Rams Fall To Bengals On Monday Night Football

CINCINNATI– Despite a standout effort by the Rams defense, and a late fourth quarter come back the Los Angeles Rams were defeated by the Cincinnati Bengals 19-16 on Monday, September 25th.

This Super Bowl rematch was a very sloppy game-incluiding turnovers missed opportunities and failure converting in the red zone- may have cost the Rams a precious win.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford had a rough game, he threw two costly interceptions and the Rams sputtered in the red zone.

Failing to capitalize on several key possessions and drives, Los Angeles was forced to settle for field goals. Going one for five in the red zone on Monday night.

Stafford completed 18 of 33 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown and was intercepted twice by Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson.

Before their touchdown drive in the waning moments, the Rams ran eight plays in the red zone for minus-10 yards. Stafford was 1-of-7 passing in the red zone.

The Bengals kept the Rams out of the end zone for the first 58-plus minutes, with quarterback Joe Burrow and the offense doing just enough to complement the effort on the other side.

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald had a bounce back game after only recording a QB hit against the San Francisco 49ers, but he and the defense put pressure on Joe Burrow on Monday night. In the first half alone Donald had three quarterback pressures on Burrow, which is as many as he had in the Rams’ first two games this season. On those plays, Burrow was 0-of-1 and sacked twice.

When all hope seemed lost, Stafford found Rookie phenom Puka Nacua on a deep connection. On the next play, score a touchdown as Tutu Atwell caught a 1-yard pass from Matthew Stafford in the game’s 58th minute.

With just a minute left: Bengals 19 Rams 16. Sadly, the onside kick was recovered by the Bengals and that was it.

The Rams fall to 1-2 on the year, next Sunday the road trip continues with a visit to Lucas Oil Stadium to face the Indianapolis Colts.

Chargers Get First Win Of Year

Daiyan Henley celebrates. (Photo by Jevone Moore)

MINNESOTA– In a wild Week 3 thriller, the Los Angeles Chargers beat the Minnesota Vikings 28-24 on Sunday, September 24th. It was a roller coaster ride which included another risky decision by Chargers head coach Brandon Staley. Thankfully, the Charger defense secured their first victory of the season.

Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen put on a show, helping the Chargers overcome injuries to Mike Williams and Derwin James Jr. Justin Herbert passed for more than 400 yards and Keenan Allen had more than 200 receiving yards as the Chargers move to (1-2) on the season.

In the fourth quarter trailing by three, The Bolts advanced to midfield and faced third-and-17.This set the stage for Herbert to find Allen for 20 yards as the wide receiver set a new career best with 215 receiving yards.

Williams (knee) and safety Derwin James Jr. (hamstring) left the game early because of injuries.

Herbert certainly never drew it up this way but either way it was the game winning TD pass. In position to make an interception, Minnesota Cornerback Akayleb Evans instead had the ball bounce off his hands and into Josh Palmer’s waiting grasp.

The Chargers wideout then tumbled into the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown. It was Herbert’s 100th career touchdown pass.

As every Chargers fan knows by now, a lead in the 4th quarter is never safe.

Minnesota had first-and-goal at the 3 but was denied on four plays, including a Michael Davis pass breakup on fourth down intended for Jefferson. The Bolts began at the 2 but quickly got a first down on an Allen reception.

At their own 24 yard line the Chargers faced fourth-and-1 at their own 24. Staley rolled the dice and went for it.

The Vikings defense stuffed the Chargers on 4th Down, it seemed all hope was lost for the Bolts fans.

With not only the game on the line, but the entire season, the Los Angeles Chargers defense came to the rescue and preserved the first win of the season.

Kenneth Murray Jr. intercepted a deflected pass in the end zone with six seconds left to seal the Chargers’ win. After losing so many nail biters, the breaks finally went the Chargers way.

It took a late in 4th quarter surge for USC to walk away for the Sun Devils 42-28 and move to 4-0.

“For the first three quarters, it was kind of an example of how the road games can challenge you,” USC coach Lincoln Riley said. “It was an example how mistakes tend to show up on the road a little bit different than they do at home.”

