–USC UNVEILS PROPOSED PRELIMINARY PLANS TO RENOVATE COLISEUM

LOS ANGELES—The University of Southern California, as part of its long-term lease agreement, unveiled its proposed preliminary plans to renovate and restore the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum during a meeting today (Oct. 29) with the Coliseum Commission.

If approved by the Commission, a full project launch will be announced in the spring of 2016.  Construction would begin after the 2017 USC football season and completed for the 2019 football home opener, without impact to the 2018 season.

The estimated $270-million renovation will be privately funded by USC and USC will work to preserve the historic nature of the Coliseum.  The planned renovation would far exceed USC’s obligations under its lease agreement to invest $100 million in improvements by 2054, including $70 million over the next decade.

“The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is a treasure not just for Los Angeles but for the state of California, and its renovation is long overdue,” said USC President C.L. Max Nikias. “Our Board of Trustees has enthusiastically endorsed our plans and we are pleased to now present them to the Coliseum Commission.  We believe these renovations will strengthen the Coliseum’s reputation as one of the world’s great venues, and also will enhance our world-class athletic programs that utilize the Coliseum.”

Said USC athletic director Pat Haden:  “We are committed to providing our players, coaches and fans with one of the best facilities in the nation.  This needed renovation to a stadium built in 1923 will ensure that the game-day experience gives all fans options to enjoy the stadium’s new amenities while recognizing the loyalty of our long-time fans.  It also will provide our football team with a first-class facility and a home field advantage.”

The planned renovations include:

–Replacing every seat in the stadium and installing handrails throughout the stadium.

–Adding aisles, widening seats and increasing leg room in many sections.

–Building a new structure on the south side of the stadium that will include suites, loge boxes, club seats, a new concourse, and a new

press box.

–Restoring the iconic peristyle to more closely resemble the stadium’s original design.

–Updating Wi-Fi technology throughout the venue.

–Improving audio and video, including two new large screens at the east end of the stadium.

–Adding new concession stands, and improving existing stands.

–Upgrading entry concourses.

–Installing new field and stadium lighting.

–Replacing the electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems to meet current standards.

The renovation will be funded entirely by USC Athletics from capital gifts, sponsorship revenue, non-USC events at the Coliseum and donor naming opportunities.  It will not require any student fees or general university, local, state or federal funds.

The improvements to the stadium seating and aisles will reduce seating capacity from 93,607 to approximately 77,500.  Student and band seats will not be relocated and USC will work to upgrade the student experience.

USC Athletics is committed to providing affordable seating options to all Trojan fans.  Approximately two thirds of the seating in the renovated Coliseum will not require any capital donation.  It is anticipated that the remaining inventory will be designated for supporters who make a one-time capital gift and are members of the Trojan Athletic Fund.

Those interested in receiving renovation updates, including renderings, seating options and amenities, can visit www.coliseumrenovation.com to register to become a “Coliseum Renovation Insider.”

Trojan Athletic Fund members and season ticket holders need not register, as they will be the first to receive project updates.  They also will have priority to select seating, commensurate with membership level and years of support.

“We are committed to completing this process in the most fan-friendly manner possible, recognizing the loyalty of our Trojan Athletic Fund members and long-time season ticket holders and providing a wide variety of seating options,” said Haden.

In the summer of 2013, USC received approval from the Coliseum Commission and the Board of Directors of the California Science Center to allow the transaction between the university and the state of California for USC to begin operating and renovating the Coliseum.

USC has been a tenant in the Coliseum since the historic stadium opened in 1923.  The Coliseum last had substantial renovations 20 years ago, when $93 million was spent to repair damages sustained during Southern California’s 1994 earthquake and then another $6 million was spent to construct a new press box in 1995.  Prior to that, the Coliseum underwent $15 million in renovations in 1993 when the stadium’s floor was lowered, new rows of seats were added down low and locker rooms and public restrooms were upgraded.

In its history, the Coliseum has hosted two Olympics, two Super Bowls, a World Series, a Papal Mass and visits by three U.S. Presidents.  Besides USC football, the stadium has served at one time as the home to UCLA football, the pro football franchises of the Rams, Dons, Chargers, Raiders, Express and Xtreme, and baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers.  It also has been the site of various other events, including concerts and international soccer.

The Coliseum currently is participating in a “zero waste initiative” in conjunction with USC’s Office of Sustainability and the Green Sports Alliance.

Gardena, Ca – It was time to hold off a very hungry Alemany coming off 3 tough losses for the first time in coach Dean Herrington career. Serra did just that with a dominating 41-34 victory to capture the Mission League title outright for back to back years.  The star of the night Khalil Tate who accounted for 500 of Serra 594 total offense yards.

