Berkley, CA- Miami escape Berkey with a 1-point victory to advance to 6-0, 39-38 Hurricanes victory. Newly added Cal Berkey Bears to the ACC has shown that they can compete.
Miami quarterback Cameron Ward was a force for the Cal defense throwing for 437 total yards on 35-53 pass along with 2 touchdown and an interception.
With 1:42 left on the game clock Miami was trailing 32-38 starting a drive deep on their own 8-yard line with all three timeouts remaining, After Cal gave up a big play that allowed Miami to be across midfield the defense was stiffing up. Then on 2nd & goal :32 seconds on clock from Ward on play action found his tightend Elijah Arroyo who was sent in motion then slipped out and caught the touchdown to tie game 38-38. The extra point was kicked in by Andres Borregales for the lead 39-38.

“No quit mentality,” said Mario Cristobal Miami coach, “The leadership on the team during timeouts was great.”
Cal was left with just :26 second on the clock but just wasn’t enough time. Maimi took a Mendoza pass for an interception on 4th down to end the game.
Fernando Mendoza threw for 2 touchdown and an interception for 285 yards on the day. He was the offense for Cal but that was enough to upset No 8 ranked Hurricanes. A bright spot for Cal was Jack Endries who caught 3 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. With five running backs they were held for 75 yards but did reach the endzone twice.

“Everybody could done better,” said Mendoza, “There’s a great fork in the road, and every team we have on our schedule we can win.”
It was exciting day in Berkely with ESPN Gameday being on campus, having a student kick a field goal for $100,000. All they needed was a Cal victory but the Canes were to stingy. The Canes held the ball 15 more minutes then the Bears.

The halftime Cal lead of 21-10 wasn’t enough to keep Maimi at bay.
With this victory Miami will get a much need bye week to rest and prepare to travel to Louisville (3-2). Cal Bears will travel to Pittsburgh (5-0) next week for ESPN 12:30 pst game.
