Los Angeles, Ca – It wasn’t pretty today on the field but the USC Trojans defeated Western Michigan University Broncos in a hard fought game 49 – 31 at the Coliseum.

The Broncos gave the Trojans almost all that they could handle in this home opener.

This 2017 season kicks off USC 125th season in school history. The school will use the hashtag #Team125 to celebrate this year happenings on social media.

USC mounted a comeback at end third quarter with 10 play 83 yard drive that looked to wear down the Broncos defense some. The drive was capped off with a 11 yard touchdown by USC Darnold on a keeper.

Both teams took turns matching each other on the scoreboard with some great football being played on the field.

USC defense came up with a big stop on 3rd & 19 from 30 yard line forcing them to settle for 43 yard field goal to trail by 35-31 4:31 left in the game.  The Trojans from this point on finished off the Broncos and kept they poise to get the victory.

“We celebrate all wins,” said USC coach Clay Helton “I’m thankful for #25 (Ronald Jones III) today.”

The Trojans leaned on the strength while trying to stick to balance game plan of passing and rushing the ball on offense. They began to find its rhythm once it found mismatches with the Broncos defenders.

Running back Ronald Jones out of the backfield was one of the mismatches that paid off gaining chunks of yards finishing the game with 18 carries for 159 yards 3 touchdowns. Jones scored the tying touchdown in second quarter with 4:21 on clock of 14-14 game.

The opening drive the Trojans gained 75 yards in 6 plays with a 16 yard touchdown run by Jones.

On the second series Sam Darnold was sacked and the Trojans were forced to punt. This gave Broncos good field position which they capitalized on tying the score 7-7 in 1st quarter of play.

After the Broncos settled down they began to control the tempo and the game. They took a second quarter lead on quarterback keeper seven yards score to lead 14-10 over 14 minutes in the half.

The Broncos did have one more highlight on special team which was 100 kickoff return by Darius Phillips in 4th quarter 28-28.

Now Helton knows his freshman running back Stephen Carr can come in and spell Jones and they will not lose a beat. Carr in his debut rushed 7 carries 69 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Trojans now will have some film on what areas need to be cleaned up to be ready for next week battle with Stanford at 5:30pm.

Narbonne can’t keep pace with Long Beach Poly in the end

Torrance, CA – Torrance, CA – The defenses stepped up all day for both teams but in the end the Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits came out on top with 147-10 victory over the Narbonne Gauchos Friday at Murdock Stadium.

This game was still up for grabs in the fourth quarter after four lead changes in the game. All of scoring came in second half of this defensive or bad offensive execution.

Poly took the their final lead on well designed legal pick play to Darius Kryger to cap off 60 yard drive and 14-10 lead with 5:35 left in the game.

In the second have Poly quarterback Matt Corral played better in second half finding his weapons to s core points.

“I had to get it together for the rest of my team and just have a short memory,” said Corral.

Jalen Hall was one of the weapons that made some great catches throughout the game. Hall scored the team’s first touchdown on fade route in third quarter to lead 7-3.

Narbonne coming off a great win last week received some great news of running back Jermar Jefferson being declared eligible with a hardship transfer.

Jefferson was Narbonne workhorse grinding up Poly defense every carry running hard for over 100 yards rushing.

Jalen Chatman started the game strong but the pressure from Poly front line seem to be too much. The last two weeks Chatman has not looked like his former self from last year being confident in the pocket.

In the end Poly was able to make one more play then Narbonne who last led the game 10-7 off a Jefferson touchdown 4th quarter 7:59 on the clock.

There was a lot of talent for both teams who will continue to get better as the season moves on.

Long Beach Poly will going into a bye week before facing Mission Viejo on Friday September 15. Narbonne will go on the road to Palos Verdes for day game Friday September 8, at 3pm.

Los Angeles, CA – It had a playoff atmosphere feel in the air at a sold out Staples Center who saw the LA Sparks shut down Minnesota Lynx 78-67.

