Shreveport LA –  With the Independence Bowl marking the end of the season for both teams, the Texas Tech Raiders took home the victory against the California Golden Bears, with the final score of 34-14. Their sophomore quarterback, Brehren Morton, led the way with an astonishing 256 passing yards and 3 touchdowns.

With all of his yardage into play, that did not stop the Golden Bears from getting off to a hot start. Texas Tech received the opening kickoff, which ended up a fumble with the Bears coming out with the ball. Shortly after, the Bears scored on their first play from scrimmage, making the lead 7-0 just 15 seconds into the game.

Two drives later, the Raiders tied it back up to 7-7 with a 27-yard touchdown pass from QB Brehren Morton to Coy Eakin. The teams went back and forth with both defenses, giving up a touchdown tying the score 14-14 with 12:16 left in the 1st half. After a couple of defensive stops, the Red Raiders were able to take the lead with a touchdown & field goal, making the final score 24-14 going into the half.

The Red Raiders played a great second quarter, and their head coach Joey Maguire would agree. “Yeah, I would think so. You know, Behren [Morton] can probably tell you the most, but it’s probably the healthiest he’s been since the West Virginia game. You know, during that week and I think you saw that with the zip on the ball, the touchdown to Loic Fouonji was actually, I mean, it was a laser, and that shows you that he’s getting healthy.”

Behren’s health had no effect on him in the second half as Texas Tech scored 10 more unanswered points with a 7 yard rushing touchdown from Tahj Brooks and a 37 yard field goal from Gino Garcia. The Raiders’ defense was led by the defensive MVP of the game Jacob Rodriguez shutting down the Bears, preventing them from putting any points on the board and forcing 4 fatal turnovers in the second half.

Coach Joey chimed in by saying “We talked about complimentary football and we talked

about that you know, if something crazy is going on one side of the ball then the other side of the ball is going to pick, pick it up and offense did tonight and it kind of got out of whack early on defense and so the offense had to pick us up and let us settle in and play and they really did.”

Quarterback Brehren Morton talks about winning offensive MVP and his teams sensation of winning another bowl game. “It feels really good to win another bowl game. You know, I’ve been to a bowl every year I’ve been in college, you know, but you know what we have going on right now, this university is really special. “

Photo by Jabril Douglas / fi360 News

On the other side, the Bears head coach Justin Wilcox was left with what could have been while finding solace in what they need to work on in the upcoming season. Wilcox stated “We need to take another step there. When we come back, it needs to be more competitive than it’s ever been because where we finished this year that’s not the goal. That’s not good enough. That’s why this offseason when these guys come back it’s going to be a heightened intensity there. Everything has to be because how we finished was not good enough.”

This win makes it the 3rd consecutive bowl game in which Texas Tech Raiders has come out the victor.

Gridiron Shift: Fresno St dominates New Mexico Bowl Showdown

Photo by Jason Strother / fi360 News

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – In the New Mexico Bowl, Fresno State surged to a 37-10 victory over New Mexico State, overturning expectations shaped by the teams’ recent trajectories.

New Mexico State, riding a wave of momentum, aimed to secure an 11th win – a rare feat in their program’s history. Conversely, Fresno State grappled with setbacks, including the departure of head coach Jeff Tedford due to health reasons, leaving Tim Skipper in charge for the bowl game.

Despite New Mexico State’s anticipation of exploiting Fresno State’s vulnerability against the rush, the Bulldogs showcased a dominant performance. New Mexico State, accustomed to establishing their run game, struggled early on, managing only 200 yards of total offense. Hindered by a deficit, they veered away from their preferred strategy, heavily relying on the passing game.

Quarterback Diego Pavia, not yet at full capacity, faced immense pressure, concluding the game with 58 yards and an interception on an 11-for-25 passing display. The Aggies’ sole substantial offensive drive spanned 75 yards over 14 plays for their lone touchdown in the third quarter.

With the Aggies forced into predictable passing situations, Fresno State’s defense capitalized, recording four sacks and seven tackles for loss. This defensive prowess compounded New Mexico State’s offensive struggles, contributing to their limited yardage gains.

In contrast, Fresno State’s quarterback Mikey Keene, rejuvenated from injuries, orchestrated an impressive offensive showcase. Keene completed 31 of 39 passes for 380 yards and three touchdowns, displaying precision and distributing passes to ten different receivers, several resulting in substantial gains. His seamless performance, coupled with a reliable rushing attack, propelled the Bulldogs to a decisive victory.

This triumph for Fresno State salvaged a season that initially showed promise but faltered along the way. Conversely, while New Mexico State fell short of setting historic records, the team found positives to cherish from their 2023 campaign despite the New Mexico Bowl defeat.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Ethan Garbers threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns as he replaced an injured Colin Schlee to lead UCLA to a, 35-22, LA Bowl victory over Boise State Saturday at Sofi Stadium in front of a bowl record 32,780.

The Bruins scored the first touchdown of the game when Schlee found tight end Hudson Habermehl for a five-yard touchdown pass to put UCLA up 7-6 in the first quarter.

That’s all the Bruins were able to getting going early as the offense struggled most of the first half.

The Broncos outscored UCLA 10-0 in the second quarter giving them a 16-7 lead at the half.

On the Bruins’ first drive of the second half, Schlee took off down the sideline for a huge 44 yard run but that would be his final play of the game as he was knocked out due to injury.

Garbers and the offense finished that drive with a score when the quarterback found wide receiver Kyle Ford for a five-yard touchdown pass to get the team within a score.

From there it was all UCLA as they scored 28 unanswered points to jump to a comfortable, 35-16, lead over the Mountain West Champions.