Arizona St kept in the game earlier by capitalizing on USC mistakes, Sun Devils Tate Romley (#24) took off in the A gap and received a gift of a fumble on Williams (#13) exchange with his running back in the 1st quarter.

Right after the turnover by USC, Arizona St was able to get on the board on 3 & 10 with a shifty Cam Skattbo jump cut 15-yard scamper backside to endzone. The home team Sun Devils were so fired up being tied 7-7 midway through the first quarter of play.

Williams kept grinding all night throwing 3 touchdowns for 322 yards on 20/31 passes.

The Trojans are finding out that MarShawn Lloyd (#0) is capable of carrying the load with 14 carries for 154 yards to help control the time of possession.

They kept the pressure on causing a fumble on the next kickoff, but the call was called down that helped USC dodge going down early.

The Utah Utes, riding high with an unblemished 4-0 record (1-0 in the Pac-12), demonstrated their prowess by holding the UCLA Bruins, who entered the game at 3-1 (0-1 in the Pac-12), to a mere 7 points.

Despite facing a determined UCLA squad, the Utes managed to build a commanding 14-0 lead, a testament to their outstanding defensive and offensive capabilities. Their defense made a dramatic statement right at the beginning when linebacker Karene Reid intercepted a pass and raced 21 yards into the end zone, giving Utah an electrifying 7-0 lead just 12 seconds into the opening quarter.

Utah’s offensive prowess shone through in the second quarter when they embarked on an impressive nine-play, 51-yard drive that culminated in a seven-yard touchdown pass from Nate Johnson to tight end Landen King, occurring with just 61 seconds left before halftime, extending their lead to 14-0.

As the halftime whistle blew, the Utes enjoyed a comfortable 14-0 advantage, maintaining their dominance throughout. Neither team managed to score in the third quarter, as Utah’s defense continued to stifle the Bruins’ offensive efforts.

Johnson, Utah’s quarterback, displayed precision by completing nine of 17 pass attempts for 117 yards without any interceptions. This efficient performance helped maintain Utah’s lead and secure the victory.

Despite the formidable challenge posed by UCLA, Utah’s defense held firm, allowing only 7 points. Dan Lanning’s Ducks Humble Coach Prime’s Buffaloes

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

EUGENE, OR – Celebrities and media frenzy took Autzen Stadium by storm Saturday as Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes came to town, but all the hype surrounding the game quickly came crashing down as the No. 10 ranked Ducks routed the No. 19 ranked Buffaloes 42-6.

In what head coach Deion Sanders described as “a good old fashioned butt-kicking”, Heisman hopeful Bo Nix posted another stellar performance, completing 28/33 attempts for 276 yards, 3 passing touchdowns, and adding another on the ground.

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

The Ducks scored on their opening drive, marching 72 yards in 10 plays before Noah Wittington scored on a 3-yard touchdown.

Lanning had an aggressive game plan, clearly looking to make a statement on national TV. Following their first drive, the Ducks converted on 4th down and unsuccessfully attempted a 2-point conversion after a 1-yard touchdown rush by Casey Kelly.

On their third possession, the Ducks caught everyone in the stadium off guard as they converted a fake punt from their own 17-yard line on a direct snap to defensive lineman Casey Rogers who took off for an 18-yard gain. Nix finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Troy Franklin and then connected with him again on another 2-point attempt.

Franklin would go on to catch another touchdown from Nix on a 36-yard post route that was left uncovered, finishing with 8 receptions for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

Nix made his only major mistake of the day on his 4th drive when his pass, which was intended for Troy Franklin, was intercepted by Jahquez Robinson. The interception was Bo’s first of the season.

Colorado tried to build on the momentum following their interception when Shedeur Sanders found wide receiver Michael Harrison for an 11-yard gain, but the Oregon defensive front quickly responded sacking Sanders on back-to-back plays for a combined loss of 23 yards and the Ducks forced a punt after a 12-yard rush by Anthony Hankerson the next play.

Heading into the half the Ducks led 35-0, and while Colorado had 21 total yards of offense, the Ducks had more first downs with 22.