“I know for the fans it was a great game for them to watch,” said Candace Parker

The Sparks will go as far as their team defense, they were able to control the game and keep Maya Moore of Lynx to only 10 points.

Parker hit here first shot of the game from downtown, so you knew she was looking for her shot. Parker was the game leading scorer with 24 points, and 10 rebounds.

“When Candace plays aggressive, she can score and facilitate,” said coach Brian Agler.

The Sparks now have the No. 2 seed if playoffs started today but still have a chance to knock off Lynx with some help and the win today.

This team really came out with a game plan of defense first, which is a signature of Agler coached teams. They finished the game with 17 fast break points off 11 team steals from the Sparks defense.

“The are a tough team,” said Parker, “We wanted to make shots hard for them.”

Watching the game and listening to the players in the locker room the word “Defense” was a resounding theme.

Guard Chelsea Gray has consistently stepped up like an All-Star that she is dropping 16 points and 5 assist, Odyssey Sims finished in double figures with 12 points.

Minnesota leading scorer was center Sylvia Fowles who kept getting deep position in the paint having a team high 17 points.

Moore who was guarded most of the night by Alana Beard was held to just 5 points in first three quarters of play. Beard night in night out takes on top scores and plays them upfront and in their face.

“When it come to defense, it’s all about team,” said Beard, “It’s our system.”

Down the stretch of this season the Sparks have really stepped it up and it showed tonight not taking off a quarter during the game.

Harbor City, CA – Having a heart of champion means to never give up no matter what the odds are. Narbonne did just that after trailing for all but last 4 minutes of this game defeating Serra 17-14.

Sound defense was the story line for both teams in tonight’s game each only giving up one touchdown each.

Narbonne defense gave them the break they need to start their rally on a interception by conner Demontii Peoples who ran 33 yards past Serra sidelines for a touchdown. They were trailing by two scores up to that point in the game.

The third phase of the game was a huge impact to the game, ending with a missed 27 yard game tying field goal by Serra.

Max Williams set the game on fire with the first score of the game in the second quarter on an electric 70 yards punt return. He is a dangerous playmaker who finds a way to make plays on special teams and as a shutdown corner.

Narbonne veteran coach Manny Douglas settled for points on the board electing to kick 24 yard field goal by Edgar Ramos to make it 14-10 game in the fourth. Douglas showed confidence in his defense making the right call in a tight game.

Serra game changer on offense was 6’2 senior receiver Kobe Smith who took a jump ball 98 yards and first half 14-0 lead.

Narbonne relied on the running game in second half to grind the clock and wear down Serra defense. Running back Keyshawn Dupree was called upon to fight for each yard behind his line that pushed him to 136 yards rushing in the game.

The ball switched hands a bunch after Narbonne took its first lead of the game on a 1 yard quarterback sneak that was the game last touchdown by Jalen Chatman at 3:46 left in.

The Narbonne defense finished the game bending but not breaking after giving up 50 yard pass to 4 yard line with less :30 left. Four plays later the stadium watched a wide right miss by Serra and the Narbonne comeback victory was complete.

Agoura Hills, CA – The Southern California High School Football Season has kicked off with a long drawn out 35-12 victory for Calabasas over Dorsey at Agoura High School on Thursday night.

As always the talent on field always finds a way to rise to the top. Calabasas has a nice trio of weapons for sophomore quarterback Jaden Casey to distribute the football too.

Even with over 200 yards in penalties between both teams you could see the stars. The refs continued to allow the game to have no rhythm while everybody knocked off the rust.

Casey opened the game with 39 yard touchdown to 6’4 receiver Johnny Wilson, who had seven catches for 126 yards Mossing defenders.

On the other side receiver Mycah Pittman took screen passes for big yards with nine catches for 135 yards.

“The DB’s were playing off the ball, so we hit em with some quick screens,” said Pittman “Our team came out tonight and made a statement.”

Dorsey was able to keep game close in first quarter scoring on 98-yard punt return by Dion Bascom right in front of Calabasas bench. This special teams touchdown showed that Dorsey has some explosive players, who can really go.

