USC holds on late to defeat rival UCLA

Pasadena, CA – Who runs LA? That was the question we heard all season long and we finally got our answer!

USC took down crosstown rival UCLA 48-45 in an instant classic at the legendary Rose Bowl Stadium.

Those in attendance watched the sparks fly in this high scoring affair. The energy in the arena was like no other and both teams gave there all till the clock showed double zeros.

The Bruins jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s one yard touchdown run. The Trojans squandered multiple early opportunities to put points on the board and a Caleb Williams interception led to another UCLA touchdown to make it 14-0. It was the first time USC has trailed by 14 points at any moment in a game this season.

But the Trojans didn’t flinch and scored 10 unanswered points to not let the game get away early.

“I actually told the guys we are capable of being down. The team we are playing is a good team,” said USC head coach Lincoln Riley. “You can’t write the script first and for our guys to respond like that. Shows the closeness and togetherness of this team.”

It was a nail-bitter going into halftime as the Bruins held onto a 21-20 lead.

Caleb Williams and the Trojans high-powered offense came out blazing in the second half. It started with Williams’ 35-yard touchdown pass to star wide receiver Jordan Addison.

“Glad to have him back,” said a very ecstatic Williams on the play of the reining Biletnikoff  award winner. “After he scored I told him ‘welcome back’”.

Williams finished the game with over 500 yards of offense and three touchdowns. Throwing 470 yards with 178 of those yards going to Addison.

The Trojans, who went with senior Austin Jones in the place of injured running back Travis Dye, scored his second touchdown of the game in the 3rd quarter to give USC a 34-24 lead. Jones finished the game with 120 rushing yards and 4 receptions for 57 yards.

Southern Cal led 34-31 going into the 4th and though the offense played an amazing game. It was the defense that saved the day.

The Trojans defense got the game winning stop when linebacker Korey Foreman picked off UCLA’s quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson with a minute and 26 seconds remaining in the 4th.

USC’s defense caused four Thompson-Robinson turnovers ( three interceptions and one fumble) which helped the visiting team hold on for the big victory.

Linebacker Shane Lee knew it would be a challenge but understood how prepared the defense had to be for this challenge. “We just focused in on the things we know we needed to do and we can’t skip over it and that’s why we came out with the win today.” said Lee.

USC now switches its focus over to another rival, Notre Dame, who visits the Coliseum next week. It’s another must win game if the Trojans hope to secure a College Football Playoff spot.

Huskies avoid the Colorado trap

Seattle, WA – Huskies’ Wayne Taulapapa put his stamp on the game early and fast with a few amazing runs with two touchdowns. He rushed for a team high 107 yards on 11 carries.

Taulapapa being a transfer from University of Virginia played with a lot oh is mind and a burst of emotion flowed after reaching the endzone.

“I’ve just been leaning on the support system I have here,” Taulapapa said. “I have great brothers and great father figures here in my coaches and I try to lean on them every day.”

No. 17 Washington Huskies football defeated Colorado Buffalos by a final score of 54-7 on Saturday at Husky Stadium. The balance attack was just what they needed to show the college football world the Huskies are back.

Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr controlled the field allowing for his team to have 575 yards total yards. Penix also threw for 229 yards and a touchdown before allowing back up Dylan Morris so late playing time.

Colorado did have a bright spot with receiver Montana Lemonious-Craig catching a 69-yard touchdown catch for the Buffaloes only points.

J.T. Shrout did throw for 120 yards in the air for the Buffaloes but Washington defense was too much. The offense was only able to get 10 first downs all game and turned over the ball on downs four times coming up short.

The 9-2 Huskies will look to have a good week of practice to face cross town foe the 7-4 bowl eligible Washington State Cougars Saturday night at 7:30pm kickoff. The 1-10 Buffaloes will host the No 14 Utah Utes who are looking for a shot in the PAC-12 Championship with USC on December 2 in Las Vegas at Alliant Stadium.

“We don’t have that trophy in our trophy case right now,” Washington head coach DeBoer said of the Apple Cup. “I know it means a lot … (but) we’re playing for a lot of stuff. It’s not just that trophy.”

Utah St with the win goes bowling

Logan, UT – The Aggies jump into bowl contention with a 35-31 victory of conference foe San Jose State Spartans. Utah St running back Calvin Tyler Jr covered every inch of the field rushing for 125 yards with 3 touchdowns on 30 carries.

“Calvin got it in the end zone when we had to tonight,” Utah State head coach Blake Anderson said. “That last touchdown was huge.”