Tonight’s victory was Serra head coach Scott Altenberg 161 career win. This week Altenberg message was clear “Character”, wanting his team not to lose focus and be smart. It looks like the team responded and let its words be spoken by their play.

This was a game of two different half’s, which started out as 27-27 shoot out to began the game. Alemany Sophomore quarterback Brevin White had an efficient first half completing 10/14 passes.   While Serra explode on the scoreboard first with 33 yards TD, followed by quick strike Alemany responds with 51 yards catch by Jarrin Pierce. With score tied already 7-7 and there was still 10:17 on clock in first half. Alemany kicks off to Serra and steals the onside kick and goes on short field for a score. On the next play White connects with Johnny Edwards and 14-7 lead still in first quarter and 9:20 left.

The Cavaliers showed poise all night not getting to low or high with the game swinging back and forth. There was plenty of fireworks and hard hits, great grabs, and speed on speed.  One Tate big targets was Kobe Smith who had 3 catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns, one being an exciting 4th & 13 touchdown grabs that seem to set the tone of the game.

After the teams emerged from the locker room both teams defense stepped up in second half. Serra man child defensive end Oluwole Betiku who finished with 5 sacks for the game. They started to move him around more to avoid the double teams that he was facing in first half. Quarterback Tate was slowed down as much as speed bump on a side street still managed to find few more creases in the Alemany defense. The Cavaliers were all smiles knowing they had taking Alemany best shot and came away victorious.

Serra now moves its record to 8-1 on the season and will finish the season on the road traveling next week to Chaminade before CIFSS playoffs seedlings meeting. Then Alemany moves to 6-3 and will host Norte Dame with an outside chance to gain an at-large bid for the playoffs if they can win.

Narbonne Blast Past Banning

Quarterback Roman Ale threw for 2 touchdowns and added one on the ground as Narbonne(7-2, 4,0) routed Banning 60-7, in a Marine League bout Friday night at Narbonne High.

The senior signal caller had touchdown throws of 50 and 24-yards and a touchdown run of 46-yards to send Narbonne leading with a comfortable 33-7 at halftime.

“I told my kids last week before the Carson game that our playoffs had begun,” said Narbonne coach Manual Douglas. “We have to come out strong from the very beginning and close games out. A league loss wouldn’t do us any good heading into playoffs.”

Ale passed for 154 yards on 13 of 15 before taking the remainder of the game off after the half. Arizona bound Sean Riley had 94-yards rushing, majority coming on 54-yard scamper that went for a Narbonne touchdown.

The Gauchos blew open the game in the first quarter after Narbonne’s Boe Tufele picked of Pilot quarterback Myles Porter on the 14-yard line and ran it back to the house to give Narbonne a 21-0

Narbonne added one more touchdown return for a touchdown to open up the second half when Raymond Scott took Banning pass for a 65-yard score and 40-7 lead.

Banning’s lone score of the evening came on 15-yard catch by Fernando Corona on its last possession of the first half.

After its milestone victory in the final seconds over San Pedro 3 weeks ago, The Pilots have lost two out of its last three games.

Banning(6-3, 2-2) coach John Aponte says his team came in ready and prepared but had a couple mental breakdowns contributed to the lopsided outcome.

“We knew this game was going to be tough, but my kids didn’t back down and that’s why I’m proud of them. We had had plays that were open for us but could execute when it came down to it.”

Both teams will conclude league play next Friday night as Banning travels to Gardena and Narbonne visits San Pedro.

GEORGIA TECH IS AUTONATION NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK
Yellow Jackets stun FSU with final play heroics

DALLAS (FWAA) – What started as a game-saving play from its special teams turned into a game-winning play for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as Lance Austin returned a blocked field goal 78 yards for a touchdown on the final play of a 22-16 win over No. 9 Florida State. The win snapped FSU’s 28-game win streak in Atlantic Coast Conference games, and earned the Yellow Jackets the AutoNation National Team of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Oct. 24.

Tied at 16-16, FSU lined up for a 56-yard field goal attempt with eight seconds left. But Georgia Tech lineman Patrick Gamble got a hand on the ball and blocked the kick, sending the loose ball into the Georgia Tech secondary. After an initial hesitation, Austin picked it up before it rolled dead and raced 78 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown as time expired. Gamble’s block was Georgia Tech’s third this season and 14th blocked kick since 2013. The Yellow Jackets have blocked the most kicks in the nation since the 2013 season.

The win was Georgia Tech’s (3-5) first in ACC play this season and also snapped a five-game losing streak following a 2-0 start.