Once the dust settled Calabasas had scored 21 unanswered points to finish off the half leading 28-6.

In the fourth quarter Dorsey showed some life when sophomore reserve running back JoJuan Collins took a handoff 86 yards in a foot race for their last touchdown of the game.

Dorsey head coach Charles Mincy Sr will also remind his team how they stalled the Coyote offensive in second half coming up two fourth down stops to get the ball back.

Dorsey will host Serra next week Friday September 8, Calabasa will play next Friday September 1, at Salesian at 7pm.

Sparks Defense get the victory

Los Angeles, CA- The Los Angeles Sparks defense locked down the San Antonio Stars in the fourth quarter with 75-55 victory at Staples Center.

The defense held the Stars to 7 points for the whole team in fourth quarter after a stale third quarter.

The tone was set midway through the first quarter by the Sparks and Chelsea Gray who had the green light to shoot and score. She led her team with 17 points in first half.

Gray was in starting line with a three guard set of Alana Beard, and Odyssey Sims 8 points. They played well on both ends of the court for the Sparks, when the Stars controlled Nneka Ogwumike in first half.

“We were playing  inside out tonight through Candace and Nneka,” said Gray, “I just knocked them down.(baskets)”

The Sparks knew going into tonight’s game that Stars would give them a run if they didn’t execute for four quarters. So three out of four was enough to stretch their first place in WNBA lead to 1.5 games.

Ogwumike lead the Sparks with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assist in the game.

“I found a rhythm in the second half,” said Ogwumike

Now the Sparks have four more games in the regular season to keep pace and ensure that they are one of top two seeds for first round bye. The two teams that earn the bye will get four extra days to rest before starting their playoff run.

“One game, one day at a time,” said Ogwumike on how they approach these games.

Coach Brian Agler has this team playing well down the stretch.

“All wins are good this time of the year.” said Agler “Really impressed with how we played defense tonight.”

The Sparks travel to Phoenix on Thursday night for their last away game for the season.

Chargers coach Lynn happy that players stepped up

Carson, Ca- Offensive struggles continued for the Los Angeles Chargers as they finished with 177 total yards in a 13-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints in front of 21,504 at the StubHub Center on Sunday.

With both Drew Brees and Philip Rivers dressed but not playing, the backups got the start. The Chargers failed to score on offense and allowed eight sacks.

“The sacks is killed us (but) it’s not just the offensive line,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. “It’s running backs, tight ends, it’s the whole group. We have to do a better job of coaching these guys and getting them ready to play.”

Defensively, the Chargers played well besides the first offensive play for the Saints. Rookie running back Alvin Kamara scored on a 50-yard touchdown run to give the Saints a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Chargers defensive end Chris McCain got to the quarterback for the second straight game. McCain had half a sack with three quarterback hurries against the Seahawks last week and added a sack for a loss of 10 yards against the Saints.

The Chargers only touchdown came on defense as safety Dexter McCoil intercepted Ryan Nassib and returned it 99-yards for the score. The last pick-six in preseason play for the Chargers came last season when Brandon Flowers took a Carson Palmer pass 25 yards for the touchdown on Aug. 19, 2016.

“Our goal in practice everyday is to get the ball and score,” McCoil said. “I was just trying to find the end zone.”

After recording his first interception in the preseason opener, rookie Desmond King recorded his first sack and added a pass defensed against the Saints. King has five total tackles with an interception, a forced fumble and now a sack in his first two games with the Chargers.

“The defense led the league in interceptions last year with 18 so that’s a fact right there that shows our secondary is (full of) ballhawks,” King said. “We learn from each other. We feed off each other.”

Lynn believes the Chargers are going to play very well once the season begins. He said when they put that starting 22 out there, this team is going to be pretty good.

“After that performance tonight you might not think so, Lynn said. “But I’m just telling you, I see this team everyday.”

Los Angeles, CA – The new school year began last week, and that means football season ready to begin. The Los Angeles City Section CIF will have a few Zero weeks games this week to kick things off for  the 2017 season.