Photo by Jason Strother / fi360 News

Tyler Jr being the Aggies bright spots helped keep the ball away from the Spartans potent offense. They were able to control the time of possession with 33:41 and 27 more plays for a total 85 offensive plays.

A great offense is always is good, quarterback Cooper Legas threw for 244 yards and a touchdown with 2 interceptions. Brian Cobbs was his top target catching 10 passes for 122 yards. Justin McGriff caught the lone touchdown and total 42 yards.

Opportunities come and Aggies Jaden Smith took a 56-yard punt block for a touchdown and ran past San Jose punter Alex Weir with easy. All three phases in the game are important for team unity.

San Jose State struck the scoreboard first with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Cooks. Cooks was the leading receiver with 7 catches for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns. He followed up his first score with a 29-yard and 9-yard touchdown catches.

The Aggies are bowl bound again after last year making the first Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl in 2021.

“Super proud,” Utah State head coach Blake Anderson said. “Excited to be bowl eligible. I know we have talked a lot about that the last few weeks and just how much it means to this group.”

Photo by Jason Strother / fi360 News

Spartans quarterback Chevan Cordeiro threw for 257 yards and 4 touchdowns but it was enough even though he made smart decisions with the football. They just needed the running game to be a bigger part to wear down the Aggies.

The Aggies kept pressure on the pocket led by Hale Motu’apuaka team with 2 sacks.

Now San Jose State Spartans will host Hawaii at 12:30pm for end of the season. The Utah St Aggies will travel to Bosie to play on TV against Boise State Broncos at 9am Friday November 25.

“Oh yeah definitely (Change in Culture), said Martinez “Everyone ready to make a play when our number is called.”

In the second quarter the Sun Devils had a lapse in coverage in the secondary that allowed freshman tight end Jack Velling (84) to slip up the field for a walk-in touchdown reception and 14-7 lead with 1:06 left in the half. Velling caught 3 passes for 74 yards to lead the Beavers.

Xazavian Valladay (1) tried to keep his team close by rushing for 109 yards on 13 carries with the Sun Devils only touchdown. Quarterback Trenton Bourguet (16) went 20/32 passes for only 122 yards hitting 7 different targets.

“We played very disappointing in all phases of the game,” said interim head coach Shaun Aguano. “Our kids still played, and they played hard. It was disappointing on all side.”

Now the Beavers winning their 8 game of the season field general Ben Gulbranson (17) has been a great game manager doing just enough to capture a victory. He threw for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown to account for two scores. Gulbranson hit 15 of first 17 passes and finished the game with 188 yards passing going 15/21.

Kraken survive another late blown lead, beating Rangers for first home overtime win

Seattle, WA – With a Vincent Trocheck goal deep into the final frame, the New York Rangers were on the verge of handing the Seattle Kraken a second consecutive loss due to a blown lead. Thanks to practicing their three on three the past few days, the Kraken were better equipped than their past game, a loss to Winnipeg after a blown lead in regulation. That practice paid off, as the Kraken were patient and smart with the puck, eventually finding a rebound to punch home past Vezina-winning Igor Shesterkin to secure their first overtime win at home in franchise history. The win displays Seattle’s resiliency and ability to adjust, characteristics that will serve them well all season long.

For most of this contest, both goaltenders were on full display. Vezina-trophy winner Igor Shesterkin of the Rangers made incredible saves time and time again as if that was the standard for him, rejecting multiple Kraken attempts that may normally go in. In the other net, Seattle’s Martin Jones continued his rock-solid form, practically matching Shesterkin save for save. A highlight of Jones was on a breakaway, as Kaapo Kakko took a turnover to point blank range, and it took the toe of Jones’ skate to block the puck and a potential Rangers lead. Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol reflected on the goaltenders in the game.

“Both goaltenders were good. The second period, we had an excellent twenty minutes, generated a lot of opportunities, but that’s what Igor does. He’s a great goaltender, he’s that for a reason, but ya know what? Our guy was pretty damn good tonight as well, and really timely,” Hakstol stated.

The star of the night was an unlikely one, as defensemen Justin Schultz came up big throughout the course of the game and scored the game winner in overtime. A veteran free agent signing that has had an inconsistent start to the season, Schultz helped provide unlikely offense against one of the best goalies in the NHL. His first goal of the night came halfway through the third period, as a shot from nearly center ice deflected off of a Rangers skater and just past Shesterkin to give Seattle the lead. His second of the night and the goal that gave the Kraken a win came on a deflected shot by Jordan Eberle that whizzed right to Schultz, who had to simply whack it past Shesterkin to win. Schultz reflected on the win, postgame.

