USC starts fast and goes on to rout Washington State to remain undefeated

Los Angeles, CA – It was all USC in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 28-0 lead. Amon-Ra St. Brown put on a show with four touchdown receptions in the opening quarter and No. 16 USC rolled to a 38-13 win over Washington State on Sunday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

“The last game where I had four touchdowns was actually my first game in high school as a junior,” St. Brown said. “That’s the last time I had four touchdowns in a game. So, for it to come today, in college, was crazy because it’s very uncommon. I’m just glad my teammates and coaches trusted me.”

St. Brown’s four touchdowns in the first quarter tied the NCAA record for touchdowns of any kind in a single quarter, a feat accomplished only seven other times and last done by Terry Caulley of UConn vs. Kent State on Nov. 9, 2002.

“I thought we really started out hot and the playmakers did an amazing job,” USC head coach Clay Helton said. “There’s a reason that ‘C’ is on Amon-Ra St. Brown’s chest because he is an unselfish player. You go three games and you’re not in the end zone, we talked about it and don’t change a thing. Touchdowns come in bunches and he’s just played the same, unselfish, physical game each and every week.”

After an incomplete pass to start the game, sophomore quarterback Kedon Slovis completed 17 consecutive passes in the first half and finished the game with 287 yards and five touchdowns.

After stopping the Cougars on fourth-and-one in the opening drive, USC drove down the field with the help of Drake London’s 20 and 30 yard receptions.

Slovis hit St. Brown on a 7-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Following a three-and-out by Washington State, Slovis connected with St. Brown once again, this time for a 22-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing drive, USC safety Talanoa Hufanga tipped the pass to himself for the interception, hurdled a would be tackler, and returned it 37 yards to the Cougars’ 4-yard line. USC didn’t waste any time, pitching the ball to St.Brown on 1st-and-goal for his third touchdown of the game.

An interception by Olaijah Griffin set up St. Brown’s fourth touchdown of the game. Slovis hit Tyler Vaughn down the right sideline for a 35-yard touchdown and a 35-0 lead in the second quarter. Washington State running back Travell Harris scored on a 5-yard run but the Cougars missed the extra point and trailed 35-6 heading into halftime.

“I thought Kedon (Slovis) was extremely accurate in this game 25-of-32 including five touchdowns,” Helton said. “We didn’t play our best ball in the second half, so there’s always some stuff that we can crack down on offensively, but to get a 25-point win, 16 point win last week and 25-point win this week, I think we’re making progress each week.”

USC was held to field goal in the second half and the Cougars added a late touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Trojans defense forced three turnovers and held Washington State’s offense to 263 total yards.

Up next for USC is the 90th showdown with crosstown rival UCLA at the Rose Bowl next Saturday. The Trojans are one win away from a berth in the PAC-12 title game.

Bruins survive ASU comeback, above .500 for first time in four years

Tempe, AZ – After leading 17-3 into halftime, UCLA had complete dominance throughout the game. Arizona State looked sluggish in the first 30 minutes, whereas the Bruins found rhythm. The tables turned once the third quarter hit, and many UCLA fans had a funny feeling when they saw their lead slip away gaining just 11 yards in their first 18 plays of the second half. All that weight was lifted off of their shoulders on a key drive late in the game with a great mix in the air and on the ground. UCLA escapes with a 25-18 win and puts them over .500 for the first time since 2017.

“All of our game was dictated by ASU’s defense,” “It was huge to get Dorian back for us to help bring out a balanced attack. Dorian’s legs and arms, and how limited our running game was, allowed for us to take control.”

Since Kelly took over the program, the Bruins have started off their seasons on the wrong end. It looked that way when they lost to Colorado in their season opener. Now, it seems as if the Buffs loss may actually be a loss they can reflect on, considering they have now won three of their last four contests. To do it also with a backup quarterback in their last two contests and hang around against a tough Oregon team has shown that UCLA just needed a game to figure themselves out.

“I am really proud of our defense,” “We talked about playing hard and playing hard for 60 minutes. Our offense was big today, but our defense was huge to get us a big win.”

Arizona State did not end up being a walk in the park, however. UCLA’s 17-0 lead to start the game helped off by Dorian Thompson Robinson’s play with two first half touchdowns, one on the ground. Arizona State only managed a field goal and was forced to punt in three of their five drives in the first half. All that changed when Jayden Danleis goes trick play, allowing wide receiver Ricky Pearsall connect on a long pass play after a reverse for over 50 yards. Arizona State scores into the end zone three plays later. It might have been the shock the Bruins felt after as they only managed a handful of yards throughout the third and part of the fourth quarter. They eventually saw their lead dwindle after giving up a safety and then another score to give ASU an 18-17 lead.

