UCLA opens up Big Ten play with convincing win over Washington

Westwood, CA – The UCLA men’s basketball team led from nearly start to finish as they took down the Washington Huskies and their first ever big 10 conference game.

The Bruins came away with a 69–58 win over the Huskies at the Pauley Pavilion on Tuesday night. It was another big game from UCLA’s leading scorer Tyler Bilodeau, who finished the game with 16 points.

However, it was UCLA guard Sebastian Mack who stole the show for the Bruins. Mack had 16 points off the bench in an offensive outburst as he finished tied with Bilodeau as the game’s leading scorer.

UCLA head coach Mick Cronin said that he’s come to expect high-scoring games like this from Mack, especially when the starting five can’t get much going offensively.

“He’s been great all year. He’s been the only consistent offensive threat for us on the perimeter. He still needs to improve on the defensive end, but it’s nice to have somebody like him who can create offense for us when we’re struggling,” Cronin said.

Mack credited his teammates for helping him get hot early on and feeding him the ball. UCLA finished with 16 assists in the win over Washington.

“My teammates knew I had the hand tonight, and I realize it when my other guys have the hand too. We’ve got a lot of great guys on our team, so we can bounce off of each other,” Mack said.

Cronin added that UCLA won the game because of the way they handled the ball, both offensively and defensively.

“I told the guys, we won because we only had eight turnovers and we took care of the ball. We had 16 assists, and that’s with missing a bunch of shots that were extremely makeable. Our passing, our team play, our execution was good. We rebounded it as hard as we could. The first half, that’s we were winning. When you take care of the ball, play defense, and get second shots, it puts pressure on the other team. Eventually, the ball goes in. But our constant is our defense,” Cronin said.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the first ten minutes of the game. Neither team could find much separation until UCLA picked up a 21-12 lead with 9:54 left in the first half.

Washington whittled away at UCLA’s lead and just as quickly as they went up, the Huskies brought it back to a 23-21 game with 3:33 left in the half.

The Bruins escaped into the half with a 29-24 lead, but opened the second half with a bit more juice.

UCLA kept their foot on the gas, but never ran away with the game. Washington would get within four points early in the second half, but never capitalized as the Bruins kept the Huskies at bay.

UCLA moves to a 7-1 record, a more promising start compared to last season’s 5-3 start. The Bruins will travel to Oregon to take on the undefeated No. 12-ranked Ducks. The game will be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network and tip-off is at 3 p.m

Trojans move to 7-1 with a record breaking performance from their star JuJu Watkins

Los Angeles, CA – The No. 6 Women of Troy came out clicking on all cylinders as they defeated the winless Cal Baptist University Lancers 94-52. Sophomore guard JuJu Watkins set a USC record with nine three-pointers as she scored 40 points in USC’s victory to help them advance to 7-1.

“I say to people, you should get to Galen whenever you can because you never know when something ridiculous is going to happen from Juju. And tonight, what a night from the three-point line”! Head coach Lindsay Gotlieb said after JuJu’s remarkable performance that left her two points shy of tying her Galen Center record of 42 points that was previously set on Feb. 23, 2024, vs. Colorado last season.

The Trojans led by 30 at halftime 50-20, thanks to their defense which recorded 8 of their 12 blocks in the first half. The Lancers were held to 28% shooting from the field making 9 of 32 attempts. USC shot 51% in the first half, making 17 of 33 attempts, and shot 54% from behind the arc connecting on 6 of 11 attempts from deep.

In the second half, USC continued their offensive onslaught. The Trojans shot 53% from the field and defensively held CBU to 37% from the floor. Juju nailed five of her nine three-pointers helping the Trojans round out the game by shooting 52% from the floor and 45% from behind the three-point line.

Talia von Oelhoffen scored 14 points, while Kiki Iriafen and Rayah Marshall each recorded double-doubles with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Grace Schmidt led the Lancers in scoring with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Claudia Fiel added 10 for CBU.

The Trojans’ highly anticipated Big Ten debut will come against a familiar opponent, the Oregon Ducks. The two teams will clash in Eugene on Saturday.  Lindsay Gotlieb has this to say as USC prepares for the matchup with the Ducks.“ Saturday is the most important one on our schedule you know thus far because it’s the beginning of conference play and Conference play I think is really the true indicator of how tough you are over the course of a season”.