“Shesterkin made some big saves on us, he’s one of the best in the league. We find a way to get a few by him tonight. I wasn’t trying to score on the first one, just trying to get it to the net. I think we got a tip on it, great to see it go in… on the winner, Ebs did a great job driving them wide, and I hoped they would call it to me. Then, I just found a way to get in there,” Schultz reflected.

While numerically this wasn’t a huge, dominating win by Seattle, and the team had to avoid blowing the lead for a second straight game, this is a measuring-stick type win for the Kraken. The Rangers are a talented team from top to bottom, with arguably the best netminder in the world between the pipes. New York, having reached the Eastern Conference Final last season, may still be searching for their form this season, but this sort of win may get the Seattle ship back on course following a few tight losses. The ability to adjust is necessary for this team to grow, and that was shown with the play in overtime.

Next up, the Kraken will near the end of their six game homestand as they welcome the Los Angeles Kings to down for a Saturday, November 19th matchup. The fifth game of six in this stretch at home, Seattle will play host to the team that sits right above them in the Pacific Division standings. A win following their 7PM PST puck drop on Saturday would push the Kraken back into second place in the division.

Kraken lose composure late in overtime loss to Jets

Period 3

Seattle, WA – For the second straight game, the Seattle Kraken would lose a frustrating, close contest. While the Kraken generated more dangerous opportunities and looked more like their better selves through most of the game, they still could not click on all cylinders. Seattle had this game in hand for most of the time on the clock, but everything changed when an ill-timed roughing call on Carson Soucy led to a game-tying goal for Winnipeg. The Kraken will get a few days of practice for their next matchup, and they will need it if they want to get back into the win column.

The special teams play for Seattle has been a talking point this season, from the penalty kill struggling early to going 18 times without being scored on to some power play success until recently. The two specialty units flipped their recent form, as the power play finally broke through and the penalty kill saw their streak broken. The power play found the back of the net on a five on three situation, as Vince Dunn’s deflected shot was put home by Jordan Eberle net front. The penalty kill faced seven power plays, and even though they denied five of them, the Jets scored their first two goals with the man advantage. Alternate captain Jordan Eberle reflected on the special teams, postgame.

“We got a good start with the goal, I gotta go back and look, my mind is somewhere else right now, but I thought we created some good opportunities. Maybe, probably not enough. That’s what we have to

find when things aren’t going well, bang it inside and try to find a greasy one,” Eberle reflected.

The Kraken looked more dangerous tonight than they did back against the Minnesota Wild a few days ago but failed to find that final touch or lucky bounce to sound their goal horn more than they did. Brandon Tanev hit the crossbar of the goal before he scored for real in the third period. Jared McCann saw several near misses in the second period. While there were some bright spots, we weren’t able to see enough of the Kraken attack because of all the penalties the team had to serve. Seattle head coach Dave Hakstol had something to say about the that last issue, postgame.

“We didn’t see much of it, we had nearly 20 minutes in specialty teams tonight. We really didn’t get into any flow throughout the hockey game… We moved wingers on all three lines, Oliver Bjorkstrand had a really good fit. Once things go in for him, things will start going his way a little bit more. He’s got one goal now, but that next one is hard to come by,” Hakstol stated.

After a few days of practice, the Kraken will battle the New York Rangers on November 17th at Climate Pledge Arena. Seattle will look to end their current losing streak as they take on a Rangers team that is coming off of an appearance in the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals, as puck drop is at 7PM PST. The night is also Hockey Fights Cancer night for Seattle.

SDSU Keeps Conference Championship Hopes Alive

SAN DIEGO, CA – The San Diego State Aztecs defeated the San Jose State Spartans 43-27 in a critical matchup that had a large impact on the Mountain West-West standings. The loser of this game would essentially be eliminated from conference championship contention.

Coming into this game the Spartans were in second place in their side of the conference with a 4-1 record, and the only loss being to Fresno State who is currently sitting in first at 4-1. The Aztecs were in third after suffering a heartbreaking loss to Fresno St. which gave them two losses in conference play.

Photo by Rashad Griffin / fi360 News

The game started off seeming as if San Diego State would be eliminated from contention as they were in a fourteen point hole in the first quarter. On their first possession, Chevan Cordeiro marched them down the field as he hooked up with Elijah Cooks who made an acrobatic one handed catch over his back shoulder to pick up a crucial first down.