UCLA’s final drive managed 11 plays but only took just over three minutes. Just like in the first half, both Thompson Robinson and Felton took care of the Bruins offense. Felton’s short run to the endzone and a two point conversion gave UCLA the lead right back. Arizona State was stopped on their final drive that wrapped things up.

With Felton limited running for just 45 yards on 10 carries, Thompson-Robinson instead led all ball carriers with 15, which allowed for UCLA to take command of mixing their game plan around. It was what they wanted against ASU.

“I am blessed to be off for two weeks and have the chance to get back in the game mid week and prepare the right way,” Thompson Robinson said. “It felt nice to get back out there, but I give a lot of credit to the coaching staff to prepare me and my team for a game like this.”

UCLA now rides an above .500 record for the first time in years. What could change this program for the better? A win over USC next week can certainly change a lot of minds as to which football program has begin to figure themselves out, even if it has taken a few years to make that happen.

UCLA Played A Complete Game Over Arizona

Pasadena, CA –

What can you make after a UCLA win like this?

Still without Dorian Thompson Robinson, the Bruins seemed like all they wanted to do was get just enough to squeak by a 27-10 win over Arizona. Chase Griffin’s stats were not all that impressive, but he got the job done with a 129 yard and one touchdown night. Demetric Felton had nearly 200 yards rushing along with another touchdown. But it was the UCLA defense and bad Arizona miscues that gave the Bruins control of the game from the second quarter on.

“I am proud of our guys tonight,” Bruins head coach Chip Kelly said. “Demetric played his heart out and had a career night. Chase was also great as well. I preached all week long about ball security and our offense protected the ball when they needed to.”

“It is a blessing to be where we were tonight,” Griffin said. “Our offense did a great job doing the job that we needed to get the win. Our defense and special teams were als stellar. Clearly it was a team win tonight that we all earned together.”

After going down 7-3 in the first, the Bruins eventually got comfortable, taking the lead on a 16 yard pass to Brittain Brown. After forcing a turnover on downs, the Bruins got Felton involved, needing just five plays with all on the ground leading him in to his only score. While the Bruins were unable to get anything on the offensive end in the third quarter with three straight three and outs, UCLA’s defense came through when they were need most, only allowing a field goal the rest of the way.

UCLA also snagged two interceptions, both coming on the final drives for Arizona.

“It is a combination of our entire defensive crew,” Kelly said. “At the beginning of the season we talked about bringing the best guys possible in order to win football games. Credit our defense and our defensive staff to get the job done, especially tonight.”

UCLA, now at 2-2, has looked far better in comparison to their Colorado game. While hanging around against Oregon last week, the Bruins have given a lot to work with for Kelly. Losing their starting quarterback seems to have made this more than just a next man up kind of scenario, possibly proving that Kelly’s recruits may be a benefit for the future of the program.

“With our guys, and with Chase who had to step up like he had to tonight,” Kelly said. “It is nice to have players who can adjust under times like this. We have smart football players and our dedication is pretty high.”
UCLA will have their chance to go above .500 again as they head to Tempe to face Arizona State. The Sun Devils have not played since week 1 of the Pac-12 season as they have dealt with COVID and roster issues, missing out on three straight games.

Cal turnovers the AX to Stanford

Los Angeles, CA- Stanford seized opportunities all afternoon accepting Cal’s gift of a victory. The third phase of the game Special Teams was the gamechanger, the final extra point block was the dagger for Cal. The final score Stanford Cardinal 24 Cal Bears 23 with 14 points off of turnovers.

After Cal Scored on 3rd and Goal, Cal decided to play for overtime going for one and not for the win going for two. Stanford got a big push on the right side during the extra point and blocked it with 58 seconds left on the game clock.

Grinding out a victory and finding a way to win is how David Shaw’s Cardinal did it. Now Stanford did amass 300 total yards behind fifth year quarterback Davis Mills who threw for 205 yards (24-32 passing) with a touchdown and no interceptions.

Austin Jones carried the load on the ground with 21 carries for 85 tough yards with 2 touchdowns for Stanford.

The 123rd Big Game as always for big bragging rights and it was the winner first victory in this crazy wild 2020 PAC-12 Covid-19 season. Before today’s match up both teams were unsuccessful in first two outings.

Cal has to be disappointed with the outcome but not the offensive output of the field with 392 total yards with 241 of those yards on the ground.

Damien Moore rushed for 121 yards, breaking a long 54-yard run where he was caught from behind.

On Cal opening series after the second half the running back fumbled to allow Stanford another opportunity and that they did turning it into a touchdown and first lead of the game 17-10 third quarter.

