LOGAN, Utah — Utah State’s defense delivered a dominant performance Saturday, forcing two fumbles and limiting Colorado State to season lows in total offense and rushing yards in a 31-14 Halloween victory at Maverik Stadium.
The Aggies improved to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in Pac-12 play behind a defensive effort that held the Rams to 263 total yards, including just 77 rushing yards. Utah State also converted both Colorado State turnovers into touchdowns while producing 464 yards of offense without committing a turnover.
“Wins have been tough so far for the team, and they’re united, and they’re resilient and the culture is really strong,” Utah State coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “It’s always fun to see people work really hard and then have a reward for that work.”
The Aggies established control early, opening with a six-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped by Nehemiah Washington’s 31-yard touchdown run at 12:26 of the first quarter. It was the redshirt freshman’s first career touchdown.
Kian Afrookhteh added a 25-yard field goal late in the opening quarter before quarterback McCae Hillstead extended the lead to 17-0 in the second. Hillstead escaped pressure and ran 18 yards for his first career rushing touchdown.
Colorado State struggled to find offensive rhythm before halftime, managing just 67 total yards and minus-5 rushing yards. Utah State controlled possession for more than 20 minutes in the opening half.
The defensive pressure continued after the break. On fourth down, David Kabongo strip-sacked Rams quarterback Hauss Hejny, and Carson Tujague recovered the fumble at the Utah State 30-yard line.
The Aggies converted the takeaway into another touchdown, with Javen Jacobs scoring on a 12-yard run to make it 24-0 with 5:34 remaining in the third quarter.
Colorado State responded with a six-yard touchdown run by Durell Robinson, but Utah State delivered another critical takeaway in the fourth quarter. Tevita Tuha forced a fumble on a handoff, and James Jennette recovered for the Aggies.
Hillstead then guided a 10-play, 71-yard drive, connecting with Kaina Watson for a seven-yard touchdown pass with 4:53 remaining. Watson scored for the second consecutive week, extending Utah State’s lead to 31-6.
The Rams added a late touchdown when Hejny connected with Cedric Ross for a 21-yard score, but the unsuccessful onside kick ended their comeback hopes.
Tujague, who recorded a sack and two tackles for loss, said stopping the run was a priority for the defense.
“You can never win a game unless you stop the run, and that’s been our focus the past couple of weeks,” Tujague said.
Hillstead completed 17 of 22 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown while adding 79 rushing yards and another score. He also caught a 44-yard pass from Anthony Garcia, the first reception of his career.
Garcia led Utah State with a career-high 11 receptions for 121 yards. Jacobs finished with 56 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Washington contributed 32 yards and a score.
Utah State finished with eight tackles for loss and controlled possession for 36 minutes, 8 seconds, using a balanced offense and timely defensive stops to secure the victory. The Aggies return home Nov. 7 to face Fresno State.