“I was just hoping he was going to kick it low because it was so long a kick,” Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson said. “It was crazy because we blocked it and I see it run across the line. I go from yelling ‘Get away from it’ to ‘Run, run, run.’ What a great play by Lance (Austin) to pick it up. He got some key blocks and he made a couple guys miss. I don’t care if it was the kicker, he still made them miss. We were due. It was our turn. We’ve seen so many of these close ones like this go the other way, it’s good to finally be on the right end of one for a change.”

The Yellow Jackets’ defense also had one its best games, stealing a key interception in the fourth quarter – FSU’s first offensive turnover of the season – when Tech safety Jamal Golden picked off a tipped pass in the Georgia Tech end zone.

Other AutoNation National Team of the Week nominees for the weekend of Oct. 24 included:

Clemson (7-0): The Tigers tied the school record for victory margin in an ACC game with a 58-0 drubbing of Miami at Sun Life Stadium, also handing the Hurricanes their most lopsided loss ever. Clemson racked up a season-high 567 total yards, 416 of it on the ground that marked its best rushing effort since 2000. Quarterback Deshaun Watson accounted for 241 total yards before leaving in the third quarter with a 45-0 lead.

USC (4-3): The Trojans gave interim coach Clay Helton a win in his debut game at the Los Angeles Coliseum, and knocked No. 3 Utah from the unbeaten ranks, 42-24. Cameron Smith, a freshman linebacker, had three interceptions and returned one for a touchdown. Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster paced the offense with eight catches for 143 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown.

As part of AutoNation’s history of charitable involvement, AutoNation will donate $1,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in the Georgia Tech’s name. The aptly named AutoNation Cure Bowl also serves as a fund raiser for the BCRF, CharityWatch’s only A+ rated breast cancer organization in the country.

“We want to celebrate the very best of college football, while also helping to raise awareness for the importance of finding a cure for cancer,” says AutoNation CMO Marc Cannon. “This season-long partnership with the FWAA, leading up to the AutoNation Cure Bowl, puts a spotlight on a cause that we’re determined to tackle.”

“In our 75th season of existence, this a marvelous platform to get our players and the team of the week series excellent exposure as well as helping AutoNation in its effort to fight cancer and contribute to the educational funds of deserving student-athletes,” said FWAA 2015 President Lee Barfknecht of the Omaha World-Herald. “It is very exciting to be able to help our organization as well as others in this splendid effort.”

San Diego, Ca – The NFL scheduled an extra home game for the Oakland Raiders in San Diego. Wait Qualcomm is still home stadium for now of San Diego Chargers. By know most folks have heard that the Chargers have started step one in a possible move back to Los Angeles. Was today a glimpse into the future of how it would be if they shared a home field with each other in Carson or Inglewood. As for now we will have to sit and wait, but Chargers fans would only have to deal with this once a year.

The Chargers didn’t have an answer for the Raiders today who destroyed them 37-29. After the Raiders took their foot off the gas, Phillip Rivers managed to put up 23 fourth quarter points to make fantasy football fans happy. Rivers threw 58 pass in this game of catch up for 336 yards and 3 touchdowns. They had to try to rely on his arm today with running back Melvin Gordon slated as possible for today, due to a sore ankle. The running game was slowed to a crawl, the committee of three failed to reach 100 yard barrier.

Both teams will take away some knowledge today from the game. The Raiders flight home will be fun and they will say to themselves we need to play mistake free football every week. The Chargers will take this hard loss and move onto next week. Wide receiver Keenan Allen had a good perspective on the game, “We’ve got to learn from it first on all. It’s still a learning process.”

Amari Cooper was a great target for Derek Carr, who found him for 6 catches and 133 yards. The big play was Cooper 52 yards catch and run leaving Chargers falling by the waist side to end second quarter with 30-3 lead. Chargers fans had to wonder why they took defensive back Jason Verrett off of Cooper who held him in check during first part of game before switching up and letting him shine.

Derek Carr had a solid game competing 77% of his 31 attempts with 3 touchdowns. The ground game managed 130 yards for the Raiders which was a great balance. Raiders safety Charles Woodson was pleased with his team overall performance, “It was working. It started early with the defense getting the turnover, with Malcolm Smith getting the pick.”

The AFC West picture is shaping up to be a race for second place because the Denver Broncos are 6-0 (4-0) with a 3 game lead on second place Oakland. Next Sunday Oakland will face the New York Jets and look to continue its mistake free football. Meanwhile the Chargers will go east for a match up against Baltimore Ravens and look to find that third win of the season.

SAN FRANCISCO – Quarterback Luke Falk of WASHINGTON STATE, linebacker Cameron Smith of USC and place kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn of UCLA have been named offensive, defensive and special teams Pac-12 Players of the Week in football.