Oregon finishes regular season undefeated after beating Washington

Photo by Evan Luecke / fi360 News

EUGENE, OR – For only the second time in program history, the Oregon Ducks finished the regular season undefeated after they beat the Washington Huskies 49-20 in what head coach Dan Lanning described as their “most complete game of the season”.

Only hours before kickoff the Huskies announced a quarterback change, electing to start true freshman Demond Williams Jr. over fifth-year senior Will Rogers. Williams Jr. finished his debut 17/20 with 201 yards and 1 touchdown, but was unable give the Huskies the spark they had hoped for due to the physical dominance of Oregon’s defensive front who recorded 10 sacks on the night.

Momentum briefly swung in Washington’s favor early in the first half when they recovered a fumble on Oregon’s 21 yard-line while trailing by only 4 points. Washington was unable to capitalize on the field position and settled for their second field-goal of the night bring the score to 7-6.

The Ducks quickly flipped the energy in Autzen, responding with a 4-play scoring drive that was capped with a 1-yard touchdown run from Jordan James. Washington running back Jonah Coleman fumbled on their next play from scrimmage, giving the Ducks the ball back in the red zone where James would punch in another 1-yard touchdown extending their lead to 15 at 21-6 after only 25 seconds of game time.

Oregon’s offense was efficient and well-rounded Saturday in large part due to the return of star wide receiver Tez Johnson. Tez suffered what was feared to be a season ending injury in week 6 against Ohio State but appeared to be back at full strength, logging 3 receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown.

When speaking about the importance Johnson’s return, quarterback Dillon Gabriel stated “More than playing I think it just helps with overall morale… We love Tez, we need him. He’s a big part of what we do”.

In their first season as part of the Big Ten conference the Ducks have earned a spot in the conference championship game where they will face the Penn State Nittany Lions in Indianapolis on December 7th.

With a victory next week the No. 1 ranked Oregon Ducks will secure a bye week in the College Football Playoff, where they look to win their first National Championship. The only other time the Ducks had an undefeated season was in 2010, where they ultimately lost 22-19 in the BCS National Championship Game against Cam Newton and the Auburn Tigers.

Los Angeles, CA – USC was in the red zone with a chance to score a game-tying touchdown when Jayden Maiava threw a pass to Kyron Hudson that was intercepted by Christian Gray and returned 99 yards for a touchdown.

Two minutes later, Maiava threw another interception that was returned 100 yards for a touchdown to seal No. 5 Notre Dame’s 49-35 win over USC Saturday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

“Excruciating loss. Really touch there at the end,” USC coach Lincoln Riley said. “We battled today, like we have all year. We just didn’t play quite good enough.”

Maiava passed for 360 yards with three touchdowns and rushed for two more touchdowns in his first loss as a starter. USC fell to 6-6 to end the season.

Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah scored from a yard out to give the Irish a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. USC opened the second quarter with a 5-play, 37-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Maiava.

In the final minute of the second quarter, Riley Leonard connected with Eli Raridon for a12-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead. USC drive down the field in five plays and Maiava threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Kobi Lane with 24 seconds left in the first half to tie it 14-14.

Notre Dame regained the lead in the third quarter on a 36-yard touchdown run from Jadarian Price. USC came back to tie it once again with Maiava’s 1-yard touchdown run.

Leonard scored on a 2-yard run and threw a 23-yard touchdown to give Notre Dame a 35-21 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Maiava threw his third touchdown of the game to Lane to make it a one-score game but the two late costly pick-6’s put the game out of reach.

“This team has put their heart and soul on the line,” Riley said. “Anybody that has watched us play, you can’t deny that. And to go through emotionally what we have and still continue to do it, you can’t question this football team.”

UCLA sends senior class off with comeback win over Fresno State

Photo by Jensen Fluellen / fi360 News

Pasadena, CA – The UCLA football team started the year off with a 1-5 record and looked flat heading into their week seven game vs. Rutgers. Since then, the Bruins have gone 4-2 in their last six games, including a 20-13 win over Fresno State to end their season on a high note.