They would score on that drive, force a turnover, and score another touchdown looking as if they were going to run away with this game. The tables would turn on the ensuing kickoff where Jordan Byrd ignited life into this team by returning it 95 yards for a touchdown.

Photo by Rashad Griffin / fi360 News

San Diego State’s offense would take over the rest of the first half behind the arm of Jalen Mayden. He threw two touchdowns in the second quarter with one of them being a 66 yard pass to Tyrell Shavers.

The Aztecs went into halftime with 24 unanswered points, and that would grow larger since they received the ball to start the third. Jalen Mayden and Jesse Matthews connected on two more touchdowns in this quarter before the Spartans were able to get on the board.

San Jose State tried to pull a comeback similar to the one that Fresno State was able to complete against this same Aztec team. However, this time San Diego State was able to hold off the Spartans who scored two touchdowns late in the game.

Photo by Rashad Griffin / fi360 News

This victory for the Aztecs kept their goal alive of competing in the Mountain West championship game. They would need some help from other teams beating Fresno State who is sitting comfortably in the drivers spot. The Spartans on the other hand fall to third on their side of the bracket with head to head losses to Fresno and San Diego State.

A Bruin Loss Hurts…But All Is Not Lost…

Pasadena, CA – For any of you who thought that UCLA had a chance to make the College Football Playoff…

…there’s a reason why the committee ranked them 12th before this weekend.

Their only impressive win came against Utah. Had UCLA beaten Oregon, the conversation would have been much stronger. Now, the worry goes to the entire Pac-12 since Oregon lost to Washington yesterday. This virtually takes away any chance for any Pac-12 team to have a chance to be one of the top four, and that includes USC.

De Laura’s dives for a touchdown. Photo by fi360 News

Saturday set up a prime opportunity for November 19 to be the Pac-12 semifinals. UCLA and USC square off at 5PM. Oregon and Utah kicks off at 7:30PM. More on that later.

So now lets talk about UCLA.

The Bruins were skipping down the Rose Bowl tunnel getting ready to take on Arizona. Why were they all smiles? An Oregon loss gave way for the Bruins to be the top team in the Pac-12 and hold their destiny. The Wildcats entered with every loss by double digits. They hadn’t won at the Rose Bowl since 2010. They have been practically irrelevant since they had a legit chance to make the Rose Bowl back in 1998, where the Bruins ruined that chance by losing to Miami in the final week of the season, this giving UCLA the Rose Bowl bid instead. Ironically, that was also the last time the Bruins made the Rose Bowl.

Bobo gets tackled

We can talk about betting lines and stats on paper, but the Wildcats ignored just about everything that went against them. They went up quickly 14-0 when Jayden De Laura settled in quite nicely. UCLA had to play catchup practically the rest of the way and eventually took a lead late in the fourth when Zack Charbonnet had to take matters into his own hands rushing for most of the yards they needed to go up 28-24. De Laura though took command on a 48 yard pass after the kickoff to Dorian Singer, eventually leading the Wildcats back into the endzone to lead 31-28. While Arizona kicked another field goal to give them the 6 point cushion, the Bruins had one final chance to save their hopes of earning the top spot in the Pac-12. Thompson Robinson’s late drive fell short on the last play looking for Jake Bobo and striking through his hands.

As a whole, the Bruins could not make any big stops. De Laura’s 22-for-28 night and over 300 yards passing wreaked havoc. UCLA’s offensive line could not hold, giving the Wildcats 7 tackles for losses, most of which occurred in the second half. A good chunk of those came in the second half taking Thompson Robinson down twice. Thompson-Robinson’s night was average at best, throwing for just 1 touchdown and for 245 yards. His effort ruined the rest of the offensive performance that was sparked from a great running game by Charbonnet’s 181 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Thompson Robinson only managed 21 yards on the ground.

UCLA at the end of the day looked off. They looked like they played a trap game. They looked like they were waiting for USC. Instead, just like their chances of making the College Football Playoff were around slim (needing wins and massive help), the same can now go for being one of the top 2 teams in the Pac-12. A Bruins win Saturday means they can snag one of the top 2 spots in the conference by way of tiebreaker over the Trojans and Utes. Their Pac-12 season concludes with Cal the week after. A Bruin loss the next two games means even the Holiday Bowl could get taken away.

UCLA Defense

UCLA’s season now hangs in the balance Saturday night.