Just before the half with Stanford trailing 3-10 with just under 5 mins, the momentum switched after Cal muffed punt gave new life. Then a few plays later Stanford took advantage of the turnover making it a 10-10 game. To close out the half Stanford also blocked the field goal to keep the Bears off the scoreboard.

The nightmare of errors was to much in the end to overcome, muffed punt, fumble and blocked extra point.

The AX now will move back across the bay for the year with Stanford.

Oregon State Upsets Oregon In Their 124th Rivalry Game

CORVALLIS, OR– In their 124th meeting, the Oregon State Beavers narrowly defeated the 15th ranked Oregon Ducks 41-38, earning Jonathan Smith what is arguably his biggest win to date as head coach. Smith, who led the Beavers to a Fiesta Bowl victory as their starting quarterback in 2001, now brings them to 2-2 in his third season as head coach and increases his record to 9-19.

The Ducks started quickly after they easily moved the ball on the game’s opening possession, which was capped by a 37-yard touchdown run from Jaylon Redd. Oregon State answered immediately, however, as star running back Jermar Jefferson took his first carry 82-yards for the tying score. Jefferson finished the night with 226 yards on 29 attempts and 2 touchdowns.

Despite a poor performance from Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough, the Ducks led the majority of the game and were up 31-19 heading into the 4th quarter. The turning point for the Beavers came after they capitalized on Shough’s third turnover, where Nashon Wright intercepted Shough’s pass inside Oregon’s territory. The Beavers scored in two plays to take their first lead of the game at 34-31 after a 2-yard Jefferson touchdown run and a two-point conversion by quarterback Tristan Gebbia.

Trying to make a game winning stand while the Ducks led 38-34 with only 40 seconds left on the clock, Oregon stopped Gebbia on an attempted 3rd and goal quarterback sneak from inches out. Gebbia suffered an injury on the play, forcing the junior college transfer from Saddleback College, Chance Nolan, to enter the game. On his first Division I snap, Nolan stepped up and scored the game winning touchdown on another quarterback sneak.

At 2-2, Oregon State looks to record their first winning season under Jonathan Smith next week as they travel to face the University of Utah. Oregon will try to bounce back on the road against Cal after losing their fist game of the season, and possibly falling out of the College Football Playoff rankings.

NFL’s first all-Black officiating crew live on Monday Night Football

Los Angeles, CA – Are we ready for some football, well Black America who love sports will be tuning in tonight for a Week 11 match up being officiated by an all Black crew. This will be the first time for the NFL with the lights burning bright for the nation to see.

“Hope, Achievement, and Finally, ” said Tony Crittendon local Los Angeles Based Referee.

This night will be a historic milestone, with the all-Black officiating crew will work an NFL game but, the BIG Ten NCAA Conference already beat them to the punch. On October 24, 2020 on ABC in a game between Michigan @ Minnesota also with full black crew that also included Replay official, Communicator and the Timer.

So yes the NFL is still late to the party, in this case folks will still stand up a salute this effort.

“This historic Week 11 crew is a testament to the countless and immeasurable contributions of Black officials to the game, their exemplary performance, and to the power of inclusion that is the hallmark of this great game.” said Troy Vincent NFL VP of football operations.

The Los Angeles Rams led by a strong defense with Aaron Donald up front and Jalen Ramsey in the secondary looking to slow down the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Just as kids will be watching the players play the game, there will be Youth League, High School, Junior College, and College officials envisioning themselves in this game too.

“This is very aspiring for young black officials,” said Kevin Morris JUCO/ High School Referee.

White Hat (Referee) Jerome Boger will lead the crew. He’s a former Morehouse College quarterback in his 17th year as a league official. Boger worked Super Bowl XLVII in February 2013.

Monday night’s group will include umpire Barry Anderson, down judge Julian Mapp, line judge Carl Johnson, side judge Dale Shaw, field judge Anthony Jeffries and back judge Greg Steed.

The NFL typically assembles its 17 officiating crews prior to the season and works to keep them together for each game to promote cohesion and communication.

Four of the NFL’s 17 referee/crew chiefs are Black — Boger, Ron Torbert, Adrian Hill and Shawn Smith — a higher percentage than for NFL coaches or general managers. Two members of its three-man leadership team, senior vice president of officiating Al Riveron and senior vice president of officiating administration Perry Fewell, are minorities.

The NFL hired Burl Toler, the first Black official in any major sports league, in 1965.

“It will be a great to see a group of well qualified officials share this experience together,” said Quinton Givens Big Twelve Officials , “All of these official are generous with their time, have helped (and continue to help) many upcoming official; including myself.”