Falk, a redshirt sophomore quarterback from Logan, Utah, threw for a season-high 514 yards, completing 47-of-62 passes with five touchdowns and no interceptions in Washington State’s 45-42 victory over Arizona in Tucson. When Arizona cut the lead to 38-35 with 8:01 to play, Falk engineered an 11-play, 76-yard drive that lasted 5:58, culminating with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Marks, one of four on the day for Marks. On the drive Falk was 6-for-6 for 63 yards, added 17 yards rushing and connected with five different receivers. Following his performance, Falk was named the Walter Camp National FBS Player of the Week, the first Cougar to earn the honor since 2004. It was Falk’s third-straight game with five or more touchdown passes, pushing WSU to its best start since 2003 and marked the most passing yards ever against Arizona. Falk garnered his second Conference weekly honor of the season, also doing so on Sept. 14.

Smith, a freshman linebacker from Roseville, Calif., tallied three interceptions against then-undefeated No. 3 Utah, including a 54-yard return for a touchdown that broke the game open before halftime. His three interceptions were the most by a Trojan in a single game since Jason Oliver had three against Penn State in 1991. Smith also totaled a team-best nine tackles, had 122 return yards on his interceptions including one from 41 yards to set up for USC’s game-tying touchdown in the second quarter. He currently leads USC in tackles with 62, which ranks second nationally among all true freshmen.

Fairbairn, a senior place kicker from Kailua, Hawai’i, scored 16 points in the Bruins’ 40-24 win over California. Fairbairn converted on all four of his field goal attempts including a school record 60-yard kick at the end of the first half. His kick is the longest in the FBS this season and the longest field goal in a Conference contest. Fairbairn has made 13 of his 14 field goal attempts this season, and seven of his eight kickoffs went for touchbacks and the lone return was for 14 yards.

Los Angeles, Ca – USC peaks at the right time, taking down the #3 team in Country. Today’s victory will be a great cap to parents/ family weekend on campus. USC rolls on the Utes 42-24 in a surprising victory.

Film study on Monday for the Trojans will be extra special for Linebacker Cameron Smith who had a record 3 game interceptions and 1 touchdown. Utah’s quarterback Travis Wilson who went 24/36, 254 yards 2 touchdowns (3 if count Smith’s). Smith was just playing a great game and kept finding the passing lanes to help USC win the turnover battle 4-0.

Interim head coach Clay Helton elevated from offensive coordinator with the dismissal of Steve Sarkisian. This was his second game at the helm this season, but first time in front of the home crowd. Like playing the #3 team in the country wasn’t enough pressure already, the last seven USC coaches won their debuts in the Coliseum. Now we can make it eight after today’s win. The coaching staff was all smiles after the game coach Tee Martin said, “It was great to see our guys execute and play mistake free football.”

The game started off slow with USC first play from the line of scrimmage was a Utah sack and you could hear the fans grown.  Ronald Jones came in game to move the chains with a student body right for a first down for 19 yards. Then running Back Justin Davis caps off the opening series drive with a 9 yard touchdown run on a 9 play drive. The Trojans took an earlier 7-0 lead with 7:59 in 1st quarter.

Utah responded to the first shot from USC with a nice play action pass that lead to 30 yard touchdown catch to Britain Covey. Devontae Booker made his presence know by have some big runs and great blitz pick up recognition. After that Booker was not much of factor for one of the Pac-12 leading rushers, finishing game with only 62 yards.  The defense did its part next with another sack on Cody Kessler, that lead to short field. The Utes had 40 yard return to start their next drive on 3 yard line. One play later the Utes were up 14-7 and it was still 1st quarter.

After the 1st quarter the Trojans defense woke up, Cameron Smith picked off Wilson in 2nd quarter at 10:30 and returned it 41 yards to 4 yard line. Then the Trojans caught a break with the pick and barely capitalized with a 1 yards touchdown run by fullback Soma Vainuku to tie game 14-14.

Guess who picked another one out of sky linebacker C. Smith for his interception in game that resulted into a pick 6 that put the Trojans up 28-17 to go in on top at the half. This interception was on 4th & 2 yards to go was a turning point in this game that really swung the momentum to USC. Since USC deferred after winning the coin toss, this meant they would get ball back coming out locker room.

The game in the second half never really looked to be in danger with USC scoring one touchdown in both the 3rd & 4th quarter as extra insurance on the victory. The Pac-12 south division just got a little more interesting for next few games down the stretch.

USC will travel up to Cal on October 31st for their next game at 12:30pm. Utah will host Oregon State at 5:00pm and look to get back on track.
