Gardena, Ca – It was time to hold off a very hungry Alemany coming off 3 tough losses for the first time in coach Dean Herrington career. Serra did just that with a dominating 41-34 victory to capture the Mission League title outright for back to back years. The star of the night Khalil Tate who accounted for 500 of Serra 594 total offense yards.
Tonight’s victory was Serra head coach Scott Altenberg 161 career win. This week Altenberg message was clear “Character”, wanting his team not to lose focus and be smart. It looks like the team responded and let its words be spoken by their play.
This was a game of two different half’s, which started out as 27-27 shoot out to began the game. Alemany Sophomore quarterback Brevin White had an efficient first half completing 10/14 passes. While Serra explode on the scoreboard first with 33 yards TD, followed by quick strike Alemany responds with 51 yards catch by Jarrin Pierce. With score tied already 7-7 and there was still 10:17 on clock in first half. Alemany kicks off to Serra and steals the onside kick and goes on short field for a score. On the next play White connects with Johnny Edwards and 14-7 lead still in first quarter and 9:20 left.
The Cavaliers showed poise all night not getting to low or high with the game swinging back and forth. There was plenty of fireworks and hard hits, great grabs, and speed on speed. One Tate big targets was Kobe Smith who had 3 catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns, one being an exciting 4th & 13 touchdown grabs that seem to set the tone of the game.
After the teams emerged from the locker room both teams defense stepped up in second half. Serra man child defensive end Oluwole Betiku who finished with 5 sacks for the game. They started to move him around more to avoid the double teams that he was facing in first half. Quarterback Tate was slowed down as much as speed bump on a side street still managed to find few more creases in the Alemany defense. The Cavaliers were all smiles knowing they had taking Alemany best shot and came away victorious.
Serra now moves its record to 8-1 on the season and will finish the season on the road traveling next week to Chaminade before CIFSS playoffs seedlings meeting. Then Alemany moves to 6-3 and will host Norte Dame with an outside chance to gain an at-large bid for the playoffs if they can win.