Shorthanded, UCLA Has Proven To Possibly Shake Up Pac 12 South

This was a game that UCLA should not have been in from start to finish.

The Bruins had nine players not make the trip to Eugene. Dorian Thompson Robinson had to sit out. Their running depth was depleted with Keegan Jones and Kazmir Allen gone. With so much offensive depth gone, red shirt freshman Chase Griffin was given the call, who has never thrown a collegiate pass in his career.

You really don’t know much about what to expect though until the game is actually played. At one point UCLA actually had a lead. Griffin didn’t show off his inexperience as he was hitting targets left and right. With a connection to tight end Gred Dulcich for 32 yards, it gave the Bruins a small lead. It gave the Bruins a lot of hope. It gave the Bruins a possibility for everyone to turn their attention to what could brew as one of the most incredible shakeups in the 2020 college football season.

But then the inexperience finally surfaced when Griffin, on the last play of the first half, heaved a ball avoiding a sack hoping for some magic. Instead, he found the arms of Jordan Happle of Oregon and took it for a 58 yard pick six. It put the Bruins back down at the break. However, this game did scare a lot of Oregon fans, and that included Ducks head coach Mario Cristobal.
“That score at the end of the half does not change our conversation about what happened in the entire first half,” Cristobal said. “We are playing off our game right now. We have to regroup. This is a very tough game and we feel like we are letting our guard down.”

After the pick six, UCLA was expected to let the game go and hand this game off to the Ducks like everyone was waiting for. Oregon managed a 10 point lead with their opening drive of the second half. UCLA answered right back with Felton’s legs with most of the 13 play drive, ending it with a Brittain Brown run. After another Ducks score, it was yet another long drive by the Bruins that required much more from Felton and Brown. Only down 3 with a few minutes left, UCLA managed a stop and earned themselves one final chance, but Griffin only managed to get the Bruins to the 44 yard line of Oregon before they eventually sputtered out.

“Chase was outstanding,” Kelly said. “He is a competitor. When you have an opportunity you take advantage of it and Chase did that. When we know pretty much on Thursday we knew that we had a next man up, and Chase filled that role.”

“I also thought Felton was awesome. I wanted to run the ball and it hurts when we had a great run game and end up losing anyway. To have 34 carries and do what he did is incredible knowing our depth was taken away today.”

Sure it was a 38-35 loss. Sure this puts UCLA back under .500 with Chip Kelly. In a short seven game season, every game is extremely important. With the rest of UCLA’s schedule, however, there is still that very high chance that they can finish above .500 with potential winnable games against Arizona and Arizona State coming up before hosting USC. To hang around against Oregon like they did, maybe more people could consider this Bruins team to ruin the Pac-12 south structure. They just hop that losing the Colorado to start the season will end up haunting them come the end of the season.

UCLA Wins Statement Game In Unexpected Matchup

Los Angeles, CA – With less than two days to prepare, UCLA didn’t make it seem like it wouldn’t phase them. At the end of the day, it was a game that UCLA hadn’t had in years under Chip Kelly. Just about everything right went form them, nearly ousting them in every category, in a dominating 34-10 victory that should build confidence for the trip to Eugene.

“It all came down to experience and game film,” Bruins head coach Chip Kelly said. “Their defense was not a mystery but their offense was. What mattered was what they had done to us last year and all of their game film from the year before, and especially their bowl game, made a huge difference for us to figure them out on the defensive end. Offensively with a new coordinator, that was a challenge, but they responded very well.”

Combined the Bruins outgained the Bears in all aspects, but it was the running game that proved dominant. As a team UCLA rushed for just under 244 yards while holding Cal to just 54 yards on 28 carries. Dorian Thompson Robinson didn’t dazzle on the stat sheet, throwing for 14-for-26 and under 200 yards. His three touchdowns however all came in the first half which pushed Cal away from the game by halftime.

“I was real pleased with the run game,” Kelly said “I felt like Felton and our offensive line did everything right in the running game Everyone kept themselves honest.”

Amidst from all the uncertainty, it was all smiles in the UCLA locker room. While Kelly and the team enjoy the victory, it was another 2020 scenario where both the Bruins and Cal had to adjust with very little time to prepare.

Pasadena, CA – Cal Golden Bears vs UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl on Sunday November 15, 2020. (Photo by William Johnson / fi360 News)

“We really only had 43 hours,” Kelly said. “It was basically comparing from Utah to Cal and figure out what would work and what wouldn’t. We would look at plays, keep some, and throw some out. All we really had was walk through without pads and that was it. The only true advantage was travel since we didn’t have to.”