It was senior day for the Bruins and for UCLA team captains Ethan Garbers and Carson Schwesinger, it was potentially the final time they’d step foot on the Rose Bowl as UCLA Bruins.

Photo by Jensen Fluellen / fi360 News

The Bruins trailed at the half as Fresno State came out and put up a 10-point second quarter to go into halftime with a 10-6 lead. UCLA head coach Deshaun Foster said he was proud of the response his team had in the second half.

“This game went very similar to how our season went. We had a few ups and downs, but my guys are very resilient. They’ve continued to play hard. They don’t let things affect them. I’m just blessed that I had the type of team that just continues to fight. We came out of the half and scored some points and got it going,” Foster said.

UCLA had a big game from senior tight end Moliki Matavao. He finished the game with a season-high in receptions and receiving yards. Matavao had eight catches for 120 yards in the win over Fresno State.

Photo by Jensen Fluellen / fi360 News

“Just the bonds that we have with this team. Especially this senior group, we’re all really close both on and off the field,” Matavao said. “It’s just awesome seeing us all success, especially after this last game. We started off slow, but we came out after halftime. It was fun to see everyone do their part, do their job, and come out with a victory.”

In a surprising turn of events for UCLA, it wasn’t running back TJ Harden taking the majority of the snaps for the Bruins. It was Anthony Frias II who took a majority of the carries. Frias II transferred over from Kansas State in 2023 and in his second year with the program. It was a game to remember for Frias II as he had a career high in carries and yards. He had 13 carries for 46 yards.

Foster said it was the next man up mentality that led to Frias II being ready for the moment.

Photo by Jensen Fluellen / fi360 News

“TJ [Harden] missed the last two days because he was sick. That was one guy that was out. Keegan [Jones] was already nursing an ankle. That was unfortunate. Next man mentality, we were down to our fourth left tackle, next man up. We were down to our third running back – next man up. It’s more about how he practices every day and prepares to play like he is starting. It was exciting that he finally got his shot. When his number was called he was able to capitalize and make some plays for us,” Foster added.

With the Bruins sitting at 5-7 record, they aren’t bowl eligible, but Foster said he’s excited to head into the offseason.

Photo by Jensen Fluellen / fi360 News

“We’d love to be in a bowl game, but it’s unfortunate that we came up a game short. Just building the team. They’ll be able to get some rest. I think it will help them. When they come back, they’ll be eager to get going,” Foster noted. “I’m looking forward to this offseason, building a roster with high school kids and a couple of portal players. I’m just excited that we were able to send my seniors off the right way with a victory.”

Mckinney stating that “he had no ill feelings towards his old team and that he envisioned the interception it the night”.

LMU Lions pull out win against Fullerton Titans in overtime

Photo by Eric Brown Jr. / fi360 News

LOS ANGELES – The LMU Lions women’s basketball team beat the Cal State Fullerton Titans1
64-61 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon at the Gersten Pavilion.

The Titans had a chance to win in regulation but missed a crucial free throw with 9 seconds left
while the score was tied 52-52, sending the game into overtime.

With 1:05 remaining in regulation, the Titans led 52-49 and seemed on track to secure their first
win of the season. However, LMU’s Brandi Williams launched a contested three-pointer with the
shot clock winding down, drew a foul, and made all three free throws to tie the game at 52-52.

On the very next inbounds play, Aixchel Hernandez of the Titans was fouled but missed both
free throws. LMU also failed to score on their possession, and the game moved into overtime.
In overtime, the Titans faced significant foul trouble. Not only did starting guard Aaliyah Stanton
foul out, and both Hernandez and Eva Levingston were playing with four fouls a piece.

Hernandez fouled out early in the extra period, leaving the Titans shorthanded. LMU took
advantage, scoring easy layups and outscoring the Titans 12-9 in overtime. Despite two big
three-pointers by Demonnie Lagway that kept Fullerton within a possession, the Lions ultimately
held on for the win.

After the Lions took a 63-61 lead with 13 seconds left, the Titans made a crucial turnover on
their inbound play, giving LMU possession. The Lions made 1-of-2 free throws to extend their
lead to 64-61 with 7 seconds remaining. With zero timeouts remaining, the Titans rushed down
the court but were unable to convert a three-pointer to force double overtime.

