ranked in the league, and Vancouver ranks as the 32nd. The specialty teams are an earlier indicator of issues that hold Seattle back from being a legitimately good team. Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol spoke about his special team’s units postgame.

“We weren’t able to get the timely power play goal. Our penalty kill was a matter of finishing, we did everything right except for getting the clears. On those clears, a clear or a save makes all of the difference,” Hakstol remarked.

To close out their homestand, the Kraken will welcome the 4-2-1 Pittsburgh Penguins to Climate Pledge Arena. Seattle will be looking back to bounce back from another one of their characteristic frustrating losses, attempting to do so against a tough Penguins team.

The last time the two teams met in Seattle, Pittsburgh romped to a 6-1 victory. Puck drop for the Saturday, October 29th matchup will be at 7PM PST.

Kraken rout Sabres in 5-1 dominating win to open homestand

Seattle, WA – Coming off of a frustrating loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, the Seattle Kraken came out and handled business in game one of their three game homestand. After jumping to a two-goal lead, Seattle made sure that they wouldn’t blow this one, pouring on an additional three to defeat a hot Buffalo Sabres team that never got into a rhythm. A complete team effort over an entire 60 minutes, performances like this give a glimpse into the potential of the Kraken, if only they could display this consistently.

The line that put out the most offensive contribution in this game against the fast-paced Sabres was not the top line, nor the two after that. The fourth and final Kraken forward line poured in a total of six points and showed off their talent all night long, carrying the load. Two of the players on the line tallied two assists each (Daniel Sprong and Brandon Tanev) and two of them tallied a goal each (Morgan Geekie and Sprong), outscoring Buffalo on their own. Production such as tonight’s, especially from players such as Geekie and Sprong who are playing for their roster spot, is a great display of the team’s depth. Seattle head coach Dave Hakstol reflected on the fourth lines performance.

“They had a good night, they got us off to a good start… they did a good job. That group was able to contribute for us offensively and that’s important for our group to have that depth of scoring,” Hakstol remarked.

The Kraken special teams have been like both ends of a battery: one negative, one positive. The Seattle power play ranks near the top of the league despite going quiet in the loss to the Blackhawks on Sunday. The Kraken penalty kill ranks nearly dead last in the NHL. Tonight, the penalty kill eliminated five power plays for the Sabres, and the Kraken tallied two power plays. Early into this young 2022-2023 season, the Kraken power play has seen a near 360-degree change from its inaugural season self. If that isn’t just a mirage, with an improved penalty kill, Seattle may push for a playoff berth sooner rather than later. Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol reflected on the specialty teams play in tonight’s contest.

“The power play has been good all year. We went out tonight, generated, and did a pretty good job. It’s not just about producing offense and scoring goals, it’s about the timeliness of it. Jared McCann’s at the end of the second period is a well-timed goal… In terms of the PK, it’s everybody doing their part. It was a skilled power play we were playing against tonight, but we were able to get our pressure and get our clears when we needed it,” Hakstol stated.

The Kraken play the second of a three game homestand on Thursday, October 27th when they welcome the Vancouver Canucks to town. Vancouver has struggled mightily to begin the year, blowing multi-goal leads and having fans throw their jerseys on the ice in reaction to the teams play. Puck drop between the Pacific Division rivals is at 7PM PST inside of Climate Pledge Arena.

Huskies Win A Shootout In Berkeley

Berkeley, California – A back and forth game with the lead trading sides all the way to the 4th quarter, where Michael Pinex Jr. and the Huskies squeaked out a final touchdown to win the game 28-21.

The two offenses who put up a lot of yards and points were in a face off on this Saturday night and to make it an even bigger event its the night Marshawn Lynch was inducted to the University of California’s athletic hall of fame. The Washington Huskies, who averaged 300+ yards a game before this game, would face a Cal defense that averages 3-4 turnovers a game.

Washington’s no huddle offense run by quarterback Pinex Jr. from the first quarter till the final whistle showed fans why they are one of the most electric offenses that no one in sports is talking about.

Pinex Jr. put together a total of 374 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, but
Cal’s quarterback Jack Plummer a team captain fought back with 245 yards and 3 touchdowns in the air.

The difference in how these quarterbacks distributed the ball, and how many hands touched the ball in one game. For Cal it was the usual playmakers getting chances. Ott, Sturdivant, Brooks, and Anderson all were below average for today, but still made plays when their number was called. As for Washington 11 different players touched the rock, whether that be receiving or rushing.

With a final score 28-21 in favor for the Huskies and even though it’s a tough loss for Cal on top of what’s been a tougher season. Marshawn Lynch being on the sidelines and messing around on the cart during halftime made Cal Bears’ fans at least happy to be in the stadium on a chilly fall October night.

Next week though Cal faces an Oregon team that’s coming off a huge win against UCLA and for some of the players on both teams in that game, it’s more than a game, it’s a family reunion. Stay tuned for next week