Demetric Felton rushed for another 100 yard game, finishing with 107 yards on 25 carries. Defensively the Bruins sacked Chase Garbers five times, while the Bruins offensive line protected Thompson Robinson the entire game keeping him upright.

Eugene is next on UCLA’s schedule. Kelly appreciates wins, but getting through each day clean is what the Bruins worry about the most. To UCLA, playing football is a reward where they worry more about the process than anything else.

Pasadena, CA – Cal Golden Bears vs UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl on Sunday November 15, 2020. (Photo by William Johnson / fi360 News)

“You can compare this to preparing between a Sunday and Thursday night football game in the NFL,” Kelly said. “But it is all about protecting everyone. It was real unfortunate what happened to Utah but we were ready to play them. For us, we are worried more about the process getting to game time safely rather than the result. Playing the game means everything when we are given the all clear.”

“I do worry about what is around us, but I know here we are taking the right precautions so that we can play. Safety means a lot to us,” Felton said.

Rams Shut Down Russell Wilson And The Seahawks At SoFi Stadium

INGLEWOOD, CA –The Los Angeles Rams are tied for the lead in the NFC West after beating divisional foe the Seattle Seahawks, 23-16 on Sunday at SoFi Stadium. Improving to 6-3, the keys to victory included brilliance from Jared Goff, winning the turnover battle and a smothering defense, wreaking havoc on Russell Wilson all afternoon.

Taking an early 10-7 lead courtesy of a short touchdown run courtesy of Darrell Henderson, the Rams defense forced three turnovers handing Seattle their second consecutive loss. Jared Goff utilized the play action pass to his benefit, going 27 of 37 for 302 yards in the air.

Los Angeles defense clipped the Seahawks soaring attack, only allowing a paltry 333 total yards. The Seahawks looked helpless. Former MVP frontrunner Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson failed to find the end zone, while accounting for three costly turnovers, including two interceptions by Rams cornerback Darious Williams.

The Rams defense stymied the league’s NO.1 offense.
Ranked as the NFL’s second best defense in both yards and points allowed, the Rams sacked Wilson six times in the victory. Also, the secondary contained deep threats wide receivers Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf. Metcalf had only two receptions for 28 yards.

Josh Reynolds snagged eight receptions for 94 yards, while running back Malcolm Brown had two rushing touchdowns.

At a mark of 6-3, the Rams are tied with the Arizona Cardinals atop the crowded and talented NFC West division. Unfortunately, Rams left tackle Andrew Whitworth suffered a leg injury, and was carted off the field. Whitworth is an emotional anchor for the Rams as well as their best lineman.

Next week, the Rams travel to Florida to face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night on ESPN.

What the Stanford game taught us about The Buffaloes

Boulder, CU – After a close win against the Stanford Cardinals on Saturday, the Colorado Buffaloes are now 2-0, leaving Colorado fans with a lot to celebrate as the team moves forward in this shortened season.

Unfortunately, a spike in Covid-19 cases at Arizona State caused the Pac-12 to cancel the game that was supposed to occur this upcoming Saturday at Folsom Field. This is the second week in a row that Arizona has had their game canceled due to Covid-19 cases.

But the Buffaloes have the USC Trojans to look forward to on November 28th and an extra week to prepare for this showdown.

Here are a couple of takeaways from yesterday’s game.

Head Coach Karl Dorrell’s positive direction:

On Sunday morning, Dorrell received a handful of votes in the USA Today Coaches poll. Something that Dorrell will most likely not care about since he has stated from the beginning that he only cares about improving the team and winning.

The last two games provide insight into how important his leadership has been. All sides of the ball played their hearts out to well thought out schemes made for the team they have around them. And a well-coached team will have the entire depth chart ready to play and ready to play well–and that has been the case as the team has dealt with multiples injuries. Good coaching also comes clutch in close games, and that has been the case for the Buffaloes two wins.

The offensive is effective and well balanced:

Included in the Buffaloes 432 total offensive yardswere 177 rushing yards, and 255 passing yards. The number of rushing attempts almost doubled passing attempts, but the strength from both helped provide the team with five total touchdowns. Two through the air and three on the ground, and if the Buffaloes can continue this success, you can expect every game to include over five touchdowns.

Jarek Broussard is the real deal:

After a monster performance for his first start the week before, which included three touchdowns and 187 rushing yards, the sophomore continued to prove his talent in week two. Despite not scoring any touchdowns, Broussard rushed for 121 yards and an average of 4.5 yards a carry. Now he has over 300 rushing yards in two starts. His running has helped set the tempo of the offense and made life easier for quarterback Sam Noyer in the passing game.