Demonnie Lagway led all scorers with a career-high 18 points and made 4 three-pointers. While
no other Titan reached double figures, all eight players scored at least one point. Freshman
Layla Davis made a solid debut, contributing 6 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.

The Titans outshot the Lions 35% to 34% but were outrebounded 46-38. Once again, free throw
shooting was a key factor in the game, as LMU made 20-of-27 free throws, while the Titans
struggled, shooting just 9-of-18 from the line.

LMU will look to continue their winning streak on Wednesday Dec. 4 against Life Pacific at 6PM
at home.

UCLA shocks South Carolina to claim the top spot in the rankings

Photo by Eric Brown Jr. / fi360 News

Westwood, CA – The longest winning streak in college basketball history has been broken, as
No. 6 UCLA defeated defending champion No. 1 South Carolina 77-62 in dominant fashion.
For the past two seasons, Dawn Staley’s team had been unstoppable, setting a program record
with 43 consecutive wins, only four of which were decided by single digits. However, on Sunday
afternoon at Pauley Pavilion, the Gamecocks didn’t resemble the most dominant team in the
game.

“This game is about our program and where we’re going,” said UCLA head coach Cori Close
during the postgame interview. “This means a lot, because Dawn Staley has set the tone of
what women’s basketball excellence should be over the last several years. And I just have so
much respect for her, for her staff, for the way they have a global view of the game. So this
obviously means a lot because of the respect we have. That being said, we expected to win.”

Photo by Eric Brown Jr. / fi360 News

The Bruins’ victory marks their first-ever win against a No. 1-ranked team and is South
Carolina’s first November loss since 2019. The 15-point defeat is also the Gamecocks’ largest
margin of loss since the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The final score was only that close because
South Carolina made a late push in the final minutes, when the outcome had already been
decided.

Before Sunday’s game, Staley acknowledged that UCLA center Lauren Betts would be a major
challenge. A likely first-round pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, Betts didn’t post huge scoring
numbers, finishing with just 11 points. However, she dominated the paint, grabbing a game-high
14 rebounds, blocking four shots, and making the Gamecocks work hard for every point they
scored near the basket.

Tessa Johnson gave the Gamecocks a boost off the bench, scoring 10 of their first 12 points as
they tried to rally early in the game. Her early boost off the bench wasn’t enough to She finished
the afternoon with 14 points.

“We did a good job on Betts, but got killed by everyone else,” Staley said.
Five Bruins scored in double figures, led by Londynn Jones with 15. Despite shooting just 24%
from three to start the season, Jones went 5-for-5 on Sunday. Elina Aarnisalo added 13, and
Kiki Rice and Gabriela Jaquez each chipped in 11.

UCLA drops Crosstown Rivalry In heartbreaking fashion

Photo by Jordon Kelly / fi360 News

Pasadena, CA- The UCLA football team was on the verge of holding onto the Victory Bell for the second straight year, but collapsed late as the USC Trojans came back to win the Crosstown Rivalry on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl.

UCLA led 13-9 late going into the fourth quarter after trailing 9-3 at the half. The Bruins ended up giving up a touchdown with 6:55 left in the game to give the Trojans the lead and eventually the win as USC escaped the Rose Bowl with a 16-13 win.

Photo by Jordon Kelly / fi360 News

UCLA head coach Deshaun Foster said that he was proud of the defensive effort, holding the Trojans to just one touchdown, but noted it takes a team effort to knock off a team like USC.

“Defensively, the defense came out and played a great game. We stopped them plenty of times. We held them to a lot of field goals. It’s a team sport,” Foster began with. “I just need our offense to be at their best when their best is needed. I like how hard my guys played. It just showed that they’re resilient. But we just didn’t do enough to win this game.”

Foster added the Bruins’ inability to manufacture points after holding USC to only field goals came back to haunt them as the Trojans scored their only touchdown late in the game.

Photo by Jordon Kelly / fi360 News

“(USC) Just finally made a play. They are scholarship athletes on that side of the ball, too. So they were eventually going to make a play. It was unfortunate. It ended as a six-point game, a one-score game. If we could have just found a way to manufacture a drive and just keep a rhythm and keep going, but we weren’t able to do that,” he said. “Like I said before, we’ve got one more week to get out there, and we are going to try to fix this.”