All across the southland teams have already been practicing for last month. Their goal of winning a CIF LA City Section Title is still the goal for teams. The elite 8 teams will now compete for the first time in a Open Division. Then next 16 teams that are placed in Division I will battle it out.

The new change was voted in by the City coaches to ensure a smooth road to the State playoffs entries. There are only three spots granted to CIFLACS to send Open Division winner, either Open runner-up/Division I winner and last spot to Division II/ Division III winner.

They regular season games will get more intense knowing that the fight to be elite 8. They will be some primetime games without first round blowouts from lower seeds just having a extra week of practice.

If the change was implemented last season here is what the brackets could have looked like:

This format would have left Crenshaw out who actually upset the higher seed to advance to second round. The middle seeds matched up also in second round verse the first round. The better games should allow teams to elevate they game to gear up for long run.

The Los Angeles Chargers put in work instead of hands this week

Costa Mesa, CA – The Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints held a joint practice on Thursday and Friday, ahead of their matchup on Sunday at the StubHub Center.

Fans from both teams filled the stands as the Chargers and Saints went through individual drills, competed in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11.

While the competition level was high, Chargers’ coach Anthony Lynn was pleased to make through practice without any fights.

“A good, clean practice. A lot of good teaching tape,” Lynn said. “Exactly what I expected from a Sean Payton team. A lot of good character guys and hard workers.”

Offensively, the Chargers’ wide receivers were the highlight of Thursday’s practice. Undrafted rookie Artavis Scott beat defenders on multiple occasions, including a back-shoulder catch in the end zone for a touchdown.

Keenan Allen had a solid day of practice. Allen made a sensational one-handed catch during 7-on-7 and had numerous touchdown catches during team drills.

“I’m getting my groove back,” Allen said. “I’m feeling comfortable right now. The game and the speed is coming back to me.”

Saints running back Adrian Peterson was spotted chatting with Melvin Gordon after practice. Peterson had nothing but praise for Gordon and his work ethic.

“Obviously, he has nice size and is very explosive, (but) I didn’t realize how fast he was,” Peterson said. “Once we got on the track, I was able to see how fast he was. He has some real good speed.

Chargers running back Austin Ekeler had the highlight of the day during Friday’s practice. Ekeler scored on a catch-and-run in the red zone, reaching for the pylon before he is hit out of bounds.

Linebacker Denzel Perryman returned to practice on crutches and watched from the sidelines after undergoing surgery on Tuesday.

Chargers struggle down the stretch

Carson, Ca – In its first preseason game of the season, the Los Angeles Chargers scored on the opening drive with the first team offense but the backups struggled the rest of the way in a 48-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at the StubHub Center on Sunday night.

Philip Rivers looked like his old self on the first drive, completing 5-of-6 attempts for 56 yards and a touchdown. Rivers hit Antonio Gates for a 5-yard touchdown.

Once the starters left the field, so did the Chargers lead. Seattle forced three turnovers and scored 17 unanswered points in the first half.

“I thought we started the game well,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. “I definitely didn’t like the way the twos in. We turned the ball over three times. We stopped playing Charger football.”

Second string quarterback Kellen Clemens threw a pick six on his second possession of the game. Clemens’ pass bounced off running back Brandon Oliver’s hands and into the grasp of linebacker Terence Garvin who returned it 37 yards for the score. \

Clemens redeemed himself with a 74-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin with just under a minute left in the first quarter.

“I thought the first-team offense did a good job,” Benjamin, who finished with two receptions for 89 yards, said. “Going out there as a unit to score a touchdown, that’s what we think we can do each time.”

Seattle’s backups dominated the rest of the way, outscoring the Chargers 45-10. Rookie defensive back Desmond King recorded an interception in his first professional game.

Gates said he thinks the reason for the preseason is to be able to go back to the drawing board and see what you can do better.

“Considering the way we started, obviously, no matter what circumstances, you want to win the football game,” Gates said. “Next week, I guarantee we’re going to put a better foot forward.”