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

The Buffaloes struggled to get anything going offensively due to the constant pressure by Oregon’s defensive front who sacked Sanders a total of 7 times. Oregon’s defense held Colorado to 199 total yards, 127 of which came in the fourth quarter. When asked about the play from the defense, Nix stated “They were outstanding today. Applied a bunch of pressure, made great open field tackles, they just played really solid football”.

Colorado’s only scoring drive came late in the 4th quarter where Sanders was able to move the ball 93 yards on 14 plays. Sanders finished the series with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Michael Harrison, bringing the game to its final score of 42-6 when the extra point attempt was blocked by Alejandro Mata.

Dee Ford was a bright light in a tough injury high game leading his defense with 8 tackles making room for Ro Torrence to get two sacks tied with Prince Dorbah who sacked Keene too.

The defense pressure and okay play forced Fresno St to settle for field goals on 5 of their scoring plays.

Boulder, CO- The late-night game watched by over 16 million viewers live on ESPN and a sold-out crowd at Folsom ended up in a double overtime 43-35 win for Colorado.

Despite being out played on both sides of the ball for most of the game, Colorado still came back from a 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

The first two drives for both teams ended poorly for their offenses. The Rams first drive ended with a third and out after two penalties, resulting in -17 yards in total offense. Colorado didn’t fare much better with -1 yard in total offense and an interception from Shadeur Sanders, his first interception this season.

Colorado State’s next drive went for 10 plays and 54 yards and three first downs. First, Colorado State kicked a field goal, however, a penalty by Colorado gave their drive life with a first and 15.

Two plays later defensive back Shilo Sanders intercepted redshirt freshman Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi’s pass for an 80-yard pick six. An extra point put Colorado up 7-0.

The Rams next drive ended in three plays thanks to a 46-yard pass deep to the left. A thirty yard pass off a backwards pass to Tory Horton who threw it to Dallin Holker for the Rams touchdown.

The Rams then secured their lead after a 10-yard pass to Travis Hunter, who caught the pass and ran into a group of Rams and fumbled the ball. The Rams turned the fumble into a score and returned it back for a touchdown.

The Rams were now up by 14-7.

With two drives ending with turnovers, the team marched down for their first offensive touchdown to tie the game, ending in a 24-yard strike off a post route from Shadeur Sanders to Xavier Weaver.

The Rams scored the next touchdown off a 15-yard pass from Brayden to Louis Brown IV, who caught it off a post between two Colorado defenders.

The Rams were now up 21-14.

In the first half the Rams outplayed Colorado in almost every category. The Rams had 168 more total yards, more passing and rushing yards, a higher average per completion yards, 21 more total offensive plays and twice as much possession time.

“Played like Garbage in the first half,” coach Sander said in the post-game press conference. “Tried to get it together in the second half.”

However, the Rams had 11 penalties in the first half to Colorado’s four, resulting in 133 in lost yards.

The Buffs also lost their star cornerback and receiver Travis Hunter to an unknown injury; he was sent to a local hospital for further evaluation.

The Buffs first drive followed the same rhythm as their last couple with another three and out. And another Rams drive took them to Colorado territory, down to Colorado’s 14. Again, another turnover stopped the Rams drive — this time a fumble — and gave Colorado the ball.

This led to another Colorado punt.

But a blocked Rams field goal gave Colorado life again.

After a couple of first downs, the Colorado offense was finally in CSU territory again, the first time since their touchdown drive in the first quarter. Unfortunately for the Buffs, the drive ended in a blocked field goal by the Rams.

Penalties plagued the Rams on their next drive, leading to a first & 21. Another interception, this time by defensive back Craig Silmon, gave the Buffaloes great field position on CSU’s 45.

This was the Ram’s third Turnover, and the second to lead to points. This time the Buffs scored three on a 20-yard field goal, scoring only 10 points off three Rams turnover.

The Rams then extended their lead to 28-17 on their next drive, a seven play 76-yard drive that took 2:56 off the time clock.

Colorado followed it up with a 41-yard field goal by kicker Alejandro Mata, 28-20.