Despite the lack of points, the UCLA offense had moments where they looked the best all season.

Bruins quarterback Ethan Garbers completed 20 of 29 passes for 265 yards and one touchdown. Foster was extremely complimentary of his quarterback after the game.

Photo by Jordon Kelly / fi360 News

“Ethan’s a gamer. He is always going to be positive and continue to play hard. He doesn’t complain. He just comes back to the sideline. He always uplifts the players and keeps them going,” Foster added.

UCLA wide receiver J. Michael Sturdivant had his best game of the season in the loss. Sturdviant hauled in five receptions for 117 yards as he led all receivers in the game.

The Bruins conclude their season next week as they host Fresno State at the Rose Bowl at 12:30 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network.

No 3 USC undefeated run rerouted by No. 6 Notre Dame

Los Angeles, CA – With questions looming around how both USC and Notre Dame decreasing team roster would perform with early season injuries, there was no question that this weekend Los Angeles was the place to be for women’s college basketball. USC and Notre Dame started   it off with the Fighting Irish upsetting Trojans by a double digit margin, 74 to 61. Tomorrow No 4. UCLA and No. 1 South Carolina will finish the two day SoCal doubleheader, giving basketball fans a potential preview of women’s March Madness in November.

Coach Gottleib gathered herself from her team’s first loss to give gratitude to Notre Dame, in particular Coach Niele Ivey,  for playing this game early in their season. “ This game was easy to schedule than you think because of our relationship and shared vision for what is good for basketball,” Coach Gottlieb announced along with plans of playing next year at Notre Dame.

USC had a harder task to fill shoes of whom Coach Gottlieb described as this team’s best perimeter defender and starting freshman, Kennedy Smith.  Notre Dame did not make it easy with their dynamic duo of guards, Hannah Hidalgo and Olivia Miles ousting USC as the higher seeded team. Hidalgo led all scorers with 16 in the first half, opening the game with back to back buckets.

“I don’t want to take the game for granted, Hidalgo said. “I give all glory to God because God allows me to play basketball.”

Coach Ivey not shocked by Hidalgo’s huge 24 -point performance commended her on-the -court leadership and for guarding every position.  “She just so feisty, so energetic, it’s just contagious for our team,” Coach Ivey added.

USC expected either to get a “signature win” or “exposed” as Coach Gottlieb grappled with a stunned upset after going undefeated in their first four competitions. Sophomore sensation JuJu Watkins on the rise to scoring double digits could not lead her team as previous games despite another struggle shooting game. “It wasn’t the prettiest for me,” Watkins said, “but I’ll continue to lock in.”

Highly regarded graduate transfer KiKi Iriafen continued her streak of double-digit scoring alongside JuJu but both were outmatched by Notre Dame’s small roster and smaller players.

“This group is special,” Coach Ivey reflecting on her team’s “complete game” of both ends.

Known for her offense, Notre Dame’s Sonia Citron said, “this was just an early opportunity to show what we can do and I think we did that.”

Holding JuJu in first half to 5 points on 2 from 9 shooting while silencing USC home crowd most of the game plus every attempt for USC to comeback in the game.

Even while welcoming some of the biggest celebrities in the building that included regular supporters of JuJu—Michael B. Jordan and Snoop Dogg did not seem to phase or star struck Notre Dame from their first big matchup of the season. WNBA stars, former Women of Troy, and even talent scouts showed up to watch future WNBA prospects like JuJu and Hidalgo in an early head-to-head competition.

With a new NBC docuseries and celebrity fans, JuJu  considered as the cooler head did not prevail with her team winning.  Nor did she have much to say about Citron or Notre Dame defense against her.

“Hidalgo did what was expected and roaming everywhere,” Coach Gottlieb said. “But you feel like you’re doing a decent job on Miles and she goes crazy in second half.”

Miles and Hidalgo combined for 63 points outscoring USC’s  entire team.

After rallying up 24 points to match top scorer Hidalgo in an already decided game, Watkins said, “I just think this is a learning experience for the whole team. So much to learn, as far as chemistry and everything,”