Garbers being the catalyst for the big comeback win made him an easy candidate to be named the game’s offensive MVP.

“Talking to him pregame he didn’t feel like he was 100% and couldn’t go,” coach Chip Kelly said. “(Ethan) said, I’m ready to be a backup if we have to go and so when Colin went down, I asked him, ‘Are you ready to go’ and he said he was and he played fantastic.”

The offense received a big boost from running back TJ Harden who finished the game with 20 carries for 105 yards with two second-half touchdown scores.

After allowing 16 points in the first half the UCLA defense only allowed a late fourth quarter to the Broncos.

“I think our defense actually played well in the first half we just missed a couple tackles you know, but they were where they were supposed to be the runs were fit the right way,” coach Kelly said. “We felt like if we could clean that up that we were poised to break out the second half and that’s what happened.”

With the win, the Bruins finished their third straight season with at least 8 wins which is the second time for UCLA since 1988.

Ravens OT Punt Return Devastates Rams

BALTIMORE, MD– Tylan Wallace pulled a walk-off 76-yard punt return touchdown for a 37-31 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, December 10. The gut-wrenching Overtime loss snaps the Rams three game winning streak.

The Rams (6-7) remain in a logjam of teams fighting for the final NFC playoff spots. They narrowly missed picking up a huge win on the road.

Trailing 31-28 in the final minute of this seesaw, thrilling game, Stafford guided the Rams into position to take multiple shots to the end zone, and when that failed, Lucas Havrisik made a 36-yard field goal with 7 seconds left to force OT.

In Overtime, both teams went three and out before the 24-year-old Wallace made the signature play of his career. Wallace became the fourth player in NFL history to score a touchdown on a punt return in OT. Xavier Gipson of the New York Jets also did it this season, against Buffalo.

“It just feels great to be able to make a difference in the game and help the team win,” Wallace said. “You could say a once-in-a-lifetime moment.”

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 23 of 41 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns and running back Kyren Williams had 114 yards on 25 carries. Cooper Kupp led all receivers with eight catches for 115 yards and a touchdown. Rookie Puka Nacua made five catches for 84 yards.

Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson completed 24 of 43 passes for 316 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception. Former Rams receiver and Super Bowl LVI Champion Odell Beckham Jr. made four catches for 97 yards and a touchdown for the Ravens.

Next Sunday, the Rams host the Washington Commanders in a must win.

Long Beach State upsets USC on the hardwood

Los Angeles, CA – The Big West Conference moves to 2-0 versus USC as the Long Beach State defeated the USC Trojans in overtime, 84-79 on Sunday afternoon. USC now has accumulated two home losses in their non-conference schedule, both being to Big West schools UC Irvine, and Long Beach State.

All the buzz surrounding the game was on Bronny James as the freshman made his collegiate debut after suffering a cardiac arrest scare just four months ago. He offered his appreciation to everyone for helping him make a quick recovery.

“I wanna say I’m thankful for everything..I want to give appreciation to everyone who’s helped me with this,” James said in a brief statement after the game.

The Galen Center was sold out as everyone was anticipating the debut of James. The Trojans used the electric atmosphere to jump ahead early in the first half.

Isaiah Collier and Vincent Iwuchukwu had 10 points apiece in the first half as the Trojans offense got off to the hot start.

It didn’t take long for Bronny James to find himself in the game. About eight minutes in, James checked in to a standing ovation and loud cheers.

The Beach found themselves down by as many as 17 at one point before cutting the lead to 15 at the half.

However, the start of the second half saw the Trojans fall flat. They were missing open shots and getting into foul trouble. USC head coach Andy Enfield did not mince words when it came to his team’s effort.

“We had a 15 point lead at halftime, it was disappointing to see our energy when we started the second half…they had more energy and I didn’t understand it. We had a great crowd and we played so energetic in the first half,” Enfield said.

DJ Rodman fouled out late in the second half and Kobe Johnson and Iwuchukwu had four fouls apiece.

USC had a chance to steal this one in regulation but on the last possession of the game with 3.9 seconds left, Enfield drew up a play that would’ve led to a potential Boogie Ellis shot. Ellis instead passed up on the shot and gave it to Collier whose shot was tipped and sent the game into overtime.

“I don’t know why he passed it, that wasn’t the design, it was meant for Boogie,” Enfield said about Ellis’ decision to not shoot.

Long Beach State’s Marcus Tsohonis had a big game for The Beach. The VCU transfer finished with 28 points as he made big time buckets for the Long Beach State when they needed it the most, including the game-sealing free throws at the end of overtime to push The Beach’s lead to five.

USC will have to find their adjustments quickly as they have two road trips to Alabama to take on Auburn and Alabama State and then to Oregon, where they will play Oregon and Oregon State to start their final season of Pac-12 conference play.

UCLA Bruins head coach Chip Kelly (Photo by Jevone Moore / fi360 News)

UCLA dropped three of their final four games, although the Bruins crushed Crosstown rival USC 38-20 at the Coliseum. Head Coach Chip Kelly was on the hot seat, many people believing his days in Westwood had come to an end.

However, UCLA decided to retain Kelly for next season. It will be his seventh year leading the Bruins as Defensive Coordinator D’Anton Lynn is departing to take the same position at  USC.

Boise State (8-5) had a great second half of the season. Ending the season on a four-game win streak — including a 44-20 thumping of UNLV in the Mountain West Championship Game.

If the Bruins are to win this contest, it’ll have to slow down the Broncos’ potent rushing attack featuring quarterback Taylen Green, thumper George Holani, and stud running back Ashton Jeanty.
