Harbor City, Ca- After lots of debate and local TV media attention the Narbonne Girls Basketball team was reinstated. Just few days earlier the CIF city section ruled that the team was disqualified from the Championship game that being played today. All this commotion because they wore jerseys with pink numbers that is not part of their uniform colors.
The Gauchos beat View Park 57-52 for the right to face Palisades High School, but they will have to do it without their head coach Victoria Sanders. The decision to allow them to play today came with penalties, Sanders is banned for the game, state playoffs and can’t host playoff games in 2015-16 season.
So what do you do when you face adversity? We shall see how the Lady Gauchos respond by their play on the court. Meanwhile Palisades has been preparing for either team that stands in their way to the crown. Over the years CIF has disqualified other teams for uniform infractions based on rule Article 1305 in the L.A. City Section’s Goldbook. Penalties can include probation or forfeiture of contest.
Commissioner John Aguirre enforced the initial ruling based on info provided by an assistance section commissioner in attendance at View Park game. Even with this being the second time the girls worn their Pink Breast Care awareness Jerseys, it was reported as violation. The appeal committee looked at the spirit of the rule and the violation, and came to solution to penalize the school in a manner that allowed their play to decide when their season would be finished.
Girls Open Division Championships will be played at Cal State Dominguez Hills College gym at 6pm March 7th, 2015. Both teams will advance to the California State Playoffs.
