Los Angeles, Ca – The last game of CIF City Section regular season has an action pack finish in the rough Coliseum. The division II stars Hawkins faced Los Angeles in matinee game at 2:15pm, with the title on the line. The night cap between division I cross-town rivals’ Dorsey vs Crenshaw at 7pm. It was great on scheduling because you could catch both games and see the wild finish with so much on line from a title to playoff seedings.
The LA High Romans playing at home for this last regular season and quest for keep its record unblemished. That dream was shattered once the sun ducked behind the home stands and game was called with 3:15 left on the clock due to Sun Down rule resulting in 31-31 tie. Hawkins was all smiles and celebrating their accomplishment due to coming back from being down 31-15 at one point in game. The Romans were left with a sour taste in their mouth that will only last for a day because with the tie the still won the Coliseum league title. So selection Saturday for playoff seeds will still have them as top 3 seed.
Both teams showed why they were moved into the Coliseum, and have formed quick rivals in short time. Both coaches have respect for each other program and spoke after the game, “Resiliency,” Hawkins Coach Mil’Von James said of his players. “My hat goes off to them,” Los Angeles Coach Eric Scott said. “They fought from behind and never gave up.”
These two teams will continue to compete in the future, LA High will go forward into playoffs next week. Hawkins will enjoy their Championship 4th quarter comeback and be ready for next year skipping this season post season due to 1 year ban from an ineligible player last year.
The Dorsey Dons finished the regular season with a big win defeating crosstown rivals Crenshaw 34-35 in the night cap. Speaking with defensive back coach Ivan Stephenson the day before the game he said, “I feel good about this game we had a great week of practice as a team.” His defensive backs showed up and backed up his feelings 3 of 4 getting interceptions in the game.(Tyquan Perry, Marquette Jackson, Antwone Williams)
Dorsey relied on Senior running back Devin Mangrum and freshman Charles Mincy combined for over 400 yards rushing. The pounding with great blocking from the offensive line was a difference make combined with the pressure from defensive line to help the DB’s.
This was the first win for Dorsey against is rival since 2011, to have bragging rights at least for a year. Crenshaw had a chance to comeback but just too little too late. Their quarterback the young Daiyan Henly was looking down field for his targets but when he saw daylight he used his feet to break contain. Henly feet didn’t fail him rushing for bunch of first downs and touchdown during the comeback.
Both teams will have post season play this year that will be figured out Saturday, with the win Dorsey should be rewarded with being on the opposite side of Narbonne in playoff bracket till the championship if they can survive.
