Logan, UT – The Aggies jump into bowl contention with a 35-31 victory of conference foe San Jose State Spartans. Utah St running back Calvin Tyler Jr covered every inch of the field rushing for 125 yards with 3 touchdowns on 30 carries.
“Calvin got it in the end zone when we had to tonight,” Utah State head coach Blake Anderson said. “That last touchdown was huge.”
Tyler Jr being the Aggies bright spots helped keep the ball away from the Spartans potent offense. They were able to control the time of possession with 33:41 and 27 more plays for a total 85 offensive plays.
A great offense is always is good, quarterback Cooper Legas threw for 244 yards and a touchdown with 2 interceptions. Brian Cobbs was his top target catching 10 passes for 122 yards. Justin McGriff caught the lone touchdown and total 42 yards.
Opportunities come and Aggies Jaden Smith took a 56-yard punt block for a touchdown and ran past San Jose punter Alex Weir with easy. All three phases in the game are important for team unity.
San Jose State struck the scoreboard first with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Cooks. Cooks was the leading receiver with 7 catches for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns. He followed up his first score with a 29-yard and 9-yard touchdown catches.
The Aggies are bowl bound again after last year making the first Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl in 2021.
“Super proud,” Utah State head coach Blake Anderson said. “Excited to be bowl eligible. I know we have talked a lot about that the last few weeks and just how much it means to this group.”
Spartans quarterback Chevan Cordeiro threw for 257 yards and 4 touchdowns but it was enough even though he made smart decisions with the football. They just needed the running game to be a bigger part to wear down the Aggies.
The Aggies kept pressure on the pocket led by Hale Motu’apuaka team with 2 sacks.
Now San Jose State Spartans will host Hawaii at 12:30pm for end of the season. The Utah St Aggies will travel to Bosie to play on TV against Boise State Broncos at 9am Friday November 25.