After the field goal, CSU punted with 2:06 left in the match.

With 98 yards to go, Colorado drove down the field, using only 1:30 on the clock. Sanders went through all his reads until he found tight end Michael Harrison wide open in the corner, who ran it in for a 45-yard touchdown, tying the game 28-28.

“All I was thinking was Brady mode. If he could do it, I can do it,” Shadeur Sanders said after the game. “We just alike.”

A two-point conversion tied everything, placing the game into overtime.

In over-time the excitement didn’t end. Colorado won the coin toss and selected to start on offense. They scored after four plays thanks to a second touchdown from Sanders to Harrison.

Colorado State replied with a touchdown pass in four plays.

Another touchdown from Sanders to Harrison on a post led to Colorado scoring six again in sudden death. This time the team chose to go for two, to force Colorado State to also go for two.

And it paid off as Sanders fought off pressure from two CSU lineman and found a receiver alone at the back of the end zone.

CSU’s next drive came down to one play. After a couple of penalties and incompletions, they were faced with 4 & goal from the 23rd.  And it ended with an interception from defensive back Trevor Woods, giving Colorado the win, 43-35.

Before the game, there was a full media day in Boulder with ESPN’s “College GameDay” and Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” both in town Saturday for the Rocky Mountain Showdown.

The interstate rivalry showdown began in 1893; there have been 91 total meetings and the last one occurred in 2019. Colorado now leads the showdown 68-22-2, and currently sits at a five-game win streak.

Colorado is now 3-0 as CSU falls to 0-2.

Oregon Moves to 3-0 Following Blowout Victory Over Hawaii

Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News

EUGENE, OR – After narrowly avoiding an upset last week against Texas Tech, the Oregon Ducks returned to Autzen Stadium Saturday where they handedly defeated the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 55-10 in their final non-conference game of the season.

The Ducks wasted no time tuning up both sides of the ball Saturday, forcing a quick three-and-out on Hawaii’s opening drive that consisted of three incomplete passes and needing only two plays on offense for Bo Nix to connect with his adopted brother Tez Johnson on a 49-yard touchdown less than one minute into play.

Oregon scored 34 straight points in the first half before Hawaii finally put together a scoring drive. Capitalizing on two personal foul penalties by Ducks, Hawaii quarterback Brayden Schagner was able to move the Rainbow Warriors into field goal range where Matthew Shipley would cap the drive with a 29-yard field goal.

QB Bo Nix cheers on his team. (Photo by Megan Connelly / fi360 News)

Bo Nix posted another impressive outing, finishing 21 of 27 with 247 yards and 3 TDs. Troy Franklin, Tez Johnson, and Traeshon Holden all had 4 receptions. Franklin led the group in receiving yards with 83, while Johnson and Holden both had 2 touchdown receptions. The Ducks also continued to showcase their running back depth. Bucky Irving, Noah Whittington, and Jordan James rushed for a combined 200 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Late in the fourth quarter backup quarterback Ty Thompson found Traeshon Holden on a slant route that he was able to break for a 60-yard score. Thompson, who finished 4 of 6 with 85 yards and a touchdown, has looked poised this season. Clearly benefiting from the additional game reps Thompson explained that “Being comfortable on the field comes with reps, and I’m getting more reps… I feel like I’m the same player, just kind of maturing in my game”.

On their final possession, Hawaii was able to score their only touchdown of the game. Brayden Schagner led the Rainbow Warriors 75 yards on a ten-play drive, where he ultimately found wide receiver Alex Perry for a 1-yard touchdown pass which brought the game to its final score of 55-10.

Both of Hawaii’s scoring drives came on series that were heavily impacted by penalties against Oregon, something head coach Dan Lanning will need to clean up. After the game, Lanning expressed his frustration stating that he was “extremely disappointed with the penalties and how they hurt us… going into half with a ton of momentum and three penalties end up leading to a score there at the end of the first half… [and] penalties again in the last series that led to another score”.

The Ducks will host head coach Deion Sanders and his currently 18th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes next Saturday, September 23rd, at 12:30 PM PST in their first conference game of the year.