“Washington puts an end to Oregon’s College Football Playoff hopes with late comeback victory”

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

EUGENE, OR – As you might expect with two Pac-12 rivals who are both ranked in the top 25, emotions were high in Autzen stadium when the No. 6 Oregon Ducks hosted the No. 25 Washington Huskies. The Huskies had only won 2 out of their last 17 matchups against the Ducks prior to Saturday’s meeting, but the number 1 ranked Husky pass offense was able to dissect Oregon’s 117th-ranked pass defense, upsetting the Ducks 37-34 on their own field.

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

The two went back and forth all night, most notably in the third quarter when Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. connected with wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk for a 76-yard touchdown, reclaiming the lead at 27-24. Oregon quarterback Bo Nix immediately answered with a touchdown of his own the following drive when he found wide receiver Troy Franklin for a 67-yard touchdown, giving the lead back to the Ducks at 31-27.

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

Bo Nix, who lately has been included in the Heisman contention conversation, was electric until an injury late in the fourth quarter caused the Oregon offense to sputter in a back-and-forth game. Nix threw for 280 yards and 2 touchdowns and led the Ducks in rushing yards with another 143 on the ground.

Because of Nix’s injury, the Ducks looked to redshirt freshman Ty Thompson in a tie game with only 3:07 seconds left in the 4th quarter, but without Nix the Oregon offense was unable to move the ball. The Ducks had been dominating Washington on the ground all night, but attempted four straight rushes for only 8 yards, failing to convert on 4th down when Noah Wittington slipped immediately after the handoff.

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

Oregon Head Coach Dan Lanning received criticism for his decision to attempt a 4th down conversion instead of punting, especially without putting Nix back in the game who could be seen on the sidelines saying he was ready to go back in. When asked about the situation Lanning stated, “you can say in retrospect ‘we should punt there, have a chance,’ but you also feel like hey you get that first, you probably have a chance to go win the game.”

Washington quarterback Penix Jr. Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

Oregon fans let dreams of the College Football Playoffs creep back into their minds as the Ducks worked their way through conference play, but after an extremely disappointing loss need to remember this is only Dan Lanning’s first year as a head coach. Lanning owned the loss, stating “This game 100% falls on me”, but there were always going to be growing pains and learnings that would come from this season. The future of the Oregon Football program looks brighter than ever and is in great hands with Dan Lanning leading the way.

The Trojans win big, prepare for showdown with UCLA

Photo by Brandon Bashir / fi360 News

Los Angeles, CA – Though all eyes are on next week’s matchup against their crosstown rival, UCLA. The Trojans didn’t want to slip up at all as they make a push for a possible CFP slot.

USC looked to come out and take care of business tonight and did exactly that with a huge 55-17 win over the University of Colorado.

The Trojans got the win under the Friday Night lights on Veterans Day performing well on both offense and defense.

Photo by Brandon Bashir / fi360 News

It didn’t always look pretty but Heisman hopeful quarterback Caleb Williams added to his resume with another 4+ touchdown game. Williams threw for 268 passing yards with three touchdowns and ran for two more scores as well. Backup quarterback Miller Moss even got some action throwing his first touchdown of the year.

It wasn’t all good news for the Trojans’ offense. USC took a big hit at the end of the first half when star running back Travis Dye was carted off the field with a lower leg injury. The Trojans will be looking to backups Austin Jones, transfer from Stanford and freshman Raleek Brown to step up in Dye’s absence.

“He’s a special player and special human. We are going to miss him on the field” said Williams who will now be without his lead back for the remainder of the year. “Its tough, it shook us all. It sucks and there is no other way to put it” said USC coach Lincoln Riley of the loss of Travis Dye.

Photo by Brandon Bashir / fi360 News

The Trojans’ defense had possibly their best game of the year. They held Colorado to only 17 points causing three turnovers including a safety in the first quarter to start the scoring for both teams. The defense pressured Colorado quarterback J.T. Shrout all night and didn’t really allow too many big plays until late.

Coach Riley was very excited about the defensive performance tonight. “Our defense played well. We affected the passer which is huge,” said Riley. “We got a couple of turnovers and I was proud of the defensive effort tonight.”

“Now we get a chance to reset. We have a little bit of a long week and we can get ready to play those guys from across town” said coach Riley with a very serious look on his face.

We all know what’s next! The Trojans are now a couple steps away from bringing home a Pac-12 championship to Los Angeles but they have to get through LA’s other team next week to do so.
